Moeller and Bloomberg Bag Mid-Season Features!

By Natasha Fabian and Dale R. Erdmann

July 10, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. -  It was the warmest night of the season, Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway for the midseason championship races. Kent Burkoth of Pell Lake had taken off the last one and one half seasons but made his homecoming a real big one. The 1990 street stock champion, started racing late models in 1991and until now, it was a struggle for the local driver. But tonight Burkoth could do no wrong.

In the Jim Olson Collision centers super late models, Kent took fast time and won the 50 lap mid season championship race. In the S&P motorsports Millennium late models, subbing for Brian Ulrich, Burkoth took fast time and won the 35 lap feature race for one heck of a night. Bob Moeller out of McHenry, Illinois, the 1993 street stock champion, won the 30 lap feature for the McHenry Limousine feature race and Jeremy Bloomberg of Hampshire,IL. the current point leader won the 30 lap contest for the Performance Unlimited sportsman cars.

The “Al Schill Jr.” memorial dash, sponsored by Barker’s reconditioning, went to 17 year old Jacob Humphrey from Lake Geneva. The Chuck’s storage dash for the super stocks went to Sonny Schoffen from Crystal Lake,IL. in the John Janssen mount. The Richter’s Sentry Food stores dash for the sportsman went to Bloomberg and Jeff Steenbergen of Waupun won the millennium late model dash.

Vincent Merry flew in front of the super late models feature with Earl Counter, Kent Burkoth, Jeff Holmgren and Jeff Lorenz all over the leader. The race cars were lined up according to points and the fast qualifier Burkoth started second row outside taking the lead on lap three. Shuffling for a better position, Jacob Humphrey crept into fourth after a lengthy with Merry.

The race went all the way to lap twenty before the first Yellow Book USA caution period arrived, when Jerry Cowan, Eddie May, Don Collins and Joe Fischer got together. No one was injuried, but Cowan’s and Collins mount received extensive damage.

After a long delay, Burkoth who had a big advantage before the caution, paced the field again. Holmgren spun in turn four on lap thirty seven bringing the race to a halt one more time. Again Burkoth’s big lead was gone. On the restart Fran Prestay, Rick Corso and Humphrey were putting the pressure on the leader. Counter tagged Humphrey on lap thirty nine, sending him around. Two more cautions came, ne on lap forty three and then forty five. Each time Prestay got under the leader, but Burkoth came right back in front.

Burkoth went on to win his first feature with Prestay second, Corso held onto third with point leader Jason Hicks fourth, Jeff Lorenz back for the first time since his bad wreck five weeks ago, was next and Brandon Hill sixth.

Mike Bell paced the filed in the super stock feature, with Ken”farmer”Calhoun, Tom Fay, Scott Norton, Kyle Prestay and Norm Paulsen next. On lap four Prestay received the black flag for a fluid leak, but the race continued. By lap twelve Paulsen
was up along side the leader and three laps later, there was a new leader. One lap later rookie Brent Mason and Adam Regnier made contact. Mason bounced off the wall and his mount started on fire. The driver escaped injury, but there was extensive damage to his race car.

Two laps later, first nighter AJ Dunne and Prestay tangled and another slowdown ensued. Each time Paulsen held onto the front spot. Mike Gunderson running midpack received the black flag for leaking water. On lap twenty one Adam Mass challenged the leader,as the last caution really tightened things up. Three laps later Mass received the black flag for an oil leak.

Time ran out for Bob Moeller, as Paulsen won the feature. Shane Sapp was third, Sonny Schoffen fourth, Daryl Traber came from the semi for fifth and Jack Rubach the point leader and fast timer sixth. A post race inspection dropped Paulsen from the finish and Moeller was declared the winner. Bell moved into sixth.

Kenny Joosten the fast qualifier moved out front of the millennium feature with rookie Ralph Gentile, Brad Kossow and Keith Tolf next. Rookie Bill Hobson spun on lap six and out came the caution. On the restart Jeff Steenbergen took just three laps to move in front, this was short lived, as Kent Burkoth charged in front and never looked back, taking the win in front of Steenbergen, Paul Dygon, Tolf, a recovering Hobson and Joe Rusciano in a good race finish.

Fast qualifier Kenny Joosten’s night in the sportsman wasn’t what he had hoped for, as Rick Rowlett and Gary Norton collected him, causing damage to The front end of the mount, even before the green came out. Randy Schneider moved in front, with Rowlett and Erik Pierce next.

By lap four, it was side by side for the lead, with Rowlett and Schneider in a near dead heat. Then on lap eight everyone got out of wack, with Bobby Giers and Jamie Dorsey now up front in another dead heat for the top spot.Giers moved in front, but Adam Berge and Norton got together one lap later, causing Norton’s tire to go down and another slowdown. Two laps later there was another caution and as Wally Morgan spun.J eremy Bloomberg moved in front, but Giers wasn’t giving up yet.

Rookie Jack Clark spun with ten laps to go, but again Bloomberg would stay in front, as Giers tried everything to regain the top spot. With just two laps to go, Rowlett ppun, causing a green, white checkered battle of the stars. Blooberg held on for the win, Giers along side for second, Dorsey third, a recovered Joosten fourth, Pierce fifth and Norton sixth.

This coming Saturday night, RA Adams enterpirises of McHenry,IL. presents  the second trailer race of the season. The super late models, super stocks and sportsman will have some bonus money for first and second in the feature and a random bonus spot to be announced later.
