Wild Night at LGR!
By Dale R. Erdmann

May 6, 2006;  Lake Geneva, WI. - It was only a new moon in the sky, so that theory of full moon didn’t apply. But after the plus three and one half hours that the crowd sat through the race program proved one thing. Sometimes things can go wrong.
The Budweiser super late model feature was cut to 32 laps out of 40 scheduled, the crowd was happy. Eddie May of Crystal Lake,Illinois won his first feature of the season. In the Basic International division, the feature never completed a lap, when the show was marred by a multi car pile up, sending second year driver Tad DeRouse of Antioch,IL. to Elkhorn Hospital with unknown problems. His condition at the time of this release was not known.

The McHenry Limousine super stocks feature usually run without a hitch, well not tonight with numerous Yellow Book USA caution periods. But not take the glory away from the winner, John Maki Jr. of Antioch,IL. in the full 25 lap feature event. The Performance unlimited sportsman feature went off without any problems and was a great race, with hometown driver
James Swan winning the 25 lap feature.

Tom Jastrab (#65) found himself facing traffic during the Super Stock feature. Joe DeCubellis (#36) and Randy Schneider (#23) use the high line to avoid him.

The super late model feature just couldn’t get going with numerous caution periods during the twenty fives minutes it took to run the first twenty laps
with Kenny Joosten out front. Earl Counter was second, with Mike Gundersonand Rick Corso putting a show on for third. The most serious mishap came on  lap twenty one, when Mike Simon flew into the wall and then across the track with the momentum of the force. Simon escaped injury but his night was over
with extensive damage to his race car. Gunderson slipped into second, with Eddie May right on his back side on lap twenty two. May crept up on Joosten  made his way by on lap twenty seven, Gunderson and Jason Hicks were just about to move in on the new leader when the next slowdown ensued. On the restart May, Gunderson and now Corso were in a three deep race for the top spot. On the lap thirty first lap another caution was displayed and starter Dave Rex waited for the new line up and gave the checkered to stop the mayhem. May won the event just in front of rookie Gunderson, in his best showing of
the young season. Corso nipped Jamie Wallace who finally found a hole to move through. Landry Potter was fifth and Hicks sixth.

Nathan Matz led the first three laps of the super stock feature, before ShaneSapp moved in front. Bob Moeller was third at that time. It took forever to run laps nine and ten, which gave John Maki Jr. the breaks he needed, picking the correct lane when the cone came out. Maki smoothly came along Sapp and inched ahead with eleven laps to go. It was finally all out racing for the next ten laps, as Maki won his first feature of the season. Sapp held onto second with Jack Rubach, Scotty Norton, fast timer Tom Roney and Adam Regnier completing the top six.

The sportsman feature brought Mike Smart out front for one lap, before Bob Giers made contact with the leader, causing a spin. Gary Norton was the new leader, but one lap later Sonny Schoffen moved in front. until lap until there were five laps to go. James Swan the 2004 Slinger champion was steadily moving through the field after starting near the back of the field. Then on lap twenty one there was a new leader, then going home to win his first feature of the season..

The twenty car BIC feature wasn’t even a half lap old when some six deep racing turned ugly and many race cars flew in different directions and when the dust cleared, Evan Townsend and Tom Homan had two of the demolished race cars. Plus a fellow driver received injuries that sent him to the hospital. Because of the time, the event was cancelled, due to the curfew and
the injury.

Next Saturday night the weapons join the super late models, super stocks and sportsman with a Lynch GMC super store of Burlington special for the area sportsman. It will pay $1000 for the winner of the feature race and $100 to start the event. A full field of race cars are expected as the Slinger speedway Midwest sportsman cars can race here too and it’s an open night for the Mid American series drivers. Time trials are at 5:45 pm. with races at 7 sharp.
