Jesse Johnson First Career MM Win!
By Dale R. Erdmann and Natasha Fabian |
August 23, 2003; Lake Geneva, WI. - R.A.Adams Enterprises the
Midwest largest Trailer distributor located in McHenry, Illinois sponsored Saturday nights
race program at Lake Geneva Raceway.Rick Corso of McHenry,IL. won his third Budweiser
super late model 35 lap feature of the season. Sonny Schoffen of Crystal Lake,IL. was back
to true form, as he took fast time and won the 25 lap McHenry Limousine super stock
feature. Schoffen nearly took a clean sweep but finishing second in the dash spoiled those
plans. Jesse Johnson a 21 year old rookie driver from Elkhorn won his first career 15 lap
feature in a non points race for the Herbs mini modifieds and 61 year old Tom Ross
of North Brook,IL. won his second Midwest sport truck 15 lap feature of the season.
In front of an overflow crowd Joe Fischer and Fran Prestay fought
for the lead of the super late model feature.Fischer gained the lead with Prestay, Jerry
Freeman, Denny Hiffman and Terry Patnode in a hard charge to the front. Lap three brought
out the first caution. As the next green was displayed Fischer flew back in front with
Prestay and Freeman side by side for second. On lap six Freeman moved into but then it was
a back and forth race for that spot as Prestay got his second wind. Patnode crept up on
Freeman on lap ten, with last weeks feature winner Jeff Way right behind him.Todd Lehr
spun in turn two bringing the race to a halt.
Fischers big lead was gone but again he walked the field on the restart with Freeman
moving past Prestay, Way around Patnode and Wayne Freimund the quick timer next. On lap
sixteen Way spun halting the race again. Then as the race resumed Shane Bishop spun
collecting Mike Simon, with Rick Corso spinning to avoid.
On the restart things got wild as there was some three deep racing back in the field.
Fischer led the next three laps before Steve Mack spun in turn two, in turn three Freeman
went around with the race coming to a halt one more time. Underway Fischer led just one
more lap before receiving the black flag when he came down the second place car.
Wallace became the new leader but that was a short lived claim to fame as a right front
tire went down on the new leaders mount and then tangling with Prestay. This brought out
another caution with fifteen laps to go. On the restart Way, Lehr and
Jeff Menolascino got together so the delay went on. Patnode jumped in front on the restart
but Corso quickly moved in front one lap later. Then Vincent Merry spun in turn four and
another caution ensued. Corso charged in front on the restart and
never looked back easily winning the event, receiving $1000 for his efforts. Patnode was
second with Freimund next, a recovered Wallace fourth, finishing fifth after a
controversial turn four incident with Way, was Freeman and Brandon Hill in his best run to
date.
Denny Norton Jr. in the Ken Eisbrenner moved out front of the super stock feature. Doug
Peterson in the Norm Paulsen mount was second, but Tom Roney inched ahead of him one lap
later. Scott Eggebrecht tried to make it a three wide situation with Peterson and Mike
Bell. The caution flew when that didnt work and everyone was involved bringing the
race to a stop. Norton paced the field three more laps as Mike Gunderson and last weeks
feature winner Dan Huber raced three deep for the lead,a s Brad Norgard running seventh
spun with no caution needed as he pulled away before the race was stopped.
Gunderson came ahead of the field with Huber right on his bumper on lap seven. The lead
changed again on lap ten when Huber inched ahead of Gunderson. Sonny Schoffen became a
factor in this race moving from third on lap twelve, to second on lap fourteen and along
side then into the lead one lap later. For the next ten laps Huber, Gunderson and Jack
Rubach never let up on the leader.
Schoffen went on to win the feature over Huber,Gunderson who nipped Rubach
with Adam Regnier who started dead last after the lap three melee, fifth and Norton sixth
in another great race.
Next Saturday night Culvers of Elkhorn will sponsor the junior fan night Program.
Their will be a coin grab for children 12 and under. The sportsman cars are back for the
second last appearance of the season for a points show. The super late models and super
stocks will also race. For the first time this season one on one racing has been added to
the show. For the first time ever family front wheel vans will race in a special one on
one class and the normal one on ones cars will race separate. Time trials begin at 5:45
pm. with the first race at 7 sharp.
On Sunday night the Midwest stock car series break tradition and races
under the lights. This show has been on Labor day at 1pm. since the 1980s. Now there
