By Dale R. Erdmann

June 23, 2006;  Lake Geneva, WI. -  It was another great night, as the largest crowd ever came out for 1st. National Real Estate of Kenosha night at Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night. The weekly program was marred by a first lap in the dash for the Lusia’s pizzeria mini modifieds, as Mike VanHouten of Cary, Illinois, the defending champion.VanHouten violently flipped his race car up to four and one half times, but escaped injury, in a racing incident that  totally demolished his number 24 race car.

In the Weapons division, Jeff Schultz (#74) raced his brand-new car past Reid Kahrs, Jr. (#97) to win the feature.

In feature wins, Sonny Schoffen of Crystal Lake,IL. won his third 30 lap feature for the late model cars. First wins of the season went to Jeff Myers of Elgin,IL. in the super mini cups feature that was won at the line. The Schultz Brothers, Phil of Silver Lake and Jeff of Salem, won the mini modified 15 lap feature and the 25 lap weapons feature, respectively. Matt Booker of Wonder Lake,IL. won another 15 lap Basic International feature race and 8 year old Morgan Sessel nearly took a clean sweep in the super mini cup kids division. Morgan took fast time, second in the heat and won the 10 lap feature race.

Rob Maule paced the late model feature for the first five laps before Ralph Gentile charged in front, with the first Yellow Book USA caution period coming one lap later for a spin by Maule. On the restart Gentile walked away from Joe Rusciano, Paul Edmundson, Michael Kruschke and Ken Johnson. Edmundson worked his way into second on lap seven with a very tight group behind him. On lap eleven Edmundson nearly lost it coming off turn four, slipping and sliding down the straight away before going around and the next caution was shown. Maule and fast qualifier Brian Ulrich made contact at the same time. With the green flying, Gentile again darted ahead of the fast charging field. The battle was behind the leader, as Rusciano, Johnson and now Sonny Schoffen were working their way forward. Schoffen won the fight after six laps, taking the lead on lap sixteen. Two laps later there was another caution to tighten up the field even more. It was then non stop racing as Schoffen held back Kruschke for the win. Third place was Gentile, Rusciano was fourth, Johnson fifth and Keith Tolf, last weeks feature winner, sixth.

Defending weapons champion Reid Kahrs Jr. slipped in front of the field at the drop of the green, with Mark Ludtke last weeks feature winner next. The front remained the same until lap nine, when Jeff Schultz moved into second and then in front two laps later. Kahrs wasn’t happy with second moving back in front one lap later. This see/saw battle up front continued until lap seventeen when Brian Hillringhouse got around Kahrs. For the rest of the race it was a show for the lead, that Schultz would win at the wire. Hillringhouse took second, with fast timer Andy Krueger next, Jamie Vetter in his first night was fourth, Ludtke was fifth and Mike Herwald sixth of this non stop event.

It took Phil Schultz just three laps to gain the lead, after Scott McCarthy led the first two go rounds. Last weeks feature winner Curt Thomazin chased Schultz the whole race, taking second to Schultz for his first win of the year for the former champion driving the Vince Heywood machine. Jerry Giuliano was a close third, with Scott Johnson in his first race ever was fourth. Chris Thomazin was fifth and McCarthy sixth in mini modified action.

The BIC feature would be another non stop main, with Gary Mondus leading the first lap of the race, before Kevin Lynn moved on top for one lap. Robert Palka then went in front moving away from the field until Todd Booker caught him with five laps to go. Booker won the race over quick timer Steve Doherty who nearly got him, but lapped cars got in the way. Kevin Hill was third, Jason Conrad was next with Leo Bujak was fifth and Lynn held onto sixth.

Next Friday night the Edmundson racing team with the help of the American Dairy Association will pass out milk to the first group through the front gate. Yellow Book USA will sponsor the evening for the final day of the month with  six divisions of race cars here. Time trials begin at 6pm.racing at 7:30.
