Schlick, Doherty & Fryer First In Lake Geneva Enduro Labor Day Memorial Special
By Daryl Traber

September 5, 2005;  Lake Geneva, WI. -  On a picture perfect day with clear skies and 82degrees, the afternoon at the Lake Geneva Raceway was full of activities during the annual Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series program held at the track. Matt Schlick collected his second Series win of the season during the running of the Klement’s Sausage Co. "Mark ‘Tiny’ Amborn Memorial Labor Day 301" enduro at the Lake Geneva Raceway.

Photo Highlights

Schlick was the overall winner and first in the "A" class over Art Speciale. Tracy Carr collected his first "B" class win of the year over Don Reidenbach and in the "C" class Brian Hillringhouse was first over Julie DeNood.

Jack Rabey took the lead from Steve Doherty at lap ten of the "Roz Auto Salvage 100" 4-cylinder compact enduro event and never looked back but was later disqualified during post race inspection. Doherty had a two lap advantage over runner-up Evan Townsend for the win. The rest of the top five included Nathan Matz, Mike Haugan and Dylan Helfenstein.
Ron Fryer who representing Borchardt Speed/Automotive and Lunsford Motorsports was the winner of the "Ron Darroch Memorial 15" celebrity race. Fryer edged out 2004 Nascar touring rookie of the year driver Russ Blakeley for the win. Blakeley started one lap down at the start and nearly won the event in honor of his friend and former crew member "Mark ‘Tiny Amborn". Following Blakeley at the line was Eric Mueller, Chase Leonard and Roy Rozanske.

The Klement’s Sausage race was apparently won by the "brat" but is still under review.

The Perfection Truck & Accessories "Penny Pickup" for the kid’s was a success as children from ages11& under battled for over 40,000 pennies plus $50 worth of special coins on the front stretch of the 1/3 mile paved oval.

The 301 lap main event had Mike Herwald dart out front in the early going. Herwald, making a strong run after a missing the last two Series events had company however as Chuck Pinkalla and Brandon Clubb were close behind by the 25 lap marker. Pinkalla got by Herwald a lap later and started to distance himself from the rest of the field. By lap 50 it was Pinkalla ahead of Phil Speciale, Herwald, Clubb and Carr. Phil Speciale started to close on Pinkalla on lap 68 just before the field stopped for the first of three mandatory refueling pit stops on lap 75. At that point it was Phil Speciale out front ahead of Pinkalla, Mark Fogel, Herwald and Ron Vandolah.

As the green was again flown, the new battle for the lead had new drivers in the mix as Phil Speciale was still the leader by lap 100 but had Tracy Carr, Fogel, Pinkalla and Schlick full in his rear view mirror. The field was slowed on lap 108 for Don Wilson as he was forced hard in to the wall by Ken Childre and needed to be removed from his car as his car remained in a unsafe area of the track. Schlick was starting to make his way to the front as he was shown in second place at the 125 lap marker. The battle for the third position intensified for next twenty five circuits between Pinkalla, Carr and Art Speciale. Just before the second refueling pit stop, Schlick grabbed the lead from Phil Speciale. At lap 146 it was Schlick, Phil Speciale, Pinkalla, Carr and Art Speciale.

As the pit crews made great stops to the top running cars Schlick seemed to have the upper hand as he broke from the field but still had the Speciale brothers and Pinkalla within five seconds of the lead. Schlick held the point up to the 225 lap marker as the field would make one last stop for fuel. At this point it was Schlick out front ahead of Tracy Carr, Art Speciale, Phil Speciale and Pinkalla.

Pinkalla suffered a flat tire on lap 228 to take his chances away from his first career win after a great run.. The final 75 laps would be a race to finish between Schlick and the Speciale brothers. The three would swap the lead several times in the remaining laps with Schlick having the upper hand at the line finishing one second ahead of Art Speciale and three seconds over Phil Speciale. The only other car on the lead lap at the finish was Carr. The top five overall at the finish were Schlick, Art Speciale, Phil Speciale, Carr and Tom Barnharst.

The next Series event is scheduled for Saturday September 10 at the Grundy County Speedway(Morris, IL) for the running of the "Roger Helland Memorial 250". Pit gate opens at 3:30, grandstand at 4:30, mechanics race at 6:30 and the 250 lap main event at 7:00. Call (262) 895-6682 for further inf..
