Bickle Returns Home for the Big Win, Doherty Wins BIC Title!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
October 1, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI. - It was a perfect
day with temperatures in the low 70’s as Victor Ford, Dunn Lumber
and Bud Light presented the final fall classic at Lake Geneva
Raceway, in day number two Sunday. Richie Bickle Jr. from Sun
Prairie, now a nationally recognized driver in NASCAR, came home one
last time to win the final feature of a great afternoon with over
275 race cars on hand. Bickle who raced here in the late 70’s,80’s
and early 90’s won the 75 lap feature race.15 year old Michael
Bilderback of South Beloit, IL. a two time bandolero champion here
and runner up in the points standings for the legends cars, won his
first major race in the 58 lap feature for the BIG 8 series that
runs regionally.
Rockford driver Steve Doherty won his first
championship in the Basic International cars, part of the fall show,
with visiting drivers in a pure stock class. Tim Bell of
Johnsburg,IL. won the area modifieds feature, with fast qualifier
Wes Biswell second. The street stock feature went to 2006 LGR
champion, Adam Regnier of Twin Lakes. The new BOSS outlaw
sprints debuted with Tim Cox of Park City,IL.winning the 20 lap
contest. Cox also won the ultimate one lap qualifying record, going
home with $1750 for his efforts.

sprints debuted with Tim Cox of Park City, IL. winning the 20 lap
contest. Cox also won the ultimate one lap qualifying record, going
home with $1750 for his efforts.
The Saturday night Wisconsin sport truck feature went to fast timer
Kyle Quala, who started nearly an eighth lap down, due to an
incident on lap one, as the only driver to take fast time three
years in a row flew onto the infield to avoid the melee. But with
three laps to go, Quala who won the race, caught Brandon Kucksdorf
who finished second. Sunday wasn’t that good for Quala who worked
his way up to third, before going backwards to eighth with problems.
The race was won by Dan Vixmer with just a few laps to go, taking
the lead from 16 year old Sam Haven who claimed second.
The pure stock feature, which was also the BIC championship, with
visitors invited to participate. Robert Palka slipped in front of
the field with Pete Koenig second until Matt Booker moved by on lap
three. Then out of no where Steve Doherty was second by lap five and
the leader on lap eight. The new champion never looked back, despite
first Leo Bujak started to close in, before breaking a wheel for the
only Yellow Book USA caution period. With a green, white checkered
Evan Townsend was right on Doherty’s backside, but settled for
second. Matt Booker was third, Tom Homan fourth,
Jefferson Speedway champ Kyle Waters fifth and Roger Schultz sixth.
The pure stock 8 cylinder feature brought regular LGR driver Mark
Tomasi in front from his outside pole starting spot. Visiting Tom
Flippo Jr. was right with the leader, until Corey Teran who moved
into second on lap three and then the lead one lap later. the leader
bobbled two laps later and James Tate Jr.moved in front. Quickly
Greg Pruitt pulled off a slick move and the leader could feel the
pressure. Suddenly fast timer Jimmy Robinson was up along side
Pruitt, as thing got real tight first through sixth. Robinson worked
hard to get around Pruitt with now Kyle Stark right there too. Tate
was comfortably ahead with five laps to go. But things would change
as the top six diced for the best position. With five laps to go, it
would be a great finish to this non stop event. Coming into turn one
Tate got alittle out of his groove, which gave Robinson enough room
to slip inside, but contact was made. Tate tried to correct, with
Robinson and Brian Piller going by. The last five laps were still
close, as Piller tried to chase the leader. Robinson was first
across the line with Piller, Tate, Stark, Pruitt and Charlie
Frisch.
The Burlington Glass street stocks had a strong field, as four from
the semi came over to the feature. Rookie Nick Shelton darted out
front with another rookie Cody Potter next. Ken Eisbrenner took over
first on lap three, with Shane Sapp quickly
moving into second, as Bob Moeller took over third and by lap five
Adam Regnier was fourth. The first Yellow Book USA caution period
came on lap fourteen. That was all Regnier needed moving into the
lead at the drop of the next green. The race now was for second, as
Eisbrenner now had Scott Norton right behind him .Tom Roney slipped
into fourth on lap twenty. Regnier, the 2006 champion here easily won
the contest, with Norton grabbing nipping Roney for second, Moeller
came back for fourth, with Eisbrenner and Sapp in a near dead heat
for fifth.
