Big Night at
LGR!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
May 5, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI.
-14
year old Kyle Justis from Kenosha had a great opening night at Lake
Geneva Raceway’s special small car spring opener on Friday night.
The big show was sponsored by Bilderback Auto Parts of South
Beloit,Illinois.
Justis first took
fast time, just like he did in last seasons event for the bandolero
race cars. Then Kyle took second in the large heat and was the
surprise winner of the 15 lap feature.16 year old Kyle LaPier out of
Belvidere,IL.started off where he left off last year winning the 15
lap Perfection Auto Body INEX legends feature race. Defending
Luisa’s pizzeria mini modifieds champion Mike VanHouten of Cary,IL.
had a great night by taking a clean sweep.
Mike took fast time, won
the heat and the 15 lap feature starting off the season just the way
he hoped it would go. Chris Bedore of Popular Grove, IL won the open
wheels rascal outlaws 20 lap feature, but missed a clean sweep by
taking second in his heat, along with fast time. The first night for
the super mini cup kids was a nice one, as 10 year old Dakota Potts
of Zion,IL.won his first feature here and won his heat. Then three
time champion and the defending champion Ken Jones from Lomard,IL.
had an excellent night, by winning the feature for 20 laps, winning
the dash, taking second in time and second in his heat, for the
super mini cups, adults.
Defending champion Kyle Palma had qualifying problems, but by
feature time his second row start spot gave him the lead before a
quarter lap was completed. He led the entire event despite a Yellow
Book USA caution period and ran away with the race. Fast qualifier
Kyle Justis moved into second with five laps to go, but time ran out
to challenge Palma. A post race inspection dropped Palma from the
finish and Justis was awarded the win with his second place run.
Five new comers were next, Alex Argiano, Steve Grossman, Aaron
Moyer, Caylie Duncanson, with second year driver Hope Bidlack.
The legends feature looked like 14 year old Michael Bilderback might
complete his clean sweep after breaking the track qualifying record
earlier in the evening, then taking the dash win at the wire, but a
fifth lap check up by a cluster of cars, left Michael no where to
go, but into the melee.
This broke his front
bumper loose, causing a black flag two laps later, dashing his hopes
for that clean sweep. Second year driver Ryan Miles was the leader
since the double greens, driving a flawless race despite challenges
first from Don Fort Jr. then Joe Scala and Curt Gnatzig. Then
Bilderback moved along Gnatzig, just before the black came out.
Second in time Kyle LaPier was right with Bilderback, before he
retired to the pits. By lap ten LaPier moved past Ernie Schaal. Then
Miles started to smoke and on lap twelve the first and only
caution came for a tangle between four cars. On the restart Miles
received the black for a lot more smoke as Schaal and LaPier battle
for the top spot, just as Bilderback came back on the
track with three laps to go, but five laps down. LaPier inched ahead
with three laps to go, as Schaal didn’t let up the pressure. LaPier
won the race with Schaal right behind him, Scala, Fort, Gnatzig and
Chris Helgerson were next, in one of the best feature finishes
of the night.
The mini modified feature saw Curt Thomazin shoot out front with
Bill Trusky, John DeMay and Jesse Johnson all over the leader. On
lap five something caused Barry Trusky to fly off of the track just
into turn one. The caution appeared and the leader for some unknown
reason went into the pits and never returned for the remainder of
the non stop event to follow. On the restart Mike VanHouten raced
Doctor Tooth Ken Johnson in the Vince Heywood race car to the corner
side by side. No one would give, but coming off turn two, VanHouten
inched ahead and then never looked back for the win. Johnson helds
onto second with Scott McCarthy third, Jesse Johnson was fourth,
Trusky fifth and DeMay sixth, in another good race.
There were three different leaders before a lap fifteen caution
slowdown the action in the super mini cup feature that seventeen
cars started. On the restart leader 15 year old Jake Jump held onto
the lead he gained on lap six. Then with just three laps to go Jump
spun in turn four and Ken Jones was the new leader, going on to win
the twenty lap race. Erik Gehrke was a very close second, in another
close race.
It wasn’t series champion Kip Novotny night dropping out of each
event he was in,after having belt problems.Rookie Jason Mahoney
paced the field for the first six laps of the feature for the rascal
outlaws. Then quick timer Chris Bedore moved out front and easily
won the main event, with Mahoney for a great showing in his first
start. Jeff LaSage was a close second,as second year driver Jim
Thiel, Mark Findley was next with John Binkert rounding out the top
six.
Next Friday night is the season opener for the Family fun night
show. The Legends, bandoleros, mini-modifieds, super mini cups,
super mini cup kids, BIC cars, rascal outlaws and will be joined by
the return of the LGR late models (super 8) type cars with no
increase in admission prices. Time trials begin at 6pm. races at
7:30 sharp.
