September 8, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI. - The
final weekly race program forever took place at Lake Geneva Raceway,
Friday night. Before the show went on the drivers, race fans and
officials stood in silence to pray for a one of their drivers.
Curt Gnatzig of Hartford, the owner and driver of the number six
legend race cars. Curt and his wife Michelle have a new baby, in
their family, But there are some problems, that we hope our prays
will solve with the help of God. Curt and Michelle, we hope
everything will be fine.
There were championship races for two
divisions tonight. The LGR
late model crown went right down to the feature race before it was
decided.
Sonny Schoffen of McHenry, Illinois won his first late model
championship
and his second of his career. Schoffen also won the feature race for
30 laps, with a last lap pass at the wire from second time driver
Michael Bilderback. In an on track interview, Schoffen praised
Bilderback, thanked his crew, sponsors, car owners and fans for
their support. Mark Ludtke another hometown driver won his third 20
lap feature race in the weapons championship race.
17 year old Ernie Schaal of Wauconda,IL.moved closer towards his first championship,
as the third generation driver still racing with a cast on his right
arm, won his seventh 20 lap feature for the Perfection Auto Body, INEX legends class. The legends still have two more nights, Saturday
September 23rd. and Friday September 29th. before it would be
determined. Schaal and Bilderback are still in a battle for the
crown. Schaal has a 130 point lead.
Woodstock,IL. driver Matt Booker won his third 15
lap feature of the season, stopping fellow driver and points leader
Steve
Doherty from a clean sweep.15 year old Alex Arelano from
Frankfort,IL. won his third 15 lap feature for INEX bandolero
feature of the season. The Luisa Pizzeria mini modifieds were to be
off tonight, but seven showed up and the story was just like last
week. Jerry Giuliano of Schaumburg,IL.took another clean sweep in
the action. Giuliano took fast time, won the dash for 4 laps and
then easily won the 14 lap feature. The rascal outlaw series was
here and super late model driver, Rick Corso of McHenry,IL. won his
first 20 lap feature event.
The late model feature got off to a bad start, causing a complete
restart. Jeff Graf who damaged his mount during the heat, came
back only to retire after the first lap with problems. Michael
Kruschke paced the first four laps, before, Keith Tolf inched in
front, after a duel with Jack Rabey who was all over the former
leader. Right behind the top two was points leader Sonny Schoffen,
Michael Bilderback, Mike Dygon and Paul Dygon. It still looked like
the pace lap at lap nine. By lap twelve Schoffen, Kruschke and
Bilderback were knocking on Tolf’s door. Nothing changed for the
next ten laps.
Then Bilderback got around Kruschke and Schoffen much
to their surprise. By lap twenty five Bilderback was putting the
pressure on the leader, one lap later there was a new leader. On lap
twenty seven Schoffen got around Tolf, with the leader
slightly in front. Brian Ulrich joined the top three one lap later
and it was a promoters dream as this race had one lap to go. Coming
into turn one Bilderback was still securely the leader, but coming
off turn two, the leader lost traction, causing a slight bobble,
giving Schoffen the opportunity to come along side, going into three
it was a dead heat for the lead, as the crowd went wild. Coming off
turn four Bilderback got loose, this gave Schoffen just enough edge
to come across the line, with a one foot advantage for his eighth
win of the season. Bilderback took second, with Ulrich just a few
inches behind him. Tolf grabbed fourth, with Paul Dygon fifth and
Rabey rounding out the top six,in the best feature of the season.
After the race Bilderback said, ”I felt the car get loose and let
off the gas to get straight. Second is a lot better than wiping out
the field behind me”.
The BIC feature was another great race, as Dustin Richards led the
first two laps. Before Robert Palka moved in front the next go
round, with Matt Booker next. There were two Yellow Book USA caution
periods on lap six and eight, giving Booker the room he needed to
move out front. Palka got shuffled back a few spots, with Richards
and fast timer Steve Doherty now joining the hunt. With one lap to
go, Doherty managed to gain the top spot. But coming into three a
lapped car got between the top two and Booker pulled off the win.
Doherty was a close second, with Leo Bujak just ahead of Evan
Townsend, Tom Homan and Palka.
Aaron Moyer jumped out front of the bandolero feature with Kyle
Palma, Dwight Dunlap and Blake Brown next.Palma worked on the leader
for five laps before gaining the lead. Quickly Alex Arelano moved in
behind the new leader, with Jesse Bernhagen next. On lap eight the
top two were side by side for the front position. On lap ten Arelano
pulled off a slick move and the lead changed. A lap eleven caution
tightened up the field, but despite a late challenge by Bernhagen,
Arelano held on for the win. Bernhagen was second, Palma took third,
Brown was fourth and quick qualifier Kyle Jusits was sixth.
The legends feature was just like the points race. A contest between
Ernie Schaal and Michael Bilderback. Robb Duffek led the first three
laps, before fast timer Schaal flew in front, with Bilderback right
on his back side. On lap ten Kyle LaPier
joined the frey, as it ended that way. Schaal took the win gaining
five points with just two points nights to go. Bilderback was
second, with LaPier right along side him. Ryan Miles who did not
time was fourth, Ross Kenseth claimed fifth and Hermann
Greinig a close sixth.
In the weapons feature Michael Shorten paced the field for the first
ten laps, looking like a sure winner. But Mark Ludtke somehow
grabbed the lead with just five laps to go and won the event over
Shorten, Mark Tomasi, Glenn Tomasini, Brad Jones and the new
champion Andy Krueger.
It took Rick Corso just three laps to take over the top spot of the
twenty lap feature for the rascal outlaw series. Corso ran away and
hid for the win. Mark Findley was second, Kip Novotny was
third, with Lenny Adams, Chris Bedore and Jason Mahoney completing
the top six.
Next Friday night will be the tournament of destruction with an
unlimited amount of trailer races, plus the first ever appearance of
the fire breathing, car eating Broad Bob’s Transzilla. This monster
will be making appearances all over
Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois this week. There will
be many other events for the whole family. Sponsoring the show will
be Bumper to Bumper of Salem. The program begins at 7 pm. rain or
moon light.
