Raceway Mourns Loss of Another Good Friend!
Rodgers, Rubach, Ulrich Collects LGR Titles!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
September 25, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was season championship time a Lake
Geneva Raceway. But before that took place most of the raceways drivers lined up on
thetrack. The point leaders each got a checkered flag, the last one in each division to
come out carried a black flag,a few carried an American flag. The reason for this display?
The raceway has again suffered a loss of one of its family members.
Charlie Doerr ,the track photographer since 1997, died unexpectedly on
Thursday September 23rd at his home in Watertown, at the age of only 59. This display
could not have been completed without the help the Doerrs friend Liz Bilderback, who
also is the bandolero rep, as nearly every driver brought their race car to the track on
Saturday night in memory of our good friend.
In the season championships, Randy Rodgers of Elkhorn won his
first title of
his career in the Jim Olson collision centers super late models. Jack Rubach of
Burlington became a two time champion in a very emotional tone, after losing
his good friend Mark TinyAmborn earlier this season. Amborn was also the crew
chief for Rubach. Brian Ulrich of Racine, a 20 year veteran won his first ever
championship in the S&P motorsports millennium late models.
Feature races were won by 2003 super late model champion Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake,
winning the 50 lap feature.Jack Rubach was able to clean sweep the super stock division,
by taking fast time , winning the Chucks storage dash and the 30 lap feature. Sonny
Schoffen of Crystal Lake,Illinois won his second millennium late model feature of the
season in the 25 lap event and Garrett Will of Batavia,IL. won his third Perfection auto
body legends 20 lap feature.
The Barkers reconditioning Al Schill Jr.memorial dash went to quick qualifier
Jerry Cowan. Paul Dygon of Wind Lake won the millennium dash and Larry Will of Batavia,IL.
won the legends dash.
Joe Fischer flew in front of the super late model feature, with Terry Patnode, Jerry Cowan
and Brandon Hill trying to move up. Drivers were lined up according to per average points
and appearances for the top sixteen qualifiers. Three Yellow Book USA caution periods
ensued the next three laps, one that even turned the leader. Patnode became the new leader
on the lap three restart, with Kent Burkoth, Cowan, Jeff Holmgren and Jamie Wallace in
side by side excitement. On lap nine Burkoth inched along side and in front for two laps.
Then Patnode charged back in front as it was tight at the top.
Chris Blawat spun on lap twenty eight, just after Jamie Wallace took
over the lead and out came another caution. Before one more lap could be completed Tim
Lynn Jr. spun causing a continuation of the last caution. Finally under green one more
time,Wallace walked away from the pack, until Homgren moved into second and closed in on
the leader. Eddie May was now third, with Patnode, Jason Hicks and Randy Rodgers in the
battle of the night for the championship. Only fifteen points separated these two, at the
start of the evening. If the race ended the way they were running, the championship would
have been a tie. But then the unthinkable happened just as the white flag was coming out.
Hick spun and the points race was over. Wallace went on to hold off Holmgren for the
win.May managed a third, with Patnode, Fran Prestay and Jacob Humphrey completing the top
six.
KenfarmerCalhoun paced the field in the super stock feature as Tom Fay and Tom
Jastrab fought for second. Mike Hansen in one of his best runs moved into second on lap
seven after a slick move that couldnt be duplicated. Scott Norton quickly followed,
with Tom Roney right behind them. On lap eleven Dave Edwards went around after contact
with John Janssen and the first of only two cautions would appear.
On the restart Norton slipped in front with Roney second, with
Calhoun third. On lap seventeen Roney got under the leader, but the lead did not change,
this happened the next four laps, until Bob Moeller grabbed second away from Roney in a
three wide fight for the lead. On lap twenty six Ken Eisbrenner broke something and the
final caution created a four lap dash for the win. At the drop of the green Jack Rubach
moved up on the leader and before the lap was over there was a new leader. It was easy as
Moeller and Mike Gunderson chased the eventual winner all the way to the checkered. Norton
claimed fourth, as Adam Regnier and a recovered Janssen rounded out the top six.
Paul Edmundson crept in front of the millennium late model field, as the green came
out.Josh Wallace, Carrie Dygon and Sonny Schoffen were next. On lap four the first of four
cautions would come out, for the tangling new comers Brian Konuplea and Mike Schmitz. Then
Wallace out ran Edmundson to the corner on the restart, with Schoffen now inside the
second place car. The next caution came when Keith Tolf, fresh from his run in the short
track nationals and fast timer Bill Hobson tangled.
On the restart Wallace led a lap before Schoffen flew in front on lap
ten. The next lap saw another slowdown as Carrie Dygon and Ralph Gentle got together.
Again Schoffen out ran everyone to the corner with Mark Hartland, Paul Dygon and Joe
Rusciano really close.
The next caution came on lap seventeen when Gentle, Schmitz and
Carrie Dygon tangled. As the green was displayed Wallace got a second wind and
nearly got by the leader. It was just too close near the front and on lap twenty five ended
when Wallace spun after contact with Hartline. This incident collected Brian Ulrich, as
Rusciano and Tolf who landed on top of him, slammed hard into the wall under the flag
stand. Everyone escaped injury, but there were lot of damage to a lot of race cars. Because
of the late hour and lengthy clean up, the 40 lap event was ended. Schoffen was declared
the winner, with Hobson, Paul Dygon, Konuplea, Schmitz and Gentle the next cars still
running.
The non stop legends main saw Robb Duffek lead two laps before Garrett Will moved in front
and never look back for the win. The race for second on back was excellent as defending
champion managed to hold back point leader and quick
qualifier Curt Gnatzig who was third.Rookie Ernie Schaal was next with Hermann Greinig
fifth and Larry Will nipping Michael Bilderback for sixth in a very good race.
Next weekend the small cars will hold season championships for the mini mods, Legends and
bandoleros.Six other divisions will race too, as Bilderback Auto parts Presents the Small
car world championships on October 1st. Time trials begin at 6pm. Racing at 7:30.over 150
cars are expected.
Then Saturday and Sunday the 2nd.and 3rd. The ODouls fall
classic come to the Midwest, with over 300 race cars. Time trials Begin at 2pm.racing at
6pm.Saturday and Sunday 1pm.
