Last Lap Thriller For Wallace!
By Dale Erdmann |
May 24, 2003; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was R.A. Adams
Enterprises of McHnery, Illinois night as the family owned business with the Midwest
largest supply of trailers put up extra money for all three divisions Saturday night at
Lake Geneva Raceway. Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake the current Budweiser super late models
point leader went home with $1000 for winning his second feature of the season. Scott
Eggebrecht of Crystal Lake, IL. amazed his fellow competitors by winning his second 25 lap
McHenry Limousine feature race and Dave Thomas of Franklin won his first 30 lap
Performance Unlimited sportsman feature of the season.
Pole sitters Dan Mecum and Mark Hartline who had slight advantage
dueled for the lead.Three laps later Mecum made a break for it with Shane Bishop second as
Hartline could now feel the pressure of Joe Fischer and Jason Hicks.By lap ten Mecum was
way out front as Bishop, Fischer, Billy Skinner Jr. and Rick Corso fought for advancement.
Three laps later Corso got past Skinner and Fischer with Bishop some lengths ahead. It was
still close throughout the field as the leader built up a comfortable cushion before Corso
slipped into second on lap twenty.Still five spots behind him was fast timer Jamie
Wallace. With just nine laps to go a back of the field incident brought out the only
caution and Mecums large lead was gone. On the restart Mecum walked away from the
field again with Corso now having a problem with Skinner, Bishop and Wallace.
Corso finally edged his way in on the leader with five laps to go,but Mecum wanted the win
as he looked flawless. Then on lap thirty four Corso gave it all it was worth inching past
Mecum for the lead. Mecum spun a few feet after that and this would set up a green white
checkered charge.
On the restart Corso could feel the pressure as Wallace got inside the new leader. The
crowd went wild as the white flag came out and it was a dead heat for the lead as Skinner
waited for a slip at the top. Coming into turn three Corso gave Wallace just enough room
to stick his nose inside the leader. At the center of the corner Wallace gave it his all
and Corso was challenged for the same piece of pavement. Wallace gained the lead with
Corso now second as the two crossed the line for the win.Skinner was third with Jerry
Cowan, Bishop and Wayne Freimund completing the top six in one great feature race.
The super stock feature brought Tom Fay in front of the field with Ken Eisbrenner, Mike
Bell and Brad Norgard right behind. The field remained in a tight formation with Tom
Roney, Scott Eggebrecht and Mike Gunderson on the move to the front. Bell got past
Eisbrenner on lap seven with Gunderson now fourth. Two laps later Gunderson and Eisbrenner
got together and the caution was shown. Both driver went to the back and Fay charged his
way out front with Bell creeping his way along side of him. Two laps were recorded before
the lead would change. Eggebrecht and Roney moved past Fay one lap later with Dave Melahn
following their path one lap later.
It took Eggebrecht seven laps to catch Bell and take over the lead then go on to win this
close race.Bell held back numerous challenges from third place Roney. Rob Summers, Jack
Rubach and Melahn were next. A post race inspection dropped
Roney to last place in the race with quick qualifier and point leader Sonny Schoffen moved
up to sixth.
The sportsman feature saw Jeremy Bloomberg take advantage of his outside pole position as
he grabbed the lead over Gary Norton, Dan Church and Mark Rhode. With six laps in the book
Dave Thomas was on the move advancing four positions before running into congestion at the
top. Jamie Dorsey and Church put up a road block with Steve Hoff now joining the ruckus at
the top.
Right behind them Gary Norton, Jeremy Miller, Erik Pierce, Bobby Hacker and Denny Norton
Jr. who had fast time were in a heated battle. Nine laps later Denny Norton Jr. and Pierce
tangled bringing this intense pace to a halt. On the restart Thomas took the correct side
on the cone line up.moving past Dorsey at the drop of the green.Miller, Hoff, James Swan
and Hacker looked like they were glued together. But rookie Hoff out shined everyone
securing fourth on lap twenty two. It was see/saw battle for second between Dorsey and
Thomas until lap twenty six.
Bloomberg got just wide enough for Thomas to slip under the leader one lap later and there
was a new leader. The final laps were extremely close with Thomas the winner. Bloomberg,
Dorsey, point leader Miller, Swan and Hoff came in next in another great contest.
This coming Saturday night the millennium late models and sport trucks join the super late
models and super stocks as Steinbrinks Pick and Save owned stores sponsor the
evening..Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. with racing at 7 sharp.
