Merry Scores a Clean Sweep at LGR!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
July 16, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was another ideal night at Lake
Geneva Raceway, after rain fell around the area just before qualifying on Friday night.
3-time Vazcom Communications Midwest sport truck driver champion Vincent Merry out
of Wadsworth, Illinois served notice that he is now officially looking for another
championship, as he took fast time, won the dash and easily scored the win in the 15 lap
feature.
14 year old Kyle LaPier won his third Bandana Bandito bandolero
10 lap feature. The rough and tumble Perfection Auto body legends feature for 20 laps went
to Hermann Greinig from Addison,IL.,his first win of the season .Todd Miller of Oak Creek
won his third Rolling services Basic International cars 15 lap feature. Kip Novotny from
Johnsburg,IL.and Jeff Steenbergen of Waupun pulled off a last lap win in the S&P
motorsports millennium late model feature for 25 laps, that went non stop.
Brad Kossow paced the field in the millennium late model feature as the green flag was
first displayed.Monty Coffman, rookie Bill Hobson, Carrie Dygon and Joe Rusciano were glued
together for the next position. Coffman inched his way into
the lead on lap two, with Paul Dygon getting an early break, was now running third, but
following his every move was Jeff Steenbergen.
By lap eight fast timer Sonny Schoffen joined the fray,as the leader and Steenbergen were
in a very tight cluster.Keith Tolf moved past Paul Dygon and Kossow one lap later and what
a show this produced. On lap ten Coffman knew Steenbergen was there,as the challenger crept
to the outside of the leader. For next three laps it was all out excitement, then there was
a new leader. Once in front there was no time to breath,as Schoffen got by Coffman
one lap later.
For the next eleven laps it was a side by side show for the lead. On lap twenty three
Schoffen was ahead at the stripe, but then Steenbergen came right back in front. Coming
into turn four the pair went high on the track with Steenbergen nearly hitting the wall,
as contact was made. Under the flag stand with the white out, it was a dead heat. Then
Schoffen pulled ahead before turn one, coming into the turn Steenbergen moved inside and
then coming off two, contact was again made and Steenbergen pulled ahead for good and came
home the winner by inches over Tolf who nipped Schoffen, Coffman was fourth with Brian
Ulrich the current point leader fifth and Paul Dygon claimed sixth in one of the best
features of the season.
Steve Licht the defending champion, had problems qualifying, but it took the seasoned
driver just one lap to move in front from his second row starting spot.Once in front the
leader marched to a four length lead by lap two.Visiting Rich Lombardo was way off the
pace. On lap four the worse incident of the season took place. Joe Scala and Ernie Schaal
got together as they lapped the slowing car, collecting Michael Bilderback and then Rob
Duffek had no where to go and flew high into the air, then rolled his mount, as he went
over the side of the stopped cars. Duffek escaped injury, but his race car was extensively
damaged.
After a lengthy delay Licht flew back in front, with point leader Lyle Kuklinski, Larry
Will, Hermann Greinig and Curt Gnatzig a distance behind the leader. It took until the
white flag lap to catch the leader, as the foursome pounced on the leader
it was a mad dash for the top spot. Greinig came home the winner, Licht hung onto second,
Gnatzig was along side for third, with Kuklinski,Will and Nick Shutkas completing the top
six.
Hometown driver Rob Pollak scooted out front of the Rascal outlaws feature and held onto
the front spot until lap six when Dale Olson breezed in front. Kip Novotny caught the
leader on lap fourteen and the only Yellow book USA caution couldnt
stop the second win of the season for the 7th.year driver. Fast qualifier Butch Torkelson
had time run out for any serious challenge. Rookie Keith Christopherson was a close third,
Olson was fourth, with John Benkert and Mark Findley next.
Kyle LaPier darted in front of the bandolero feature with Michael Bilderback and Michael
Cooter right behind hi.A caution came on lap six and Bilderback out ran the former leader
to the corner. Then for the next lap and one half it was a side by
side battle for the lead.LaPier slipped back in front with just one lap to go and held
back the pressure of Bilderback who finished second. Cooter was third, Jason Halbrader and
Kyle Jusits rounded out the top five.
