What a difference a week makes, as summer like weather came to
southeastern Wisconsin, all in one day. The family fun night race
show at Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night saw some great racing.
Michael Bilderback of South Beloit, Illinois won the 20 lap
Perfection Auto Body INEX legends feature race again on the last lap
to the delight of the best crowd in this early part of the season
and the checkered flag year here.
Chris Bedore out
of Popular Grove, IL. won his second 18 lap feature for
the open wheel Rascal Outlaws.Kyle Palma of Delavan did something
that
doesn’t happen very often, the defending champion took a clean sweep
in
the INEX bandolero race cars. The 15 year old driver took fast time,
won the heat and the 15 lap feature race.Rockford,IL. driver Steve
Doherty won the 20 lap Basic International cars feature that ran on
the old quarter mile track and Brian Ulrich of Racine won the late
model feature for 30 laps.
Chris Helgerson moved in front of the legends feature at the drop of
the green flag, with Ernie Schaal and Kyle LaPier hot on his trail.
Schaal grabbed the lead on lap two with LaPier slipping into second.
By lap five Michael Bilderback and quick timer Ryan Miles moved
through the field a took over third and fourth, before a spin by
Miles, brought out the first Yellow Book USA caution period. On the
restart Schaal walked the field, with LaPier and Bilderback putting
on a show for second. Curt
Gnatzig workered his way into fourth on lap ten, with Ross Kenseth
next.
Nic Savaglio spun on
lap twelve slowing the action one more time. With the green out the
top four were extremely close, as Schaal led the event. Miles spun
three laps later, setting up a five lap dash for the top six all
looking for a win. Underway for that final time, Schaal stayed in
command of the top spot.Bilderback and LaPier were in a see/saw race
for second, as Gnatzig and Kenseth fought for the next spot. Somehow
Bilderback moved to the outside of the top two and inched his way in
front with just three laps to go.It was a parade lap finish with
side by side action all the way to the wire, with Bilderback taking
the win over Schaal, who staying ahead of LaPier, with Gnatzig
fourth.Don Fort Jr. nipped Kenseth for fifth.
The late model feature started with Rob Maule and Paul Edmundson in
a dead heat for the lead, with Maule setting the pace during lap
one, then Edmundson led the next four laps, before Brian Ulrich got
past first Keith Tolf and then Edmundson for that front spot. Tolf
followed the new leader, never letting him out of sight. Ralph
Gentile worked on the former leader, with Joe Rusciano along side
trying to advance.
Just after the half way
mark,Ken Johnson and Edmundson tangled stopping the action for the
first time This slowdown gave fast qualifier Sonny Schoffen the
break he needed, when the green reappeared the point leader got past
Gentile for third. Ulrich went on to score the victory with everyone
close, Tolf finished second, Schoffen third. Rusciano out by Gentile
at the wire for fourth and Andy Evaerts sixth.
Steven Grossman led lap number one of the bandolero feature with
Alex Arelano second. Lap two somehow Kyle Palma moved in front of
the field, leading until the only caution, as Arelano got too wide
slamming into the protection barrels in front of the turn four wall.
Arelano was shaken but
not injuried, his race car would need some repairs. The green flew
one more time and Palma never looked backed taking the win over
point leader Kyle Jusits. Rookie racer Grossman, Aaron Moyer, Hope
Bidlack and Arelano.
Putting the BIC cars on the quarter never stopped Steve Doherty who
took the lead on lap three, with Steve Kreft the leader for the
first two laps.Once in front it’s was watch out for lapped cars.
Fasttimer Matt Booker secured second, as Doherty went on to win the
event. Tom Homan was third, with Evan Townsend in fourth. Kevin Hill
claimed fifth and Jason Conrad sixth.
The rascal outlaws feature saw John Binkert in front for one lap
before Chris Bedore flew past and pulled off the win seventeen laps
later.Jeff LeSage finished second with John LeSage third, rookie
Jason Mahoney was a close fourth, Bill Gundlach fifth and Binkert in
sixth.
Friday night racing continues with time trials at 6pm.racing will
