Jamie Wallace Scores First SLM Win at LGR!
By Dale R. Erdmann and Dave Kamholtz |
June 12, 2004; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was an ideal night for stock
car racing,as the skies were finally clear at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night.Jamie
Wallace of nearby Pell Lake, the defending champion won his first Jim Olson Collision
centers super late model 33 lap feature of the season. John Janssen from Burlington won
his second straight McHenry Limousine super stock 30 lap feature.
Jeremy Bloomberg of Hampshire, Illinois the current Performance
unlimited point leader won the sportsman feature 25 lap event and Jeff Myers of Elgin ,IL.
won the central states region/super mini cups 15 lap for his second win of the season. It
was inadvertently stated that Myers won his second feature on Friday June 7th. It was
actually won by Mick Ellis of Schaumburg,IL. Ken Jones broke the two week old one lap
qualifying mark with a time of 20.280 seconds. Ron Adee dominated the one on one spectator
drags,in his 1996 Viper. Kenneth Burkoth in a Corvette was a distant second,in a field of
ten cars entered.
The super late model field was a season record number of cars as the large
semi went to Brad Norgard of Pell Lake. Second place was Steve Vaughn of Loves
Park,IL.both advanced to the feature. Denny Hiffman shot out front of the field as the
double greens were thrown. Rookie Mike Meyerhofer,Vincent Merry,Jeff Lorenz and Joe
Fischer were in a tight cluster all looking for second. On lap eight Earl Counter got
pushed out of the groove and went flying off the track, bringing out the first Yellow
pages USA caution period. On the restart the next lap wasnt even completed when
Hiffman stalled entering turn three as everyone shattered, another caution appeared.
Meyerhofer became the new leader when the green flew with Fischer all over him. Brandon
Hill picked the right lane on that last restart,as he moved into third with Merry, Jamie
Wallace the quick time qualifier and Eddie May side by side. The show was for second
as the race fans could see that many positions were too close to call. Steve Vaughn spun
on lap nineteen tightening up the field.
This was the thing Meyerhofer didnt want to see after moving to a
four car length lead. With the next green Hill surprised Fischer and got inside the leader
too. Five laps later Terry Patnode got turned around and another slowdown came. Each time
the green came out Meyerhofer walked out to a comfortable margin ahead of the group
behind him. This time Hill worked on the leader, but settled into second before Wallace
began his challenge for second two laps later. Another caution appeared on lap twenty nine
as Brad Norgard stalled.
This would give the large crowd a great six lap dash for the finale, as the cars came up
to speed, Meyerhofer slipped in front of Hill, who lost second before the lap would end to
Wallace as the laps were winding down. Entering turn four Meyerhofer who held a perfect
line, gave Wallace just enough room to challenge. This twosome ran along side each other
until lap thirty two when Wallace inched in front for the first time.
The white flag came out and things got real ugly, as Lorenz got midway into turn four
getting way too wide and then slammed into the wall hard, collecting many other cars.
When the dust settled everyone escaped injury, but Lorenz and Counter received the most
damage in this melee. The race was called due to the time limit and curfew nearing.
Wallace was the winner with Meyerhofer and Hill in their best run second and third, re
spectively. Fran Prestay in his second night out this season, was fourth, May fifth and
Jerry Cowan sixth in what could have been a barn burner finish if the incident would have
not happened.
The super stock feature was set at 30 laps due to the twenty three car starting field.
Mike Hansen darted in front of the pack with KenfarmerCalhoun at his side.
Both drivers diced for the first three laps, before Calhoun gained the lead. Trevor Mock,
Zac Deeringer in the Tom Fay mount, Scott Norton and Shane Sapp were next.
Shuffling for positions made the event look like a parade lap but Sapp got a break after
making a slick move, before taking the lead three laps later. On lap seven an official
spotted a belt on the track, four laps later everyone knew whos belt came off, as
fast timer Adam Mass had his race car go up in steam, retiring to the infield, but the
caution had to come because of the liquid on the surface.
On the re start Deeringer worked on Calhoun two laps before taking over
the position. Midway last weeks feature winner John Janssen was running fourth after
getting by Mock and Norton one lap earlier and by lap twenty Deeringer would surrender his
position, but there was a lot of space to make up with only five laps to go.
Then on lap twenty two, Sapp would see the last thing he would want to see, a caution flag
with the worse incident of the season. Coming off turn two into the straightaway Mike
Gunderson running fifth was collected by Calhoun, after the incident was done, Tom Roney
and Norton were involved in this mess. Everyone escaped injury but, Roney, Norton and
Gundersons night was over with extreme damage to their cars.
After a lengthy clean up and hauling all the cars to the pits, the line up set Sapp in
front,as the green came back out Sapp marched in front, but coming into turn four Sapp got
wide and Janssen went in front quickly. It wasnt a usual night for this feature as
Bob Moeller sixth lost a wheel and the final slowdown ensued.
Janssen held on for the win even Sapp who took second gave it his all. Jack Rubach was
third right along side of Sapp, with Dave Melahn fourth, Mock fifth and Dave Edwards sixth
in this record number of caution periods. Josh Matz who finished seventh and Hansen who
was eleventh were both penalized 25 points each. After the final cone came out, they
selected their lane but switched before the race started again.
The sportsman main event brought Lee Gibbs in front at the drop of the green. Rick Rowlett
was second with Jamie Dorsey, Erik Pierce, Jeremy Bloomberg and Adam Berge in a tight
formation. By lap four Dorsey had pulled off some great moves and there was a new leader
on lap five. Pierce, and Bloomberg followed the new leader as Gibbs faded to fourth
with Gary Norton and quick qualifier Ken Smart within striking distance.
Bloomberg secured second on lap twelve after a lengthy tussle with Pierce, setting his
sights on Dorsey who had built up a good size lead. On lap eighteen rookie Jack
Clarks mount started on fire and the red flag stopped the field. Clark escaped his
mount without injury as the safety crew put out the fire. On the restart Dorsey was able
to lead part of the next lap before Bloomberg crept by at the end of that lap and into the
lead. Lap twenty Gibbs spun all by himself and the final caution was seen. Bloomberg went
on to win the race with Dorsey coming back to score second after a great race with Pierce
who was credited with third. Kenny Joosten who got hung up in traffic was fourth, Smart
was fifth and Bobby Giers sixth.
The super mini cups was a chase for the front spot between Ken Jones the early
leader who came home in second and Jeff Myers the eventual winner of the feature. Eric
Gehrke was third right with the lead cars, Mick Ellis last winners feature winner
was fourth,J im Jump was fifth and Nick Krueger sixth in another good feature.
