Corso Survives Enduring SLM Feature at LGR!

The super late model feature got off to a great start as Joe Fischer
darted in front. Denny Hiffman held onto second two laps before Dan Mecum in his first
time back in five weeks moved by.Rick Corso was fourth with Fran Prestay along him. By lap
seven Corso was the driver on the move taking over third after a lengthy battle with
Hiffman. Jason Hicks was right behind Corso as the first caution was displayed with
problems at midpack on lap ten. It took another caution before racing resumed for two
laps.
Curt Woodworth was going into turn three when there was contact with Hiffman sending him
around and another caution came out as Prestay got caught up in the incident.It took
forever to get another lap completed as Fischer wanted this win. Finally underway Corso
grabbed second one lap later with Mecum still not settling for that position. Hicks, Jerry
Freeman and Jerry Cowan were glued together right behind him.
Corso moved in front on lap fifteen as it stayed tight throughout the top ten. On lap
nineteen Wayne Friemund running midpack had something go wrong as cars went every- where
to avoid contact,another caution appeared. Friemund never returned when the race resumed
but Corso flew to a three car advantage at the get go. Everything was finally settling
down until lap lap thirty two, coming off turn four Billy Skinner Jr. and Mecum made
contact. Something caused the Mecum mount to erupt into a ball of flames, as it flew off
the track in turn one,where it came to rest. The safety crew had the fire controlled
and Mecum escaped without injury.
When the race finally resumed Corso held back the challenges of Freeman who captured
second, Fischer was third, Terry Patnode in his first feature of the season was fourth,
Hicks fifth and Hiffman sixth in this long contest.
The super stock feature brought Adam Mass in front of the field with rookie Shane Sapp
leading the second lap before Mass when back in front again.Mike Bell, Adam Regnie,r Jack
Rubach and Tom Roney were all over the top two during those first five laps. Roney gained
the most during those early laps moving in on Mass at lap six. A lap seven melee caused
damage to the Sonny Schoffen and Adam Regnier mount.as the race continued.
Schoffen got the black flag on lap nine because of the dangling rear trunk piece. The fast
time qualifier didn’t not see the black,but a lap eleven slowdown sent him to the
pits, two laps down during the first caution of the intense race.
On the restart Mass came right back in front with Bob Moeller slipping under Roney. One
lap later Norm Paulsen and John Janssen tangled and out came another caution. This
slowdown gave defending champion Rob Summers the break he needed.Moeller was now the
leader with Mass keeping Summers at bay for two more laps. Quickly Summers moved
in and past Moeller with five laps to go.
Summers had all he could do to stay in front as Moeller never gave up but did have to
settle for second a the finish. Rubach nipped Mass for third, with Gunderson fifth and
Roney sixth.in this exciting event.
Rookie Bob Hacker jumped in front of the sportsman feature with Jeremy Bloomberg, Jeremy
Miller and Denny Norton Jr. in a tight cluster. Bloomberg somehow got under Hacker one lap
later, but had a hard time staying there. Hacker led laps five and ten besides many
moments of other laps in a race to close to call.
The final half of the race was again wild as Bloomberg led laps twelve, thirteen and
sixteen but Hacker wasn’t going to give up. With the white flag out Hacker looked
like he may pull off his first win as they raced side by side, the black flag came
out for Hacker. Coming across the line Bloomberg was the winner, point leader and newly
wed Jeremy Miller was second, with Gary LaMonte the fast time qualifier third. James Swan
was fourth after problems during the early laps. Norton was fifth and Gary Norton sixth.
It was learned later than Hacker received the black flag for what starter Dave Rex Jr.
felt was using too much of the track.
This coming Saturday night,Jim Adams auto body, Radicom and Dahl Wagner heating and
cooling all of McHenry,IL. presents the annual Gauntlet race. Time trials begin at 5:45
and the first race at 7pm.
The super late models,super stocks and sportsman will be on hand.
