By Natasha Fabian and Dale R. Erdmann

July 2, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was another prefect night for weather at Lake Geneva Raceway,Friday night. With 78 race cars timed in, it would be an exciting night of racing ahead.Sonny Schoffen out of Crystal Lake, Illinois, the 2003 super stock champion, has now raced in all but two divisions of race cars here.

Photo Highlights

Tonight Schoffen got into “Doctor Tooth” Ken Johnson’s car and took fast time, won the dash and survived the out of control 15 lap feature, to take a clean sweep of  mini modified competition. Jeff Myers won his third super mini cup 15 lap feature, of the season. Vincent Merry of Wadsworth,IL. ran away with the Vazcom communications Midwest sport truck feature action. The Rolling services Basic International feature ran clockwise on the small track and Todd Miller of Oak Creek won the 15 lap feature. Brian Ulrich of Racine had a excellent night, by taking fast time and on the last lap at the wire he scored his first feature victory of the season, in the S&P motorsports 25 lap millennium late model feature.

The mini modified feature didn’t even have three quarters of a lap in, when a three deep situation turned ugly. Mike VanHouten, Gerardo Giuliano, Bill Trusky and Curt Thomazin got together, causing the first Yellow Book USA caution period. No one was injuried, but for those four the evening was over.

Phil Schultz led the first lap,but Glen Vernezze was the driver getting the breaks and flew into the lead on lap two,in a race that would now go non stop. But just eight lap later, Sonny Schoffen was a driver on a mission, securing the top spot and went on to win the race over Vernezze, Schultz, Chris Thomazin, John DeMay and Hermie Schultz.

The millennium late model feature started off with recent Union Grove High School graduate Brad Kossow out front, right there were Bill Hobson, Curt Thompson and Ryan Walsh in a very tight cluster. Hobson managed to creep in front on lap four, but Kossow wasn’t giving  up,leading parts of the next twelve laps,as the field remained side by side.

Right behind this group, Mike Held, Jeff Steenbergen and point leader Mark Hartline started to move up. Steenbergen made the most those next ten laps, grabbing the lead on lap fifteen. On lap nineteen Thompson and Held tangled in the heat of battle, bringing this close event to a stop.

On the restart Steenbergen charged right back in front, with Hobson, Hartline, Brian Ulrich and Keith Tolf in a formation to close to call.  With five laps to go, it looked like the race would end that way, but just as the white flag was displayed Hobson spun just before the start finish line, with everyone missing him and out came the caution.

This set up a green, white, checkered situation that would turn things around. Coming off turn four Ulrich got inside Steenbergen, it was a dead heat in turns one and two, coming down the back straightaway Ulrich inched ahead by about one foot. Then into three Steenbergen held a small advantage, coming off four Ulrich gained some four inches as the drag race to the wire ensued, Ulrich won by inches, Steenbergen was second, with Tolf next, Hartline fourth, Paul Dygon fifth and Joe Rusciano sixth in one close race.

Next Friday night two open wheel divisions will be here. The Formula Indy cars and and the Rascal Outlaws join the regular classes of cars. Time trials begin at 6pm. racing at 7:30 pm.
