Rodgers, Moeller and Miller Score Feature Wins at
LGR! Johnson Clean Sweeps Mini-Mod Action!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
May 8, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. -. Weather has played a part in
the first four weeks of the season at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night.Well tonight was
no exception as there was a 80% chance of severe rain .Driver, officials and the fans saw
a completed program by 9:20pm.just 45 minutes before some 2 inches of rain and hail
arrived in Southeastern Wisconsin.
Randy Rodgers of Lake Geneva had a great night ,first winning the
Barkers reconditioning sponsored Al Schill Jr.memorial dash for 6 laps
and then went on to win the 35 lap Jim Olson Collision centers super late model feature.
Bob Moeller of McHenry, Illinois a former champion in the McHenry Limousine Super stocks,
won the 25 lap feature that saw a record two Yellow pages USA caution flags .Jeremy Miller
of Rockton,IL.won the Performance Unlimited Sportsman 25 lap feature. Last week Miller
bagged the 40 lap MSCS feature.
Greg Wilson of Kenosha in the Wilson's concrete school bus won the 10 lap feature in
school bus racing action.
Doctor ToothKen Johnson of Paddock Lake the defending champion had a clean
sweep in the Luisas Pizzeria mini modifieds,by taking fast time, winning the dash
for 4 laps and then the 20 lap feature race.
The Chucks Storage of Pell Lake super stock dash went to Norm Paulsen of Beach
Park,IL. There was no Richters Sentry Food stores dash for the sportsman cars.
The super late model feature was just one lap old when Vincent Merry spun
in turn four stopping the action. On the restart Joe Fischer who led the first lap darted
out front one more time. Rookies Earl Counter and Brad Norgardwere right with the
leader. Rick Corso quickly slipped into third, with Shane Bishop, Brandon Hill and Mike
Meyerhofer next.
Looking like a parade lap on lap ten, Fischer, Corso, Counter were so close, that one slip
up would be destructive for the whole field that timed less than one half second from
front to back. The next caution came on lap eleven when Mike Simon Jr. running twelfth
spun ,but everyone missed him.
That was the restart that helped Rodgers who before the caution was
running seventh. Picking up fourth position with the cone out when the green was displayed
Rodgers roared into third right behind Corso.
Three lap later Corso used the inside to try and get by Fischer, but the leader drove a
perfect line and stayed in front. Bishop was right along side Rodgers and the cluster of
race cars up front through twelfth were too close to call. Just behind these cars Counter
driving only in his third race was doing a great job with the pressure from Jerry Cowan
who broke through the traffic jam. Fran Prestay in the Jacob Humphrey mount, Jason Hicks
and Eddie May were all within the leader.
On lap twenty Fischer got just alittle wider than he wanted and Corso stuck his nose
deeper as the pair came off turn four. At the line Corso became the third leader of the
race. Rodgers followed the new leader with Fischer, Bishop and Counter next.
Things were setting up quite well as Rodgers inched along side the leader.
For the next three laps it was a see/saw battle for the top spot and then lap twenty eight
there was a new and final leader. Rodgers went on to win the feature, despite a final
Yellow pages USA caution on the white flag lap.
With the fan friendly rule that the field would go back to a green, white, checkered
situation Rodgers came home the victor two laps later.Corso held back numerous challenges
from Bishop who was third. Cowan nipped Matt Kocourek and Fischer
held onto sixth in one of the close field finshes to date, with no lapped cars and all but
two cars of the twenty car field stay running.
The super stock feature got off to a rocky start,on lap three with Ken Eisbrenner out
front John Maki in the Craig Mertes car spun while running fourth after contact.
Everyone missed his mount and out came the first caution. Under way the field was trying
to win the event on the next lap and a serious mellee turned out to be not as bad except
for Scott Norton who whopped the wall. The mess started as the field came out of turn four
with some four and close to five deep in front of the crowd.
Norton was in the second groove where everyone else wanted to be,causing his car to get
turned to the right after contact with Dave Edwards and many others.
When the dust cleared Norton somehow returned to the field after some quick repairs, but
his race car was considerably shorter. The race would will go non stop as the green came
out Eisbrenner slipped in front with Bob Moeller, Tom Fay and
Adam Mass in a group.
Moeller got under Eisbrenner, with Mass following two laps later, not
letting the leader out of sight. Because of those two cautions back of the field cars used
the cone restart to their advantage, as Rob Summers, John Janssen and Tom Fay all tussled
for the fourth position.
Moeller breezed to a healthy margin of victory, with Summers second, Mass third, Janssen
fourth, Joe DeCubellis fifth and Norm Paulsen rounding out the top six.
Bobby Giers came off the outside pole starting position into a comfortable lead right at
the off set, with Jamie Dorsey, Jeremy Bloomfield and Kenny Joosten waging a war for
second. Just behind this pack, Gary Norton and fast qualifier Jeremy Miller were extremely
close for fifth.
By lap eleven Giers was way out front as Joosten and Miller put on a great show for
second.Dorsey was right behind them watching for a mistake. But Norton was not going to
let up the pressure,as Bloombergs ill handling mount was sixth.Three laps later
Miller inched ahead of Joosten and had a long track to go before he would catch the
leader.
Four laps would be recorded before Miller would go past Giers as the leader went wide
coming off turn three. Miller cruised by and never looked back taking the win in the non
stop event. Giers was second,Joosten came across at his side in third, with Dorsey fourth,
Norton fifth, Erik Pierce nipping Bloomberg for sixth.
Second year racer Jesse Johnson moved in front of the mini modified feature with Hermie
Schultz moving in front on lap four. By lap six Mike VanHouten was moving around Johnson
and looking at the leader. Glen Vernezze was right behind them, with Ken Johnson third by
lap eight.
VanHouten caught the leader on lap nine and secured the lead two laps later. But Johnson
pulled off a slick move on lap twelve and Schultz fell to the defending champion one lap
later. A lapped car gave Johnson his big break as VanHouten
lost the lead on lap fourteen.
Johnson easily sailed to a big win in another non stop event .Vernezze was a close second
with VanHouten third,Hermie Schultz fourth, Phil Schultz fifth after problems early with
side by side traffic and Jesse Johnson sixth.
This coming weekend has three shows in three days starting off on Friday night as the
stadium motocross rescheduled season opener takes place at 8 pm. Then on Saturday night on
