May and Pierce at Six! First Win for Norton!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
July 29, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI.
- The Cornwell Tool Dealers
sponsored the race program Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway.
The weather was just like last night, but some hardy race fans came
out to bake in the sun until 7:48 pm. But the race program was
excellent with lots of great racing Points leaders Eddie May
of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Erik Pierce of Lake in the
Hills,IL.won the 40 lap super late model feature and 25 lap
Performance Unlimited sportsman feature, respectively. Scott Norton,
a second generation driver won his first McHenry Limousine 30 lap
feature of the season, for
the Wonder Lake,IL.racer.Chris Bedore of Popular Grove,IL. made it
two for two in the rascal outlaw series.
(there were no notes available for the super
late model feature) Eddie
May the current point leader took the lead after a hard fought
battle and
stayed just ahead of Randy Rodgers for the win. There was some
excellent
racing behind the top two also. Landry Potter was third, just ahead
of Jamie Wallace Sonny Schoffen and Mike Meyerhofer. The quick
qualifier. Meyerhofer went to the pits during the race, thinking he
had a cut tire and came through the field one more time to capture
sixth.
The super stock feature wasn’t even started, when Mike Olson retired
to the pits with problems. Randy Schneider moved off the front row
and stayed ahead of Vaughn Lesko for the first six laps of the race.
Joe DeCubellis challenged first, before Scott Norton knocked on the
door. Once in second Norton needed only three laps to climb in
front. Schneider held onto second for four laps before Craig Mertes
raced around him. Then Tom Roney and Tom Jastrab came up to race
with Schneider, who dropped back with problems on lap fifteen. Third
through eighth mixed it up for the final nine laps. Norton
was the winner, with Mertes second just ahead of Jastrab, Darryl
Traber who came on strong, points leader Adam Regnier and Roney
rounding out the top six.
In sportsman competition Cliff Adee had to rush to the pits before
the start, when his right front tire went down. Adee made it back
just as the double greens were waved high in the air. Andy Kulka
moved in front of the field, with Gary Norton, Rick Rowlett and John
Janssen next. Lap three it was a dead heat for the top spot, as
Norton in the only true Ford raced side by side with Kulka. The lead
changed on lap four, with Janssen taking over second one lap later.
It took Janssen four laps to contain Norton who still wasn’t content
with second. On lap eleven Erik Pierce joined the group up front, by
lap fifteen after some great side by side excitement Pierce moved in
front, winning the race over Janssen, fast timer James Swan, Norton,
Ken Smart and Bobby Giers.
The rascal outlaw feature went non stop with Bill Gundlach out front
for the first lap, before Jeff LeSage scurried by. With five laps to
go, Chris Bedore caught the leader and moved in front for the win.
LeSage was second, with Mark Findley third, Jason Mahoney fourth,
Jim Thiel fifth and Gundlach sixth.
Next Saturday night Speedway Auto Mall of Machesney Park,IL. will
present the INEX legends and bandolero qualifier. Drivers from
throughout the eastern region are expected. A $1000 to win the
legends 40 lap feature will bring in drivers from some 9 states. The
super late models, super stocks and sportsman are also on the card
with no increase in spectator admission prices.
