Cox Smashes LGR
Mark!
By Mike Babicz |
(Lake Geneva, Wis., Saturday, July 1,
2006)- “The fastest
man in the history of Lake Geneva Raceway” is now a crown owned by
winged asphalt sprint car driver Tim Cox of Park City, Ill.
Cox wheeled his 410-cubic inch
600-plus horse powered winged asphalt sprint car to a :14.396
seconds clocking for his third lap in his successful bid to break
the former all time track record. The old mark of :14.953 was held
by Russ Scheffler of Milwaukee set October 4, 1997 during an open
competition show with a dirt track late model stock car.
“The car popped out of gear on
the first lap and the engine almost died,” explained Cox, whose
opening lap of the three-lap run was :15.685. “I had to hold it in
gear with one hand on the hand clutch and the other on the steering
wheel. The car was a little loose, but I’m glad we were able to get
the record for the fans. It was a blast.”
Cox was able to gain momentum
on the second lap, running :14.463 seconds before the standing room
only overflow crowd. “I can’t wait until we come back August 3 and
have 20 of these winged warriors all on the track at the same time.
It’s going to be awesome.”
With Cox record setting Quest
for the Ultimate Lap, he is the frontrunner for the $600 bounty that
was placed on the all time record. The bounty will be paid out on
October 1, part of Lake Geneva Raceway’s final October Classic
weekend.
Cox’s mark may be in jeopardy
on Thursday, August 3 as the Ultimate Racing Spectacular features
the HOSS asphalt outlaw sprint car winged warriors invading Lake
Geneva along with the stars and cars of the Midwestern traveling Big
8 Late Model Stock Car Series and the LGR weapons division stock
cars.
“I really think we can run a
13 second lap if everything is right,” Cox said. “We’re going to
have to have everything together on August 3. We’re looking forward
to it.”
Lake Geneva Raceway is in its’
Checkered Flag Season as the one-third mile semi-banked asphalt oval
is part of an overall facility that includes a off road course,
competitive go kart track, public go kart track, stadium motocross
course and a restaurant/bar. The entire complex has been sold to a
developer and will become a housing development after the season
ends in the fall that will bring a final checkered flag down on the
facility after 44 years of continuous operation.
Weekly Friday racing is held
at Lake Geneva through Labor Day weekend, with the exception of
August 4 that is being held open for a rain date for the
Spectacular. Saturday racing is held weekly through October 14.
