16 Year Old Josh Wallace Wins MLM Feature at LGR!!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
July 29, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was a near full moon night at
Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night for the family fun night race program.Third generation
driver, Josh Wallace, a 16 year old rookie from nearby Pell Lake, won his first 25 lap
S&P motorsports millennium late model feature that ran non stop. Butch Torkelson of
Antioch,IL. ran away and hid from the field as he easily won the 20 lap feature race for
the Rascal outlaws, after taking fast time.Michael Bilderback of South Beloit,IL. may have
not qualified, but the point leader started in the back of the heat, then won it and
started in the back of the feature and won the 10 lap event for the Bandana Bandito
bandolero cars. The Perfection Auto Body legends feature for 15 laps went to Garrett Will
of Batavia,IL.his win of the season.
The Rolling services Basic International cars,Bob Koch of
McHenry,IL. took a clean sweep of the action, by taking fast time, winning the dash and
the 15 lap feature that ran clock wise on the smaller oval and Doctor Tooth
Ken Johnson took advantage of a fellow competitors problems and won the 20 lap
Lusias pizzeria mini-modifieds feature.
Rod Brossart paced the field for the first three laps of the BIC feature, before Vladi
Vladimirov scooted in front until lap eight, when Bob Koch came in front and held
back the challenges of second place Lenny Adams, Dan Giannotti, Brit Bromann and Reid
Kahrs Jr. a in very close contest.
Ernie Schaal grabbed the lead of the legends feature and held the lead for two laps before
Garrett Will moved in front and never looked back.At one time the leader had eight car
advantage, but the great race behind the leader was too close to call, as Steve Licht the
defending champion, fast timer Curt Gnatzig, Michael Bilderback and Schaal diced for that
second spot. The rest of the field remained very tight, with five laps to go Bilderback
crept along Licht from time to time, but never secured the spot, as Licht wasnt
giving an inch to the challengers. Even once there was contact as the group came off turn
four and Licht got very wide. With one lap to go, Will had no problems winning the event,
Bilderback nipped Licht for second, with Gnatzig at the inside in fourth place. Schaal
claimed fifth and Larry Will completed the top six.
The mini modified feature was another intense battle for the top spot at the drop of The
green flag, when Curt Thomazin slipped in front, as a cluster of cars tried to over take
the leader. On lap three, the first Yellow Book USA caution period was seen after John
DeMay lost traction, then slipped right, then left and smacked the wall hard, coming to
rest in front of the field, that did everything to miss him.
DeMay escaped injury, but his car received some damage. On the restart Thomazin darted back
in front, with Jesse Johnson, Glen Vernezze and Andy Krueger all over each other for the
same spot. By lap eight Ken Johnson was in second some distrance behind the leader. Last
weeks feature winner Mike VanHouten spun in turn one on lap eleven and the second caution
was thrown. Thomazin march right out front, as Ken Johnson, Jesse Johnson and Krueger.
Until lap thirteen it looked like Thomazin would win the race, but something happened to
his car causing it to not handle. Holding the lead two more laps with his ill handling Car
gave Ken Johnson the opportunity to move in and take over the lead. Thomazin dropped out
two laps later, with Johnson breezing to a big lead and win over Vernezze, Krueger, Jesse
Johnson, Hermie Schultz and a recovering VanHouten.
The bandolero feature saw two new drivers along with the regulars as Jim Uteg Jr.moved in
front of the field with fast qualifier Kyle LaPier pulling off a slick move to gain
second, then the lead two laps later. Coming off turn four the leader drifted too
wide and Michael Bilderback inched ahead. Two laps later LaPier spun and out came the
caution. As the green reappeared Uteg tried to out run Bilderback into turn one. they
stayed side by side, before Bilderback climbed in front coming out of two. The race
remained close as Bilderback claimed the win, with a recovered LaPier nipping Uteg for
second. Kyle Jusits was fourth, with Jimmy Uteg III fifth and Bobby Yonkee sixth.
The millennium late model feature was another full field as rookie Ralph Gentile moved
from his row two starting spot and quickly secured the lead for just one lap before Josh
Wallace took over the lead. Brad Kossow who finished runner up last week was having
problems all night and dropped out on lap seven. Another rookie Ryan Walsh got under
Gentile for second but Monty Coffman was on the move, taking over the second spot on lap
nine.Point leader Brian Ulrich took three more laps to get by Walsh, but the field was too
close to call with ten laps to go.
From time to time Coffman would try to get by Wallace, but then Ulrich was right there
waiting for a mistake. Keith Tolf was now up to fourth by lap eighteen. From second to
tenth, the field would dice for a better position, there would be changes.
With five laps to go Ulrich secured second, as the veteran put on the pressure, but the
fifth week driver held his own and came home the winner, with Ulrich second, Coffman held
onto third, with fast timer Sonny Schoffen, Tolf and Bill Hobsin under a blanket for the
checkered in a extremely close race.
The rascal outlaws and the super mini cup cars join the bandolero, legends, sport trucks,
BIC cars and millennium late models. Time trials begin at 6pm.races at 7:30pm sharp. Only
five more nights remain on the 2004 schedule for the family fun night
