July 16, 2005; Lake Geneva, WI. - The weather was very warm and the
good size crowd that came saw some great racing action at Lake Geneva Raceway, Saturday
night. The super late model feature was plagued by numerous Yellow Book USA caution
periods, as it took nearly 50 minutes to run the 40 lap feature event won by a surprised
Kent Burkoth of Pell Lake. The McHenry Limousine super stock feature for 25 laps
went to Adam Regnier of Twin Lakes, his fifth win of the season. Kenny Joosten of Wonder
Lake just missed a clean sweep in the Performance Unlimited sportsman cars,as the points
leader took fast time, second in the dash and won the 25 lap feature race and Kip Novotny
of Johnsburg, Illinois had a excellent night in the Rascal Outlaws visiting division,by
taking fast time, winning his heat and the 20 lap feature.
Vincent Merry shot off the outside pole starting position with Rob
Summers,
Michael Kruschke, John Baumeister and Jason Hicks working on the leader. The firstof nine
caution flags came on lap six, when Earl Counter stalled in turn one. Merry marched right
in front as the rstart began. Summers, Kruschke and now Jeff Holmgren Jr. were all
shuffling for a new spot, ust before Kruschke spun in turn four on lap eight. Holmgren was
now all over the leader on the next restart, with Summers and Hicks in a dead heat for
third.Holmgren moved in front on lap fourteen, just as Mike Gunderson in his debut in a
super late model spun. Two laps later Rick Corso and Brad Norgard tangled.
Then before a full lap could be made, Mike Meyerhofer spun.stopping the
action one more time. Each restart Holmgren would walk away from the field, as Hicks, Kent
Burkoth and now fast timer Jamie Wallace put on a show for second. Midway Burkoth slipped
into second, with the leader just in front of him. Lap twenty six Merry spun stopping the
race one more time. Then three laps later Kruschke and Joe Fischer made contact bringing
out yet another caution .During the final ten laps, two more slowdowns would ensue, each
time Homgren managed to stay in front for the win, despite numerous times Burkoth would
get inside. Burkoth had all he could do to stay ahead of Wallace who was fourth, Randy
Rodgers was fourth and Hicks fifth. A post race inspection dropped Holmgren from the
finish. Burkoth was credited with the win and Corso moved into fifth, as everyone moved
up.
The super stock feature got off to a rocky start, as Josh Wallace led the opening lap,
before Darryl Traber and Tom Jastrab got together for the first two caution periods for
the event again. Wallace led two laps before the final caution as fast qualifier Scott
Norton, Dave Edwards, Ken Eisbrenner, Traber and Willie Peterson met in turn three.
No one was injured but Norton and Edwards never answered the call for the restart. With
the next green shown Regnier had John Maki Jr. all over him, with Joe DeCubellis looking
for an opening. On lap fourteen after a lengthy battle, DeCubellis got by Maki.Right
behind these two Josh Wallace and Mike Gunderson were having a close race.Bob
Moeller in his first night out joined that fray with Regnier now comfortably in front. The
final four laps were awesome, as Regnier was some eight lengths in front of DeCubellis,
Gunderson nipped Wallace at the line and Moeller took fifth in a barn burning finish.
Midam driver Adam Berge moved in front of the sportsman feature until Gary Norton slipped
in front on lap number three. The race looked like a parade lap before the caution on lap
eight. On the restart Norton was still in command, with Berge feeling the pressure from
John Janssen,Adam Mass and Kenny Joosten. Berge got his second wind on lap thirteen,as the
top two were now in a see/saw battle for the front spot.Berge retook the lead on lap
sixteen,as Janssen was now second, Joosten third Janssen had just taken over the led when
Jeremy Bloomberg and Janssen made contact sending the leader
into a spin,as the final caution came out.Joosten became the new leader and won the race
just in front of Erik Pierce, Norton, Berge and Ken Smart.
The open wheel rascal outlaws feature brought Mark Findley in front of the race as the
greens were displayed, maintaining that spot until lap seven when Kip Notovny flew by and
easily won the event fourteen laps later. Chris Bedore was a distant second, with rookie
Jim Thiel third, Marc Adams next, followed by John LeSage.
This coming Saturday night,Five Star Race car bodies presents round two of the
no bull series for the late model race cars. There will be no increase in
admission prices.
