Bringing Back The Memories With the Supers of the
70's! Heart Warming Clean Sweep for Rubach!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
September 4, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was back in the day at Lake
Geneva Raceway, Saturday night as the vintage modified stock cars made their first
appearance that raced modifieds three nights a week, from 1966 to the 1970s.Bill
Thompson in the late Billythe cat Johnson race car won the special 10 lap
feature for the visiting cars. Many former drivers came in tonight,as Jackat
tracksideBiddison called the races.Jacks famouswhos here from
Wisconsin and whos here from Illinois, saying had the third largest crowd of
the season go wild with excitement. The last weekly show was back in 1985 when the mods
were afternoon shows on Sundays.
In weekly action Fran Prestay of Waterford broke his winless
streak, by
winning the R.A. Adams enterprises of McHenry sponsored night. Prestay won the caution
flag plagued 35 lap feature for the Jim Olson super late models, asa season high 30 plus
supers were on hand.Jeremy Bloomberg of Hampshire,IL. couldnt be stopped as the
point leader won another 25 lap feature for the Performance Unlimited Midwest sportsman
cars and Jack Rubach of Burlington took fast time, won the 6 lap dash and the 25 lap
feature, that ran with only onecaution flag. This was Rubachs first feature win in
the McHenry Limousine super stocks, since his good friend and crew chief ,
MarkTinyAmborn passed.
Vincent Merry dropped in front of the super late model feature with Earl Counter, Brandon
Hill, Jacob Humphrey and Rick Corso right with the leader. First timer Michael Kruschke
spun on lap three bringing the race to its first halt, with a Yellow Book USA
caution period. With the next green Merry had Hill all over the leader, as Counter could
now feel Corso, with Kent Burkoth now fifth. Another slowdown came on lap nine, but on the
restart Merry marched right back in front. Now Corso was second, with Hill, Burkoth,
Counter and point leader Jason Hicks now in contention. The next ten laps produced a tight
field, but on lap fifteen Wayne Freimund tagged Jeff Way sending him around and yet
another caution flag appeared. Two laps later Kruschke spun again and one more caution
came out. Not even one more lap was completed, when Corso tagged Merry, who smucked
Burkoth sending him into hill at a high rate of speed. Burkoth escaped injury, but his
race car received considerable damage from the incident.
With the top three cars gone Fran Prestay was now the leader, but
Humphrey would shadow the new leader until Jerry Cowan slipped into second on lap twenty
three. Three laps later Jerry Mueller was having problems and ended up off the track
between turns one and two. That would be the final caution, as Prestay would win the race
over Jamie Wallace who nipped Cowan for second, Randy Rodgers was fourth and has now come
within ten points of Jason Hicks. Terry Patnode was fifth and Corso was sixth.
The super stock feature just got started as Dustin Holland and Tom Jastrab got together
causing the only caution of the race.Josh Wallace cruised out front ,with Adam Regnier
along side the leader and two laps later the lead would change. Shane Sapp remained
third, with Mike Gunderson next. From time to time Wallace would scoot to the inside and
take the lead, but not where it counts. Suddenly Jack Rubach got a few breaks and the
points lead was up to third by lap ten ,with Regnier way out front.Wallace and Rubach
diced for second place the next four laps before Rubach got by. The top eight were like a
parade lap, but no one could catch Regnier, until lap twenty one, when Rubach managed to
take over the front position, but then Regnier came right back for three laps, before Rubach
came home the victor. Regnier, Wallace, Gunderson, Adam Mass and Sapp rounded out the top
six.
Rick Rowlett darted out front of the sportsman feature with rookie Jack Clark, Jamie
Dorsey ,Adam Berge and Jeremy Bloomberg in a very tight formation. Then Clark led laps two
and three, before Erik Pierce slipped in front with Clark, then Bloomberg challenging the
leader. On lap ten Dorsey and Berge caused the only caution period of the event.Tim Schmitt
in his first appearance in two years was now up to second by lap eleven ,as the second and
third place cars diced for the runner up spot. On lap sixteen Gary Nortons mount
went flat, but everyone missed him and the caution came out.Bloomberg didnt let that
bother him, as the points leader scored another win, espite another caution with four to
go. Pierce was second, with Bobby Giers, a recovered Berge, Dorsey and fast timer Kenny
Jousten next.
The coming Saturday night the bandoleros make their first appearance of the season on this
night, the super late models, super stocks and mini modifieds will also race. There will
be school bus races too. Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. racing
at 7pm. The final night of racing is October 2nd.
