September 23, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI. - It
may have rained until 6:30 pm. but it was championship race time at
Lake Geneva Raceway, Saturday night and the show went on. Eddie May
of Crystal Lake, Illinois not only won the 50 lap
super late model championship race. May won his second crown of his
career, as the second generation driver won his tenth
feature race of the final season. Sam Redman, also of Crystal
Lake,IL. won his first career 40 lap feature, in the McHenry
Limousine super stocks. The rookie driver led all but 7 laps of the
event. Adam Regnier of Twin Lakes won the final super stock
championship ,the first in his career.
In the Perfection Auto Body, INEX legends race cars
Michael Bilderback of South Beloit,IL. won the 15 lap feature
race, his sixth win of the last season here. All of the legends
drivers donated their wins to Curt and Michelle Gnatzig, for their
new baby Boy Matthew, who was born early. In the INEX bandolero race
cars, Sloane Henderson of Franklin,Ohio, who ranks third in the
nation, led all 20 laps of the feature race for her third win of the
season. The program was co-sponsored by Madison International
Speedway and Bear Reality of Burlington.
Visiting, former sportsman champion Jeff Storm
scooted out front of the super late model field with Rob Summers,
John Baumeister, Mike Gunderson and Rick Corso all over the leader.
The first Yellow Book USA caution period ensued that first lap,
after visiting Gregg Pawelski slipping off the surface in between
the third and fourth turn. With the redisplayed green Gunderson and
Summers diced for third until lap five, when Gunderson secured that
position. Two laps later Corso and Summers got together stopping the
action one more time. Underway again, Storm stayed ahead of
Gunderson, who really had the set up tonight. Sonny Schoffen joined
the fray on lap nine, with Baumeister and Gunderson dueling for
second and Storm just a few feet in front. By lap fifteen Baumeister
inched ahead of Gunderson and then Storm for the next four laps. But
then Storm came back in front, as Jason Hicks and Landry Potter came
into the picture, as Schoffen began to have problems with his mount.
Things got real ugly on lap twenty six as fourth
place Potter lapped a slower car that was having problems and they
made contact, causing the lapped car to go around. Out came the
caution and Potter was regaled to the rear of the field. Potter went
to the pits to check his mount and came out before the field got the
green, about twelve cars ahead of the field. The green was displayed
and they came around into four when Potter spun. This caused a melee
with cars flying everywhere to avoid Potter. Out came the black flag
and the field relined, without Potter, and Storm was just ahead of
Gunderson
at this time and now Eddie May was third.
For the next seven laps Gunderson worked on the
leader and May put the pressure on Gunderson. The final caution
came on lap thirty nine when Randy Rodgers and Mike Meyerhofer got
together. On the restart May had picked the best lane, moving by
Gunderson and Storm before the lap ended. Once in front, the
new champion cruised to a big margin victory, Storm held onto second
despite Gunderson’s persistence pressure, taking third in his best
finish of his first full season, for the 2005 super stock champion.
Baumeister was fourth, just ahead of Hicks and Don Turner in his
first appearance of the season here.
In super stock action Sam Redman led the first three laps before Joe
DeCubellis gained the top spot, with Redman in second, Nathan Matz
third, with last weeks feature winner Tom Jastrab third. The first
caution came on lap five, when Vaughn Lesko and Jack Rubach
tangled, causing damage to both mounts. On the restart DeCubellis
charged out front one more time, with Jastrab now third. Entering
lap ten DeCubellis had problems as smoke began and then fire under
the car, as it came to rest at the edge of turn one. His night was
over with Redman taking over that top spot one more time. The race
was behind the leader, as first Jastrab was second, until John Maki
Jr. first moved around Matz and then Jastrab, to begin his chase for
the lead on lap twenty nine. At the checkered Redman was a few feet
ahead of Maki, with Jastrab just ahead
of Scott Norton, Matz and Dave Edwards in another great contest.
The bandolero first four laps were a rocky start to what became a
great race. Each time Sloane Henderson was out front with first
another female competitor Caylie Duncanson running right with the
leader. Alex Arelano left the race early after a racing incident in
turn one, causing extensive damage to his race car.but no injures.
Aaron Moyer joined Duncanson for the
challenge, but Henderson was up to the call through those first
eight laps. Summer shootout champion Kyle Jusits moved into second
on lap nine with Jesse Bernhagen right along side him. Moyer was
back to fourth and Blake Brown all over him.
Those final laps were a Jusits and Bernhagen show,
as Henderson won the race with Bernhagen nipping Jusits who moves
within 15 points of the point leader Kyle Palma with just one night
left for points.Brown was fourth, Moyer fifth and first nighter John
Myers out of Ohio taking sixth, as the second through sixth were
under a blanket for a great finish, after those first four laps.
In the non stop legends feature Dave Townsend moved
in front of Ryan Miles, Joe Scala and Michael Bilderback. Quickly
Miles and Bilderback shot up front with a three way battle for the
lead. Miles led one lap with Bilderback leading the next lap. Ernie
Schaal points leader and now Kyle LaPier fourth .The top four put on
a close show for the entire race with Schaal moving into second on
lap six. Bilderback won the race ahead of Schaal, who put on a super
race with Miles who was third. LaPier took fourth in a new race car,
with Scala fifth and Townsend completing the top six.
