14 Year Old Dillon Oliver Wins Regional Legends
Qualfier!
By Dale R. Erdmann and Natasha Fabian |
August 14, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - One of the largest crowds of the
season came out to see the Speedway Auto Mall legends regional qualifier events as 14 year
old Dillon Oliver of Bowling Green,Kentucky won last night in another regional eventand
took home $1000. Tonight the second year driver took fast time, won the 40 lap feature and
walked away with $1000 for his efforts, at Lake Geneva Raceway, Saturday. Many in the
crowd had never seen the legend cars before, other than on TV. The youngster was given a
big hand by the race fans, when he told them, he was only that old and that he won the
previous night. That part of the show was originally scheduled for July 3rd.but
cancelled due to rain.
The scheduled Quality Tire/American car care centers portion of
the program was a Midwest Sportsman championship series program as Jeremy Bloomberg of
Hampshire, Illinois won the 40 lap feature. Bloomberg is the current LGR point leader and
won last Saturdays feature. The Jim Olson Collision centers super late model 35 lap
feature went to Randy Rodgers of Elkhorn in his third feature of the season and has now
come within 70 points of the point standings top spot. Scott Norton a second generation
driver from Wonder Lake,IL. a rookie driver won his first McHenry Limousine
super stock non stop 25 lap event. This was also the first Saturday night appearance of
the Bandana Bandito bandolero cars and 16 year old Michael Cooter of Loves Park,IL. won
his first feature of the season.
BLOOMBERG WINS MSCS
ROUND 5 AT LGR
Lake Geneva, WI (August 14) - Jeremy Bloomberg knows
his way around the third-mile Lake Geneva Raceway, and the track's current point leader
proved it again by winning the Midwest Sportsman Championship Series race Saturday night.
Bloomberg started the race from the twelfth spot on the grid, working his way up to second
by lap fifteen, and taking the lead over from George Schultz on lap 23 to win the race.
The run was far from an easy stroll through traffic, as four of the five caution periods
were in the first ten laps of the scheduled forty. Adam Berge took the initial lead from
the pole, but Jamie Dorsey was allowed several chances to take it, once after Kenny Smart
pulled into the infield with a fire in his car, and again after George Prentice, in his
first night out of the '04 season spun solo in turn three. Erik Pierce grabbed the lead on
lap five, but it wasn't long before hot shoe Schultz relieved Pierce of the position.
Local favorite James Swan and Josh Bauer tangled on lap seven, ending Bauer's night.
Racing resumed until lap ten, when Jack Clark spun solo. The field realigned with Schultz
leading, Kenny Joosten second, Pierce third, Jeff Steenbergen fourth, and Bloomberg fifth.
The run continued until Berge, Colin Bamke, and the lapped car of Smart made contact in
turn four on lap 27 - Berge showing the worst damage. At the restart it was Bloomberg on
the point, Johnny Senerchia and Schultz doubled up behind him to make the 13-lap dash to
the finish. Jeremy Miller and fast-time qualifier Bobby Giers made the charge to finish
third and fourth, respectively. Josh Bauer had turned a qualifying lap worthy of a new
track record by two-tenths of a second, but was found to be one-half inch too wide in the
post-qualifying tech inspection.

Local driver Clayton Kruse moved off his outside pole starting position and grabbed the
lead of the legends feature at the sight of the double greens. Rob Duffek was second with
Al Renner third, Gary LaMonte in the Curt Gnatzig car next. The field remained tight as
lap six passed, with Renner now second, but from near rear of the pack Craig Haack was
already up front. Then one lap later Haacks quest for the win was done, as his
driver shaft broke and his long ride here from Lewisburg, Tennessee was over.
Jesse Smith moved into second on lap thirteen with Kruse feeling the pressure, as now
Keeton Hanks was along side the runner up. Somehow Hanks was able to pull off a slick move
as Smith and Kruse fell to the new leader on lap fifteen. Midway Dillon Oliver was now
fourth with Eric Lokemoen third. Two Yellow Book USA caution periods came on lap twenty
five and twenty seven, when second place Smith and fourth place Lokemoen dropped out with
problems.
On the restart Hanks crept away from the field but now Dillon Oliver was second with
Rockford point leader Nick Shutkas third, LaMontefourth, Kruse and Lyle Kuklinski were
next, there were no lapped cars with everyone still close, with just ten
laps to go. The final caution came on lap thirty three when Steve Licht and Renner got
together in turn two. It would be an all out dash for the final laps, with Hanks having
Oliver at his side until lap thirty six, when the lead changed for the final time.
Oliver was just ahead of his friend Hanks, who had Shutkas tailing him, with Mark Whitley
nipping LaMonte at the line and Kruse sixth. Seventeen of the starting twenty two were
still running at the checkered, with only one car lapped after being in the pits for two
laps ,in this exciting race.
Kyle LaPier blew passed Bobby Yonkee and Kyle Jusits at the start of the Bandolero main
event, as he went right up the middle of the pole sitters, gaining the lead before
reaching turn two. Quickly Michael Cooter shot into second with point leader Michael
Bilderback, just ahead of Yonkee. Dwight Dunlap who did not time in,started dead last and
was now fifth,as the leader went around after getting to deep into the corner. Cooter was
now the leader, as the race never went had a caution flag appear.
Dunlap challenged the leader, but went too hard into the corner spinning around, as LaPier
and others spinning to avoid, for the only caution of the event. Cooter tried to walk the
pack on the next green, but Yonkee was right there. Bilderback was having problems,as he
slowed off the pace, with LaPier moving by. with just two laps to go Yonkee tried
everything to hold back LaPier who regained second only to lose it in turn four again.
Cooter came home the winner, with Yonkee second,LaPier recovered for third, the ill running
car of Bilderback was next, with Jusits and Dunlap completed the top six in another close
race.
The super late model main saw Jerry Cowan slip in front at the drop of the green. Don
Collins,Randy Rodgers, Shane Bishop and Jason Hicks were next.Lap six it was a dead heat
for the lead, with Rodgers gaining the upper hand before the lap ended.
The first caution came on lap ten when fourth place runner Jacob Humphrey and Eddie May
got together stopping the action. On the restart the race for second would be the place to
watch as Hicks and Kent Burkoth waged an intense battle, before moving into second on lap
sixteen.
The next fifteen laps were non stop action with Rodgers winning the event the sure winner.
The race was for second, as Kent Burkoth finished ahead of Hicks, Cowan in his first night
back took fourth, May and fast timer Jeff Holmgren Jr. completed the top six.
The super stock feature would go non stop for 25 laps, as Adam Regnier outside pole sitter
crept in front of the twenty car field.Craig Mertes slipped into second, with Scott
Norton,Ken Eisbrenner and Adam Mass all over the leader. On lap two Norton gained
second, then from laps eight until the twenty third lap it was a side by side battle that
Regnier proved he could handle. Then coming down to the white flag, they diced back and
forth the final lap, before Norton came home the winner.Regnier was second, with fast
qualifier Jack Rubach third, Mertes fourth, Eisbrenner fifth and Mike Gunderson a close
sixth.
This coming Saturday night, the Jim Olson Collision centers presents the final leg of the
no bull series. The point leader is Jacob Humphrey. The super stocks and the BICs will also
be on the card.
