By Dale R. Erdmann

June 17, 2005;  Lake Geneva, WI. -  It was a excellent weather night Friday at Lake Geneva Raceway as the largest crowd so far this season came out to see over 100 race cars put on a great show. 17 year old Josh Wallace of Pell Lake did it again,as the points leader easily won the 25 lap late model feature for the 5th. straight week in a row. 15 year old Michael Cooter out of Machesney Park,Illinois the current INEX   bandolero points leader here won his fourth 15 lap feature.

16 year old Ernie Schaal from Wauconda,IL.made it two in a row by finishing the close Perfection Auto Body INEX legends 15 lap feature in front of the field.

The best race of the night was the Weapons feature. The final laps were this close battle between eventual winner Andy Krueger (#22) and David Donohue.

The BIC feature ran clockwise. Here, winner Steve Doherty (#49) prepares to pass Roger Schultz (#10).

Steve Doherty of Woodstock,IL. had fast time and won the turn right Double R towing Basic International cars 15 lap feature, run backwards on the quarter mile track to the delight of the crowd. Curt Thomazin of Elkhorn won his first Lusia’s pizzeria mini modified feature for 15 laps and points leader Andy Krueger of Lake Geneva won the 15 lap weapons feature on the last lap.

Before the program began late model fast qualifier Brian Ulrich talked to the track announcer about our good friend Dean
Sadowski who passed last Monday 13th.after a long bout with cancer. Our thoughts and prays go out to Dean’s wife Vickie, son Eric and step daughter Jenny.  Dean was a IMCA modified driver who raced a few specials here, but would come up any weekend he could to watch the weekly program. He will be missed by all of us who knew him.

Joe Rusciano charged in front of the late model field at the drop of the first green flag, with Carrie Dygon, Ralph Gentile and Paul Edmundson in hot pursuit. The first Yellow Book USA caution period came on lap three, when Rusciano lost power causing the field to go everywhere to avoid him. On the restart Dygon moved it front with Ken Johnson right behind her. Gentile got his second wind moving around Johnson one lap later. One more lap in the books and Johnson retired to the pits with handling problems. Dygon ran a decisive line as no one could get around or under her until Paul Dygon started his challenge on lap seven. Three laps later Paul Dygon took over the lead for just one lap before Keith Tolf snuck in front. For the next ten laps Tolf, Paul Dygon, Brian Ulrich, Sonny Schoffen and Josh Wallace would put on a show for that top spot. With five laps to go somehow Wallace out maneuvered that group and inched ahead for the win. Schoffen nipped Tolf for second, with Ulrich, Gentile and Paul Dygon under a blanket for the thrilling finish.

The bandolero feature got off to a four deep run for corner one, Kyle Palma and Collin Laursen won the sprint, as they raced side by side for the remainder of the lap before Palma took charge. Behind the leader Laursen, Branden Allen, Michael Cooter and Kyle Justis swapped positions quickly. Cooter and Allen moved into second looking like they were glued together. Somehow Cooter was able to shake Allen and raced along side Palma for two laps before moving in front. The only caution came on lap nine as Justis came too hard into four and was nearly collected on the wall, but some smooth driving only caused a hard hit bounce off the wall as the caution flew. Justis limped his bruised mount almost to the pits, with the chain off and a bent axle. On the restart Cooter held back the challenges of Allen. With two laps to go Laursen got along side Allen, as Cooter went on to win the event in fine fashion. The race was for second as these two raced side by side into four.
Both went too hard looking like they would collect each other ,Larsen pulled  off a slick move to take second,Allen at his side for third, with Palma fourth and Hope Bidlack fifth in another close feature.

The legends feature saw Don Schaal in front of the event, with Eric Lokemoen pulling off the move of the night to move from eighth to second all in one lap. As the top five shuffled for a spot, Ernie Schaal won the bid for second and within two laps the youngster over took his Father for the lead. The race was far from over even thou Michael Bilderback’s mount suffered from lack of power due to engine failure at the junior pro series event last Wednesday, his old power plant moved him into third along side Lokemoen.Curt Gnatzig joined them one lap later. Schaal ran a clean race, but behind him the race for second up for grabs, leaving the leader alone. The event went non stop as Schaal scored the win. A lapped car stopped the
race for second to end as a threesome. Lokemoen crossed the line ahead of Bilderback as Gnatzig got caught behind the slow car. Don Schaal ended up fifth in another barn burner.

The mini modified feature was another four deep start,as Jerry Giuliano won the race to the corner. John DeMay coasted to the pits with a blown clutch one lap later. Curt Thomazin scooted around the leader on lap two, with Mike VanHouten following his every move. Two lap later Bill Trusky moved into third, with quick timer Glen Vernezze right on his bumper. A few more laps were recorded, as Chris Thomazin joined the fray at the top. On lap ten Vernezze and Trusky made contact in a racing incident they would be talking about for weeks. The only caution of the event came out and Vernezze’s night was over one more time with a broken tie rod. The restart would begin a five lap dash for all the marbles, as Thomazin finished just in front of VanHouten, third went to Chris Thomazin, fourth was Giuliano and Trusky recovered for fifth.

Much to the surprise of the BIC drivers, the group would run right, which put the twenty cars on the small track running clock wise. Roger Schultz dove off the pole into the lead, with first nighter Tim Redden in second. The only caution came on lap
four, but on the restart Schultz walked the field, as Kevin Hill climbed into second. Hill would take the lead for one lap on the sixth go round, Schultz went back in front one lap later, but fastest qualifier Steve Doherty was already knocking on the door for the lead.On the ninth go round there was a new leader, who never looked back for another win.Schultz was second, with Jack Rabey next, Andy Portzen in his new mount was fourth and rookie Tom Homan a second generation driver next.

The weapons feature had guest driver Roger VanBergen and Reid Kahrs Jr. both wanting the lead. Each led a lap before first night driver David Donahue moved in front after a short battle. Andy Krueger the hometown favorite who had fast time moved up on Donahue. For the next nine laps it was an all out tussle for the lead.Krueger led most of the laps at the line, but during the tour of the oval, Donahue would have the lead. Coming down for the final lap with the white flag thrown, Donahue looked like he’d pull off a victory, but as they diced for that top spot, Donahue lost the run for the top, as Krueger came across the line first. Donahue was second with Mark Tomasi third, Kahrs hung for fourth and VanBergen fifth.

Next Friday night the Rascal Outlaws and Midwest sport trucks return. The Legend and bandolero cars are off. Time trials begin at 6pm. racing at 7:30 sharp.
