April 16, 2005; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was another beautiful night
for race fans as the temperature reached into the mid 70s at Lake Geneva
Raceway,Saturday night. Brian Ulrich, out of Racine, the 2004 defending millennium late
model champion won the 50 lap feature for the limited late model race cars, that ran under
the Big 8 series rules, with the exception that all cars had to use a MSD chip. The cars
were so close that everyone finished within a quarter lap spread, as Ulrich went home with
the $500 for the win. Hopefully these cars will be back in a Big 8 series show at the
Budlight fall class on October 1st. and 2nd.This is the wave of the future,
stated Kevin Dawson the LGR Promoter. We used these rules at last years fall
classic and it was an excellent show, Dawson added. This Big 8 series is an
excellent opportunity for the tracks to get together with a clear set of rules,
Dawson said after the race.
Point leader Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake won his second feature
of the season in the rain shortened 24 lap feature, as rain hit the area about 9:20 pm.
The super late model event was declared complete as over half the race was over.17 year
old Josh Wallace of Pell Lake, Jamies son, won his first feature of his short career
in the super stocks for 30 laps. The sportsman feature for 30 laps was won by defending
champion, Jeremy Bloomberg of Hampshire ,Illinois.
Josh Wallace doing double duty, crept in front of the limited late model feature with Don
Gaserude, Mike Lloyd, Chad Stevens and Nick Wendt all over the leader. Lloyd and Gaserude
tussled for that second spot until the first Yellow Book USA caution period came on lap 8,
when Jerry Gleason spun. On the restart everything went wrong, as Gaserude got turned,
Stevens was involved, along with a lot of cars trying to get out of this mess.
By the time everything with cleaned up, Gaserudes night was over, with everyone else
returning before the end of the race. Underway, the one two turns were completed before
Carrie Dygon got turned, then backing into the wall with everyone bearing down. Dygon
escaped injury, but her night was over. Finally back to action with Wallace leading three
more laps before Wendt slipped under him and there was a new leader. Now last years fling
winner Jeff Steenbergen was right on Wallaces back end, then two laps later
second place changed.
Things remained the same with these equal cars from lap eleven until lap thirty three, as
no one gave an inched, but Brian Ulrich looked like he was on a rail, moving from sixth to
first in ten laps. The race ended under a blanket except for Ulrich who was in command of
the event. Steenbergen held on to second with fast qualifier Sonny Schoffen at his side
for third.Keith Tolf was fourth, Wallace fifth and Andy Wendt the 2004 Columbus Speedway
champion sixth.
Last weeks feature winner Adam Regnier flew in front of the super stock feature with Adam
Mass in his first night out second. Dustin Holland having a real good night wanted that
position as the see/saw battle ensued. Josh Wallace moved into third on lap seven, with
some side by side racing farther back with quick timer Tom Roney and point leader Mike
Gunderson trying to move up. In front entering lap eleven, Mass inched along side Regnier
and into the lead three laps later, on the fourteenth go round.
The only caution came on lap fifteen, this made things even closer, as Mass now had
Wallace to contend with. John Maki Jr.Regnier and Gunderson were in a three way duel for
that third spot. Right behind this threesome, Roney and Scotty Norton were glued together.
The last five laps were too close to call as the leader was the only one looking
like he would finish in that position. With the white flag out unless something would
happen Wallace would be the winner and Mass was second at his quarter, Gunderson nipped
Maki for third, Roney got by Regnier at the wire in another close race.
Sportsman competition was at its best as Rob Braun paced the field with Rick Rowlett
holding onto second one lap, before John Fischer and Jamie Dorsey made their way by. It
was tight farther back, as Jeremy Bloomberg, point leader Kenny Joosten, Adam Berge made
their way forward. On lap twelve Bloomberg caught and passed Braun, as Joosten could feel
the presence of James Swan his team mate who was now fourth on lap seventeen Fischer and
Dorsey made contact and the caution flew.
On the restart Bloomberg marched in front, with Swan getting past Joosten, but that was
short lived as second changed again. Another caution came on lap twenty one when Berge
caused a slowdown. Bloomberg won the event after that final restart with Joosten second,
Swan third, Kenny Smart, Erik Pierce and Braun very close.
As the super late models made their way to the track rain fell briefly, but hot laps, then
a start went off with no delays. Mike Simon Jr. darted out front with Terry Patnode, Russ
Blakeley, Ron Stoehr and Jamie Wallace in a cluster. On lap four
Blakeley and Patnode made contact and the first caution period began. When the green flag
was displayed again, Simon slipped back in front with Wallace and now Matt Kocourek
putting on the pressure. On lap ten Wallace scooted in front with
Eddie May joining the fray.
The next slowdown came on lap thirteen when Vincent Merry spun mid pack. everyone missed
him, but this set up another barn burner restart. Then something happened and cars went
everywhere, as someone dumped gear lube all over turn one. When the dust cleared, the
safety crew had their hands full with a big clean up. This caution set up a great race
ahead and when the green flag was thrown, Wallace was in front, with May and Kocourek in a
dead heat for second. After a three lap fight Kocourek came out ahead. Two laps later
Kocourek drew up on the leader. Then the last caution came as lap twenty five was to
start. Then came the rain, Wallace was ahead of the field with Kocourek was second, May
took third, with Rick Corso, Kent Burkoth and Don Collins sixth when the caution was
displayed. Race fans stayed to see if the big challenge would continue.
Officials waited for a few minutes and then all cars were sent into the pits to wait it
out. After ten minutes passed, the race was called and went into the books as a completed
event, with over half the race in the record books with Wallace, the
point leader picking up his second win of the season.
Next Saturday night junior fans will get to ride in the race cars. The Basic International
cars will join the other three divisions. Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. Racing starts at 7
sharp.
