First Career Wins for Spittle, Swan, Grenlund and
Robinson!
By Dale R. Edrmann |
August 19, 2005; Lake Geneva, WI. - The third largest crowd of the season
came out on another perfect weather night at Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night. Veteran
driver Vern Brown of Waunakee could have taken a clean sweep, if problems hadnt
taken him out of qualifying. But winning the heat and winning the 20 lap feature for the
Formula Indy
cars, for a back of the pack start in each event.Chad Ross won the 12 lap Midwest sport
ruck feature.
Curt Thomazin of Elkhorn won his fourth Lusias pizzeria mini
modified feature of the season.Jim Robinson of Orfordsville and David Grenlund of Sharon
won the 15 lap feature for the weapons cars. James Swan of Lake Geneva won his
first ever LGR late model feature for 25 lap contest in the Sonny Schoffen mount and Jason
Spittle of Trevor a rookie driver in the Double R towing Basic International cars won his
first career feature for 15 laps.
With a season high number of race cars, the weapons feature would go non stop, as Anthony
Vito in a rare appearance led the first lap, before Reid Kahrs Jr. moved out front for
three laps. It only took David Grenlund two more laps to charge in front, butvisiting Jim
Robinson was right behind the new leader. Robinson quickly moved in front and won the
feature.Because of the rules Robinson won the race, but Grenlund was scored the
winner, for the co-win situation. Duane Lounsburg and his brother Chad were next and Jeff
Schultz was fourth, in this close race.
Jerry Giuliano moved in front for just one lap,but then Curt Thomazin stormed out front
and never looked back for another win.Mike VanHouten looked like a sure challenger, but
with just one lap to go, the only Yellow Book USA caution period came as Van Houten
spun, dashing any chance to take the front position. The green, white, checkered situation
brought Sonny Schoffen in the Glen Vernezze car right up to the leader, but Thomazin was
up to the call and won the feature over Schoffen, Chris Thomazin, Giuliano and John DeMay,
for a thrilling mini modified event.
It took Jason Spittle just three laps to get to the front after starting sixth row inside
pulling off some slick moves to get there.Pete Koenig led those first few laps, then held
second for four more laps before Steve Doherty the fast timer took over that position,
which he held to the finish.Spittle took the win, with Bob Koch third, Matt Booker fourth
and Kevin Hill claiming fifth, in the BIC main.
Carrie Dygon moved in front of the LGR late model feature with Brad Kossow a second
generation driver right with the leader.Paul Edmundson was third, Ralph Gentile and
Andy Evraets.Next.Kossow slipped in front on lap five, but the tight
formation caused the outside cars to bunch up and make contact. Evraets received the most
damage as the caution appeared. With some quick repairs Evraets was back at the next green.
Two more laps were recorded before Kossow, Gentile and Keith Tolf made contact and all
were sent to the back. James Swan was running fourth and he became the new leader and went
on to win the race, despite a late caution on lap twenty. The five lap dash was a race for
third between Ken Johnson and defending champion Brian Ulrich. Fast qualifier Josh Wallace
easily claimed second, with Tolf recovering for fifth and Evraets right there in sixth.
The legends and bandoleros return after a week off and the return of the super mini cups
and rascal outlaws, plus BICS,weapons and mini modifieds. Just two more weekly Friday
nights remain on the schedule.
Time trials begin at 6pm. with racing at 7:30 sharp.
