May Masters Another Super Late Main!!

July 22, 2006; Lake
Geneva, WI.
- The weather forecast stated
just 30 % chance of rain (same as Friday night and all day Sunday)
and rain it did. But the show went on right at 7pm, despite
cancelling time trials. Races were lined up, per average points.
Eddie May from Crystal Lake, Illinois won the 40 lap super late
model feature. Last week Dave Edwards of Salem won the 30 lap
McHenry Limousine super stock feature, in the tech shack.
Tonight Edwards won the feature race, on the
track, in his second win of the season. Jeff Schultz of Lake Geneva
won his third 20 lap weapons division feature race. Alex Yerdizerski
of Wisconsin Dells was the surprise winner in his first career 20
lap feature race, for the Central states region/NASCAR super mini
cups and Sam Reding of Crystal Lake,IL. took a clean sweep of the
vintage race cars, by winning the heat and the 12 lap feature, in
his Fred Lorenz relica 1965 Ford Galaxie.
The double greens were high in the air for the start of the super
late model feature with pole sitters John Baumeister and Mike Lang
in a dead heat for the lead. Lang led each lap at the strip, but on
lap five, the first Yellow Book USA caution came out when Jason
Hicks got together with Mike Gunderson who had just gotten by
Baumeister. On the restart Terry Patnode flew in front after working
on Lang for two laps. Two laps later Eddie May quickly followed with
a new side by side show up front. On lap thirteen May was the new
leader. On lap eighteen there was another caution and Landry Potter,
in the Joe Fischer mount dropped out, from over heating. Potter
returned but left again on lap twenty three for the remainder of the
event, finishing fifteenth. On lap thirty four Sonny Schoffen got up
on the wall, but made it down in one piece, that brought out another
caution. Schoffen returned, finishing tenth.
May held back some serious challenges from Randy
Rodgers the next five laps. The final lap was all May as he took the
win, over Rodgers, Mike Meyerhofer nipped Patnode at the wire, Jamie
Wallace was fifth and Hicks rounded out the top six.
The super stock feature got off to a rocky start as Derrick Pierre
and Nate Matz bumped together, causing Matz tire to go down. Out
came the caution and on the restart Joe DeCubellis moved in front,
with Craig Mertes on his trail. Sam Redman, Randy Schneider and Tom
Roney diced back and forth for second. By lap eight Dave Edwards was
moving up and by lap eleven second place Mertes could feel the
pressure. Redman and Schneider raced too close causing Schneider to
now have a tire go down, causing the final caution. DeCubellis had
everything his own way for over twelve laps, but now Edwards got by
Mertes on the restart, with Adam Regnier and John Maki Jr. all over
Mertes. With ten laps to go, Edwards came in front, with Maki third.
Those final ten laps were great, as DeCubellis moved back in front
on lap twenty four and twenty five. The final lap was worth the
price of admission. Edwards pulled off the win over DeCubellis at
his side, Regnier nipped Maki at the line, with Mertes and Tom
Jastrab side by side for a real thriller.
The weapons feature was another good one. Anthony Vito held onto the
leadfor five laps, before Mark Tomasi inched his way in front. The
field never got away from each other, as Mike Herwald joined the
fray up front, taking over the lead on lap nine. It took Jeff
Schultz until lap sixteen to gain the top spot, winning the race
just ahead of Herwald.
Sam Morici took the lead coming for the wire at the checkered for a
great race, with only one caution on lap eighteen of the twenty lap
race. But Morici’s win was taken away in a post race inspecation at
2;30 am. This gave the win to Alex
Yerdizerski who led two laps. Ken Jones was next, Eric Gerhke third.
Jeff Myers who led laps thirteen through seventeen was fouth. Mick
Ellis was fifth in another close run race.
This coming Saturday night Cornwell Tool dealers sponsor the
program. The open wheel rascal outlaws join the regular three
divisions. Time trials will begin at 5;45 pm. racing is slated for
7pm.
