Points Leader Gnatzig Scores First Legends Feature
Win!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
September 3, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. -The final weekly Friday night race
program at Lake Geneva Raceway brought out another large field of race cars and one of the
biggest crowds of the season. Curt Gnatzig of Hartford took over the points lead a few
weeks ago,but until tonight the former champion had yet to win a feature race this season
in this highly
competitive division. What makes this win even more important, three weeks ago, Gnatzig
destroyed his own car and was able to convince Eric Lokemoen into using his race car until
his race car is back together. The win in the 15 lap feature came at the
wire that put the icing on the cake in the Perfection Auto Body legends division.
Other winners were Vincent Merry of Wadsworth,Illinois scoring
another clean sweep in the Vazcom Communications Midwest sport trucks. With just three laps
to go, Sonny Schoffen of Crystal Lake,IL. won his second S&P motorsports millennium
late model 25 lap feature of the season.Bob Koch of McHenry,IL. had to start the semi dead
last
and won it.Then start dead last in the feature race, take the lead on the 6th. lap and run
away with the Rolling services,Basic International 15 lap non stop feature.Doctor
ToothKen Johnson of Park Ridge,IL.took fast time and win the 15 lap feature for the
Lusias pizzeria mini modifieds.Jeff Meyers of Elgin,IL. took fast time and at the
line won the Central states regional super mini cup 12 lap feature .Kip Novotny of
Johnsburg,IL. won his second Rascal Outlaw 20 lap feature of the season and
Michael Bilderback of South Beloit,IL. just missed a clean sweep by winning the heat
race and scoring the win in the first 15 lap feature for the Bandana Bandito
Bandolero race cars.
Josh Wallace moved in front of the pack in the millennium late model feature at the drop
of the green flag, with Sonny Schoffen, Mark Hartline, Brad Kossow and Joe Rusciano in hot
pursuit. For the next seven laps it was a see/saw battle for the top spot between Wallace
and Schoffen, with no clear competitor domimating the position. On lap eight Hartline was
able to get under Schoffen, but the rookie driver Wallace would not be taken, as he crossed
the line less than a foot ahead of his challengers. From laps eleven to twenty one the
race for second was just too close to call, as Schoffen and Hartland put on a show.Right
behind them, Kossow had Rusciano, then Keith Tolf trying to get by. On lap sixteen Kossow
got out of his groove and Tolf, Rusciano and fast qualifier Brian Ulrich got by. The final
five laps were tight racing, as Wallace had Schoffen and Tolf right there on lap
twenty.Schoffen managed to get under Wallace two lap later, just before Paul Edmundson
spun in turn four for the only Yellow Book USA caution period. The three lap dash saw
Wallace head to the pits with problems, as Schoffen held back numerous challenges for the
win, just ahead of Ulrich, Tolf, Rusciano, Hartline and Bill Hobson at his side.
The legends feature looked like a repeat of last week,as Ernie Schaal moved in front of
the field from his second row starting berth. Quickly third row starter Michael Bilderback
moved into second right on the leaders back side. Then lap three
Hermann Greinig and Bilderback diced for that second position, before Nick Shutkas moved
into third on lap ten after a good race for the change. Lap eleven Curt Gnatzig just
passed Bilderback before Greinig and Shutkas tangled stopping the
action for the first time. This tightened the field up even closer than before and when
the green came back out Schaal could feel the heat. Now Steve Licht and Bilderback joined
the fray up front and until the checkered it was just so close
at the top. Coming off turn three Schaal was the leader, drawing near the fourth turn, it
was a dead heat, then coming across the line Gnatzig pulled off the victory as the crowd
went to their feet for this barn burner. Then under a blanket were
Schaal,Licht,Bilderback,Robb Duffek and another rookie Tom Palma Jr. for excellent finish.
The Rascal Outlaw feature was intense speed as fast timer Jeff LeSage had another short
night, ending up on the infield with front end damage during the second lap racing
incident with his brother Jeff LeSage. Pole sitter Steve Kreft led the first two laps
before John Benkert moved by pulling off a slick move for the position. Behind the new
leader everyone was shuffling for a new position, with Kip Novotny on the move, along with
Keith Christopherson, John LeSage and Butch Torkelson. By lap ten Novotny caught the
leader and after a short battle, there was a new leader, who went on to win the race,
despite a caution on lap thirteen for a spin by Marc Adams. Jeff LeSage was second, with
Benkert, Mark Findley, Christopherson
and former sport truck driver Dave Shine next.
The mini modified feature saw Gerardo Giuliano in front for the first two laps, even with
a spin by Hermie Schultz and a caution flag on lap one. That was all best timer Ken
Johnson needed and on lap three there was a new leader.Phil Schultz chased Johnson the
entire race, but again the defending champion was too much for his fellow drivers and
scored back to back wins over Schultz, Mike VanHouten, Glen Vernezze, Curt Thomazin and
Andy Krueger.
Dwight Dunlap moved in front of the bandolero feature with a scramble for position behind
him.Michael Bliderback slipped in front on lap three, with quick qualifier Michael Cooter
not letting the leader out of his sight, as he secured second two laps later.
Cooters challenge was short lived after he spun in turn four, bringing out the only
caution of the event. On the restart Kyle LaPier who now ranks third in the nation for
INEX points, crept up on the leader, then three laps later Cooter was back in the hunt
with just five laps to go. Bilderback went on to win his seventh feature of the season,
with LaPier right behind him,Cooter along side, as Kyle Jusits, Steve Erickson and Dunlap
completing the top six.
The next Friday night event will be on the 17th.as the first ever tournament of
destruction takes place at 7pm. There will be a combine demo derby, school bus race
and demo, monster truck motorhome crushing, train racing, spin 2 win, roll over contest,
at least two trailer races of doom and a whole lot more.
