Carrie Dygon Wins First Race,
LaPier Scores First Career Victory at LGR!
By Dale R. Erdmann |
June 25, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was another ideal weather
night and 7 divisions of race cars were in the pit area and the second best crowd ever,
were on hand for the family fun night action at Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night.
The big news for this evening, Carrie Dygon of Racine, won her first ever heat after
starting second row inside, then waged a hard fought up front run with Paul Edmundson.
Dygon is the only female competitor in the S&P motorsports millennium late model
division. The crowd went wild upon the win and many gave her a standing ovation, as Carrie
got out of race car in victory lane.
In feature action, 14 year old Kyle LaPier won his first career feature in the Bandana
Bandito bandolero cars. In the Vazcom Communications sport truck action, four time
champion Vincent Merry from Wadsworth, Illinois took a clean sweep, by taking fast time,
winning the dash and the 15 lap feature. Bob Koch of McHenry,IL. a former champion also
took a clean sweep of the Rolling Services, Basic International cars.
Lyle Kuklinski from New Berlin the current point leader won his
second 20 lap Perfection Auto Body legends feature race, leading from start to finish. Mark
Hartline out of Gilberts,IL. the point leader in the S&P motorsports millennium
latemodels won his third feature of the season and second in a row for this highly
competitive group. Butch Torkelson from Antioch,IL.may have missed qualifying, but 2003
champion started dead last and easily won his heat and the 20 lap feature. The Great Lakes
Allison legacy cars were represented by 5 states and Doug Della of Waukesha won the 20 lap
feature over fast timer, Matt Bryne the 14 year old driver from Lyons.
Bobby Yonkee and Michael Cooter dueled for the top spot the first two laps of the
Bandolero main event, before Kyle LaPier pulled a slick move to take over the top spot on
lap three.Quickly point leader and defending champion Michael Bilderback slipped into
second with the leader about eight lengths in front.Yonkee stayed glued to
Bilderbacks bumper until Cooter scooted around him on lap five.Yonkee wasnt
going to have any of that climbing back into third one lap late.
Bilderback gave it his all,but LaPier didnt faulter tonight and won the contest just
in front of Bilderback.Yonkee was third with Cooter fourth and Branden Allen the race may
have short on race cars, but the race turned into a close contest.
The Mihovilovich Construction sponsored the Rascal outlaws tonight and their feature got
off to a rocky start, but each time John Benkert forged in front, until lap four when Mark
Findley moved around the former leader. The first Yellow Book USA caution period slowed
down the field and on the restart, Butch Torkelson flew in front. But one lap later
Findley found what he was looking for and reclaimed the lead.
The next twelve laps were all out racing as it looked like Findley would come home the
winner, but with three laps to go lapped cars that didnt watch the starter messed up
the race and Torkelson took advantage of the situation and inched ahead
for the final laps and took the win.Findley was second, with Dale Olson third, Keith
Christopherson fourth, Benkert fifth and hometown driver Rob Pollack was next.
Rookie Ryan Walsh slipped in front of the millennium feature race, with another first year
driver Ralph Gentile next. Joe Rusciano and Keith Tolf tussled for third. On lap seven
Tolf brushed hard up on the wall, causing everyone to panic and out
came the caution flag. Tolf was not injured, but his night was over with unknown damage to
the mount.
Gentile grabbed the lead on the restart with Mark Hartline, Brad Kossow recent UG high
school graduate trying to hold onto third, but Paul Dygon was right behind him. Five laps
later Hartline drove around Gentile and into the lead. Lap fourteen Sonny Schoffen spun
stopping the race for the final time before the checkered.
The final green saw Hartline creep away from Paul Dygon, Brian Ulrich, Gentile and
Risciano. Before the conclusion, Ulrich got under Dygon who got loose coming off turn
two, with only three laps to go. Hartline picked up another win, with Ulrich,
Dygon, Gentile, Rusciano and Kossow in a close finish.
This Friday marks the beginning of the holiday weekend. The super mini cups are back, along
with the return of the Lusias pizzeria mini modifieds along with three other
divisions.
Time trials begin at 6pm. with the first race at 7:30 sharp. Moto cross
racing is on the East end of the grounds on a stadium dirt course at 8pm.
