First MLM Career Win for Schoffen at LGR,
Bilderback Shatters 5 Year Old Qualifying Mark!

Dick Behrendt of Ingleside made a clean sweep of the Central states region
super mini cup division by taking fast time, winning his heat and every lap of the 15 lap
feature race. Lyle Kuklinski of New Berlin won his second Perfection Auto body legends
feature race for 20 laps. Mike VanHouten of Cary,IL. won the dash and was back up on top
of the Herb’s mini modified division by winning the 15 lap feature race.
2002 Burris circle tour go kart champion Michael Bilderback of South
Beloit,IL. had a great night by first breaking the five year old track qualifying record
for one lap,with a time of 19.839 seconds for the INEX bandolero cars.Then the youngster
came back to win his heat and the 10 lap feature race for a clean sweep of the class.. Tom
Ross made it two in a row by winning the 15 lap Midwest sport truck feature and Josh Matz
of Burlington won his first Anchor Towing Basic International 15 lap feature.
The non stop legends feature brought Eddie Mecum Jr. in front of the field at the drop of
the double green flags.Rob Duffek tried to hold onto second but Lyle Kuklinski was on a
mission tonight as he slipped into second on lap two.Then three laps later into the lead,
going on to win the event over point leader Steve Licht who waged a real battle with fast
timer Curt Gnatzig who finished third. Herman Greinig was fourth right along side that
cluster. Duffek and Mecum were next.
The mini modified feature got off to a rocky start as the group exited turn two someone
got out of control and Chris Marinello went head on into the wall in the melee for a
complete restart. Marinello escaped injury, but his race car was out for the remainder of
the contest. Last Saturday’s feature winner Jesse Johnson got caught up in the
incident and damaged a left rear axle, retiring to the pits for the evening. Glen Vernezze
charged out front with Bill Trusky,Ken Johnson the fast qualifier and Mike VanHouten next.
By lap seven Johnson was along side Vernezze,then in front for the lead. Somehow third
place VanHouten pulled off a slick move and shot inside Johnson and Vernezze coming off
turn two.The two fought for the lead until turn four when VanHouten secured the top spot
for good going on to win the race.Johnson was three lengths back in second, Vernezze was
just ahead of Curt Thomazin,Phil Schultz and Trusky.
Rookie Michael Kruschke moved in front of the millennium late model feature with Paul
Dygon, Brian Ulrich and Mark Hartline all over the front runner. By lap five Ulrich
managed to pull along side the leader, then one lap leader there was a new leader. But
then two more laps were record and Sonny Schoffen got a break and he charged into the lead
after a lengthy fight with Ulrich.
With the white flag out Carrie Dygon spun bringing out the first caution. This set up a
barn burner two lap dash as Schoffen won the event over Ulrich, Jacob Humphrey the 16 year
old point leader and quick qualifier was third nipping Kruschke at the wire. Mike Lange
streak of three feature wins ended as he placed fifth and Keith Tolf was sixth.
8 year old Bobby Yonkee the 2003 INEX IL. bandit champion got off the track in turn three
and first nighter Kyle LaPier spun at the same time to create a complete restart in the
bandolero division. After that incident it was all out non stop racing as LaPier charged
in front of the pack with Yonkee next. Michael Cooter inched his way into second two laps
later with Michael Bilderback right at his side. On lap six Bilderback pulled off the move
of the night diving inside and into the lead one lap later, then going on to win the
feature over LaPier who looks like stiff competition for the class. Cooter took third with
Yonkee,new comer second generation driver Steve Erickson Jr. and Brian Heberlin rounding
out the top six.
The Formula Indy racing association joins the INEX bandolero’s, legends, BIC’s,
mini-modifieds, trucks and the millennium late models for the season finale of weekly
racing.Time trials begin at 6pm. racing at 7:30 sharp. The Millennium late models
will have their season championship on Saturday night September 20th. along with the super
late models and super stocks the same night.