In super street stock feature action,Dean Baumbach inched ahead of
Bryan Turtle ,Scott Lawyer and Louie Bachette .Despite a smaller car
count, the race was close, Dean Patterson moved in front on lap two,
with Brad Norgrad, Scott Reidner and Fred Nason, fresh from his win
at Rockford was now next. Things changed real quick, as Reidner was
now in front one lap later. Turtle followed the new leader, as this
race was far from over. Nason starting his challenge of Turtle by
lap seven. By lap twenty Nason finally moved in front of Turtle, who
came right back to second. They diced for that spot the next three
laps, before Nason secured second on lap twenty four, then moved
inside the leader. Contact was made, just as Nason got to the
front door of the Reidner wagon. The momentum was gone and Nason
fell back to fourth. It was all over as Reidner sailed to a small
victory over Turtle, a recovering Nason, Lawyer ,Baumbach and John
Janssen.
The area modifieds both dirt and paved track cars together, all with
dirt tires on their mounts. Al Keppert led the first two laps before
Tim Bell moved from his fifth row starting position and into the
led. Creating some more excitement Bill Tandetzke spun in front of
most of the field, while being lapped. Everyone missed him and the
race continued, with Bell way out front. Fast timer Wes Biswell
moved up to second on lap eight, with Joey Bentfield next. Dale
Punity gained third from Bentfield on lap ten.Bell went on to win
the event, just ahead of Biswell, Punity, Jay Crichton, Joe Osterman
and Bentfield. 60 % of the field came in on Sunday and did not time
because they were at Chilton on Saturday for their big show. That
made for an even better race and the biggest field in seven years.
14 year old Jason Cox, who races Burris Circle track karts, now in
his first sprint car race led the first three laps of the 25 lap
feature, before his father Tim Cox took over for one lap, then Brian
Kristan moved in front one lap later, as things
got tight all over the field. James Lukey and Michael Cource diced
for the next position. Ryan Irwin, Frank Moser and Robby Wirth were
right behind the top five, as it was too close to call with ten to
go and Tim Cox had taken over the front spot. That would be the way
it would end, as Cox kept his win streak at 100 %. Kristan was
second, with Jason Cox next and Lukey, Irwin and Moser under a
blanket.
The super late model feature was last, giving fans the treat they
were waiting for. Richie Bickle Jr.was lucky enough to have the
pole, after the fast qualifier Pat Kelly tossed the dice for a
three. With the double greens thrown high into the air, Bickle
and Mike Meyerhofer stayed side by side for ten laps, before there
was alittle space at his side. By then Eddie Hoffman was up to
third, after starting fourth row inside. It took Hoffman four more
laps to get by Meyerhofer,c oming within inches of the
leaders rear bumper. On lap twenty three, Brandon Hill who started
three row inside was knocking on Hoffman’s door, getting past four
laps later. Second through ninth was very close, as the leader had a
eight car advantage. The field timed within .178 from sixteenth to
first, so it was hard to advance with that kind of field. Brian
Johnson Jr. and Jeremie Lepak who timed second, got together on lap
thirty for the first caution, just before Hill got by Hoffman.
With the green back out, Bickle ran away from the
field, with Hill and Hoffman in a dead heat for second. Hoffman went
back to second on lap thirty two and thirty three, before Hill
charged back into second. Steve Carlson moved into fourth on lap
thirty seven. Hoffman moved back into second on lap forty, as second
through seventh remained very close.Nothing really changed as lapped
cars got in the way before the checkered, as Hoffman mount his
assault, but then got caught in traffic.
Bickle went on to win the last super late model
feature ever, with Hoffman trying second. Hill a hometown driver,
impressed the crowd with his third place finish. Carlson maintained
his fourth place, with Pat Kelly fifth. Jamie Irverson impressed
everyone after starting 9th. row advancing the second most to take
sixth,a s did LGR champ Eddie who started dead last from a last
chance race, like Irverson and Jason Hicks who took eighth.
Earlier in the afternoon, before the racing began, Michael Babicz,
the Saturday Night track announcer and his long time friend Cathy
Langren, were married, before the sprints qualified.
This coming Saturday night the Midwest enduro series returns for
Their final appearance ever. The original Goblin 250 will take
place, A small car enduro,a costume contest for the children and
roll over contest. The show begins at 6:00 pm. The raceway remains
open for weekly shows until October 21st. when the final trailer
races takes place.
