Joosten Wins MSCS Series Round One
Gunderson Claims LGR SS Win!

By Dale R. Erdmann,Natasha Fabian and Kim Straube

April 30, 2005;  Lake Geneva, WI. -  It was the last day of April and race fans were delighted to see this month go, as tonight the raceway had hail, as brisk northwest winds brought the temperatures back down to the low forties, as the races began. Tonight our racing family remembered Walter Holland out of Pell Lake, who passed away on April 24th. Holland raced at LGR since 1969. Then his son Scott and now grandson Dustin followed Walter’s path, racing here. Dustin was followed around the oval by many fellow drivers, all holding black flags. Another friend Duane Gay was also remembered.
Duane died last Thursday April 28th. at the age of 49, after a long bout with cancer. Gay was a local broadcaster at channel 18in Milwaukee, when he used the LGR results on his newscast, every week.

Basic International Car feature winner, Bob Koch.

The complete race program was finished despite the weather and Kenny Joosten  of Wonder Lake, Illinois won the all important Midwest sportsman championship series round one 40 lap feature race. Mike Gunderson from Wind Lake, the McHenry Limousine super stock point leader, won his first 25 lap feature. Eddie May, the 1986 late model champion, out of Crystal Lake,IL. won his first super late model feature for 40 laps and Bob Koch of McHenry,IL. easily clean swept, the Double R towing Basic International divisions, order of events. Koch took fast time, won the dash and
despite a spin, ran away with the 20 lap feature.

The super late model feature saw Terry Patnode slip in front of the field at the drop of the double greens. Dave Thomas, Rob Summers and Michael Kruschke were in hot pursuit. Nothing changed until lap ten, as Kruschke moved into third. Then things heated up as third place changed again on lap twelve, as Summers moved back into that position. Two laps later Eddie May moved up to fourth, with Jamie Wallace right behind him.Kent Burkoth was along side trying to move up, as Patnode was nearly a straight away ahead entering lap twenty one.

May finally got by Summers on lap twenty two, with Wallace at his side, then using a slower car to move by May on lap twenty four. The last thing Patnode wanted to see was a Yellow Book USA caution period, but one lap later Summers looped it in front of most of the field. Everyone missed him, but the slowdown would stir things. Patnode dashed into the corner just ahead of Wallace, Thomas, May and Burkoth.

Patnode held onto the lead until lap thirty, when Wallace worked his way by. Forthe next five laps it was very close, but May finally got by Thomas, then Patnode and set out on the leader. With just a few laps to go Wallace had May, with a cluster
behind him, consisting of Patnode, Thomas, Burkoth, Jeff Holmgren Jr. and now Fran Prestay. The boned chilled crowd went wild as May tried to get under Wallace, with everyone behind these two waiting for a mistake. With the white flag about to fly, May was just in front of Wallace. Coming into turn one, allace darted ahead, coming turn two, it was adead heat for the lead. Into third, May crept ahead, but coming off turn four it was to close to call. Coming across the line, May was the winner, followed by Wallace, Patnode, Burkoth, Holmgren and Prestay nipping Thomas, in an extremely close finish.

The non stop super stock feature started off with Dustin Holland and Craig Mertes in a see saw battle for the top spot. Holland led the first two laps, with Mertes moving in front on lap three. Ken Eisbrenner got by Holland on lap six, with Al
Kuphal right behind them. Just behind this tight running group was Josh Wallace, Dan Clemenz, Mike Gunderson and John Maki Jr.

By lap ten Mertes was four cars lengths ahead of Eisbrenner, with Gunderson now third some three car lengths behind him. It took Eisbrenner three more laps to catch the leader and two more to get by him. Gunderson quickly followed, staying
along side Mertes in what would lead up to another great feature finish. The leader held his competition at bay, until lap twenty three when Gunderson came along side the leader. With the white flag out it was going to be another barn burner.

Gunderson and Eisbrenner ran a clean race for those final two laps, with Gunderson the winner. Eisbrenner, Mertes, Kuphal, Clemenz and Holland were under a blanket at the wire.
