DeCubellis Continues Weapons Win Streak, First Career Win for
Homan,
Clean Sweep for Giuliano

August 11, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI.
-The weather was nearly perfect,
the pit area was jammed with a lot of race cars and there was a good
crowd in the grandstand at Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night. Joe
DeCubellis of Burlington, a super stock driver got into the number
seventy four weapons race car of Jeff Schultz and made it look great
by continuing
the win streak that Schultz has. First Joe took fast time, won the
heat race and won the feature race from the tech shack to take a
clean sweep in the second year division. Tom Homan,a second
generation driver from Antioch, Illinois won his first ever 15 lap
Basic International car feature. Jerry Giuliano of
Schaumburg.IL.took a clean sweep of the Luisa’s pizzeria mini
modifieds. Jerry took fast time, won the heat and ran away with the
15 lap feature race. Kip Novotny of Johnsburg,IL.just missed a clean
sweep for the defending champion of the rascal outlaw series.
Kip nearly broke his one lap qualifying
record, second in his heat and easily won the 15 lap feature.
Michael Bilderback of South Beloit, IL.won his fifth 15 lap
Perfection Auto Body INEX legends feature. The LGR late model
feature for 25 laps went to Union Grove’s Keith Tolf for his third
main event of the season, moving him to within 45 points of the top
of the standings, with one month to go.
The legends feature started off with tempers flaring
as the first lap was completed. Ernie Schaal and Tom Palma got
together, causing Schaal to spin wildly around. The first Yellow
Book USA caution came out. As the cars got into single file order
for the reline, things got ugly, as Schaal raced along side Palma,s
howing his displeasure, waving a gesture out the window. Then on the
back straightaway, Schaal squeezed Palma up to the wall. The INEX
Official immediately came down the ramp and pointed Schaal into the
Pits. As the race cars got ready for the restart, Palma got the
black flag from starter Todd Booker. Hermann Greinig again slipped
in front, with Curt Gnatzig, and Kyle LaPier side by side for
second. Within two more
laps Michael Bilderback was knocking on their door. The caution came
out for a spin by Richard Miller, right in front of the pack bearing
down on him. On the restart the group shuffled dramatically, as
Bilderback and LaPier raced for the front spot. The top five came so
close together if any thing would happen it would wipe out the front
of the field. The final caution with one lap to go, set up a green,
white, checkered situation and spoiled a finish to remember.
Bilderback held onto the lead for
the win, just inches ahead of Ryan Miles the fastest qualifier who
nipped LaPier for second. Gnatzig was fourth at the wire. Greinig
was fifth and Joe Scala was six. Three drivers were written up for
the earlier incident and more action against these drivers could
come.
The weapons feature was a contest to see if Joe DeCubellis could
duplicate the feat set the last four weeks, by Jeff Schultz. Anthony
Vito crept in front as the double greens were displayed. By lap four
Mark Tomasi came along side the leader, getting by before the lap
ended. Mark Ludtke worked his way up front and on lap ten, he gained
the front spot. DeCubellis
finally moved into second with five laps to go. Ludtke held back
numerous challenges, then broke the four week win streak, taking the
contest. DeCubellis was second, with Reid Kahrs Jr. third, Tomasi
claimed fourth, points leader Andy Krueger was fifth and Vito
rounding out the top six. The race wasn’t actually over, as a post
inspection at the tech shack, dropped Ludtke and Kahrs from the
finish, due to a displaced shock. DeCubellis was declared the
winner, keeping the win streak intact. New comer Brian Jones was
moved to sixth and everyone else moved up.
The BIC feature was non stop excitement as Travis Dean led the race
from the off set. Kevin Lynn, Jason Conrad and rookie Ronnie Mink
were next. Somehow within nine laps, birthday driver Steve Doherty
the fast qualifier was along side
Dean, then quickly in front before the lap ended. With just three
laps to go, Tom Homan who was haunting the leader since lap nine,
shadowing his every move, used a lapped car for his benefit taking
the lead and going on to his first win.
Doherty was second, with Matt Booker third, followed by Dean, Robert
Palka and Lynn.
The mini modified feature may have short on cars, but unbelievable
on action, as Chris Thomazin led the first lap. His father Curt
scooted around his son. By lap four quick timer Jerry Giuliano was
up to second. It took some time before Giuliano caught the leader,
taking the lead on lap nine, then taking the win six laps later.
Curt Thomazin was second, with Vince Heywood third, Scott McCarthy
fourth, Chris Thoamzin fifth and Johnathan Gagne sixth.
Somehow Chris Bedore moved from his starting position into the lead
within one lap and looked like an easy winner By the time Kip
Novotny moved into a challenging situation, Bedore dropped to the
infield with problems so no one got to see the great battle that
never happened. Once in front Novotny went on to win the race by
nearly three quarters of a lap over Jeff LaSage, rookie Jason
Mahoney, Jim Thiel, Mark Findley and John Benkert.
The bandolero feature stayed close together as Kyle
Palma the defending champion grabbed the lead as the pack headed
into turn one, with Blake Brown at his side.Coming off turn two
Brown inched ahead but Palma wasn’t done, drawing even at turn
three. Coming off turn four at the line, Brown was the leader. It
stayed that way with Hope Bidlack and Alex Arelano battling for the
next position. Arelano moved into second by lap six, with tight
racing behind him. Not gaining a lot on the leader it looked
like Brown would pull off the win.But with just six laps to go,
Brown spun on his own and out came the caution. Arelano was now the
new leader and walked away from the field to his third win. During
an on track interview, Arelano said, ”I love this track and I want
to thank the LaPier’s and everyone else for helping me”. The rookie
driver was followed across the line, by Steven Grossman, Hope
Bidlack, Aaron Moyer, Kyle Jusits and Palma.
The late model feature was another great event, as
Paul Dygon moved in front of the field, with Ralph Gentile, Josh
Wallace, Sonny Schoffen and Carrie Dygon bearing down on him. Keith
Tolf was on the move, along with Wallace, as they got
by Schoffen and Gentile. By lap seven, the lead was about to change,
with Tolf the new leader. Wallace tucked himself behind the leader
with Gentile next. On lap thirteen Carrie Dygon spun, with
quick timer Brian Ulrich heading to the pits
for some unknown reason. On the restart Tolf walked away from the
field, but a final caution came when a tight running Wallace and
Schoffen tangled, with eleven to go. This tightened up the field as
Ken Johnson moved into second didn’t let Tolf have an easy win, as
Johnson nearly gained the top spot before the checkered. Tolf did
come home the winner, with Johnson, Paul Dygon, a recovering Ulrich,
Schoffen and Wallace for a real thriller.
This coming Friday night seven divisions will be
here. Time trials begin at 6pm.racing at 7:30.
