LAST NASCAR SHOW AT LGR?
By Dale R. Erdmann

August 3, 2005;  Lake Geneva, WI. - On Saturday night August 6th. the NASCAR turing elite series returns to Lake Geneva Racewaymlocated in Southeastern Wisconsin. The facility is less than one hour from four major cities in Wisconsin and Illinois. The show is sponsored by Auto zone parts stores. The first show here was back in the 1980’s when they were called the ARTGO series.Since that time, the race track went from being a flat quarter mile track,to todays one third mile paved banked oval. ”Drivers like the track”stated Kevin Dawson the owner and Promoter of the complex.

This could be the final show ever of it’s kind. The reason is the raceway will close at the end of the 2007 season. Now it’s not a profitable show, just the prestige of   running it,is the big reason for having it.The event is named after a second generation
driver from Franklin, the late Al Schill Jr.who died in March of 1999, at his home. Al’s father Al Schill Sr. has raced at LGR since 1968. In 1969 he won the modified championship. This weekend Al will be racing in the 150 lap feature event for the
super late models. The future stars of NASCAR will also compete in the big show. Along with some other local favorites besides Schill.Randy Rodgers from Lake Geneva, the 04 co champion here, Jamie Wallace from Pell Lake the current LGR points leader and former champion here. Erik Darnell from Beach Park,IL. a third generation driver, who’s grand father Bay Darnell raced against Schill for that first mod championship. Bay was a USAC champion.

The show over the years has produced some big names who went on to national fame. Dick Trickle,Mark Martin,Matt Kenseth,Rusty Wallace,Jim Sauter and Jimmy Johnson who was an off road racer here. Allan Kuwicki won his first ever feature here in 1975.
