Baumeister Scores First SLM Win!

September 6, 2003; Lake Geneva, WI. - The weather was ideal and the pit area was full as three divisions of race cars were on hand Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway. Second generation driver Billy Baumeister of Janesville won the 35 lap Budweiser super late model feature,in an exciting contest in which 27 laps were led by the winner. Mike Gunderson of Wind Lake won his third 25 lap McHenry Limousine super stock feature of the year and Dan Giannotti of Bristol took fast time, second in the dash and won the 15 lap non stop feature that ran on both tracks at the same time in the BIC cars.

The super late model main event saw pole sitters Mark Hartline and Billy Baumeister duel for the top spot. Hartline led the first two laps before Baumeister inched ahead for the next three laps. This see/saw battle continued with Baumeister leading laps seven, eight, fifteen and seventeen, when the solo caution appeared. Hartline led the other laps,with the field looking like a parade lap until the slowdown.

Vincent Merry was the cause of the slowdown after going off the track in turn four stirring up a lot of dust due to the unusual dry conditions. When the green flag was thrown it was back to the side by side fight for the lead and all the other positions behind them.Hartline scooted out front with Baumeister reclaiming the top spot one lap later. The next fifteen laps were a scorers nightmare but race fans were shown that everyone could actually race together, with Hartline leading laps twenty one,
twenty four,twenty five,twenty seven and twenty nine. Baumeister also did a excellent job leading the rest of the laps until there were five to go.

Nothing changed but with just two laps to go. Baumeister inched away from the field,this set up a real scramble for the cars behind these two. At the wire Baumeister was the winner, with Terry Patnode, Joe Fischer, Hartline, Jerry Cowan and Fran Prestay. The crowd gave everyone a big hand in a race that never had been seen before.

Before the super stock could even get started Tom Roney and Mike Bell got crossed up taking a gaggle of cars with them. When everything got cleaned up, Ken Eisbrenner led the first lap with Dave Edwards taking over the next go round.
Second place Eisbrenner gave way to Adam Regnier on lap three,with Brad Norgard, Dave Erickson in his first appearance in sometime right along side of him.

Regnier worked on Edwards taking over the lead on lap eight. After starting mid pack, Mike Gunderson was getting some breaks as the field remained tight. By lap eighteen Gunderson was second about ten lengths behind the leader. Edwards wasn’t giving an inch as he tried to get his second place back. Gunderson had put a big dent in the leaders advantage but on lap twenty two Regnier’s night was over as he came to a halt in front of the crowd with problems bringing out the first caution since the parade lap.

Gunderson was now the leader and went on to win the three lap dash, he could not shake Edwards who was second,Norgard was third, with Erickson fourth, Jack Rubach was right at his side in fifth and Eisbrenner sixth in this close contest. Going into nights action Rob Summers held a ten point lead over Sonny Schoffen. With Schoffen’s nineth place finish,fast time and winner of the dash,this changed the lead over to Schoffen by twenty five points.

Having the choice to use either track Eric Schoffen led the opening lap before Josh Matz took over.Dan Giannotti wasn’t here two weeks ago when the two track system was used,this time the old quarter was faster and the quick qualifier took
over the lead at mid point and easily won the race over Matz, Pete Koenig, Matt Booker, Josh Brisbois and Marty Bulter.

This coming Saturday night marks the beginning of championship races. The Performance unlimited sportsman title will go right down to the last night as one of these drivers Gary LaMonte,Jeremy Miller, Denny Norton Jr. and Jeremy
Bloomberg will be the champion. The super stocks and super late models will also race. There will be no increase in admission prices. Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. First race at 7 sharp.
