Cowan, Gunderson, Goodwin and Merry LGR Winners!

May 31, 2003; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was the last day of the month and weather was just like mid October as the bone chilled crowd that witnessed the Saturday night race program at Lake Geneva, sponsored by Steinbrinks, Pick and Save Stores in Lake Geneva and Delavan. Jerry ”the farmer” Cowan of Burlington won his second career feature in the Budweiser
Super late model feature race for 35 laps. Mike Gunderson a third year driver from Wind Lake won his first of the season McHenry Limousine super stock 25 lap feature. Jeff Goodwin of Kenosha survived numerous caution flags that plagued the event but won his first 25 lap S&P motorsports millennium late model feature and defending champion Vincent Merry of Wadsworth,Illinois won the 15 lap Midwest sport truck feature.

Vincent Merry (#55) came away with top honors in the Sport Truck feature contest.

Jerry Cowan shot off his outside pole starting berth to take the lead of the super late model feature for the first two laps. Quickly Don Collins scooted inside and forged his way out front for the next two laps before the first caution was thrown for point leader Jamie Wallace and Joe Fischer’s get together in turn four. Back to the action Cowan out ran Collins to turn one for the lead one more time. Collins faded slightly as Jason Hicks, Rick Corson and Jerry Freeman moved by.

There were numerous challenges for that top spot as Corso and Hicks would keep up the pressure. Wayne Freimund was now fifth with the event still looking like a parade lap throughout the field.Just past midway a lapped car helped Freeman get around Hicks was set his sights on the leader. This didn’t set well with Hicks as he and then Corso got by Freeman. Fast timer Erik Darnell was right on Freimund’s bumper but Billy Skinner Jr. want the same position as things got tighter. Another lapped car helped Skinner this time as he got by Darnell and Freimund on lap eighteen.

From time to time Hicks would get up along side Cowan then even take the lead for three laps .Just as the lead was being challenged out came the final caution for what could have gotten real ugly as two lapped cars trapped the lead cars when one went high and the other stayed low. On the restart it would be a ten lap dash as Cowan walked away from the field but Freeman wanted a piece of the action. There were numerous challenges until the checkered flag was thrown as Cowan crossed the land first, Freeman, Corso, Skinner Jr. Darnell and a recovering Wallace made the top six.

In the super stock feature Mike Bell climbed out front as Norm Paulsen and Tom Fay having an excellent race for second. On lap ten the caution came out for Aaron Willams after his driveshaft broke. Bell moved back in front after a mid pack brake check restart made everyone tense.Paulsen, Scott Eggebrecht, Tom Roney. Mike Gunderson and Rob Summers were next. On lap eighteen Fay and fast qualifier Sonny Schoffen tangled stopp ing the race for the final time. Paulsen received the black flag for an oil leak just before the restart as Bell could now feel the presence of Mike Gunderson and Eggebrecht who
has already won two features this season.

Gunderson pulled off a smooth slick move as the leaders stayed wide he went low and moved in front of the pack with five laps to go going on to win the race over Bell, Roney, Eggebrecht, Jack Rubach and Summers.

The millennium feature didn’t even get started when Monty Coffman broke something and spun in turn three. Cars scattered everywhere and it would be a complete restart. Steve Maciosek was sent to the pit area for causing that incident. Jeff Goodwin was the leader after each time and would go on to win the race. First Mike Lange and then fast timer Jacob Humphrey would challenge the leader but when one more restart would not stop Goodwin’s quest for a win. Lange was third with Paul Dygon, Mark Hartline and Brian Ulrich making up the top six.

This coming Saturday night is the second leg of the No Bull Series for the super late model cars with Quality Tire/All-America Care Company of Spring Grove,IL. the sponsor of the night. In the afternoon there will be a car show at their location in Spring Grove.

Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. first race at 7 sharp.
