Novoso Scores Millennium Late Model Win at LGR!
By Dale Erdmann |
May 24, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was a
cold 37degrees at race time but with over 100 race cars in the pit area and a sparse crowd
on hand the second week of Friday night stock car racing is now history. In the books
Tommy Nevoso of Trevor became the third different driver to win a feature this young
season in the S&P motorsports millennium late model feature race for 15 laps. Kenosha
driver Joe Miller won the non stop Herbs mini modified feature for 15 laps in his
first win this season. The Perfection Auto Body legends feature for 20 laps went to
defending champion Al Smith of Rockford,Illinois. Greg Sheldon of Crystal Lake,IL. won the
Anchor Towing Basic International 15 lap road course feature and Chad Ross of Kenosha won
the Sideline Motorsports sport truck feature for 12 laps.
Rookie Boyd Calvert dropped in front of the field when the
millennium late model feature began. On lap two Paul Dygon worked the leader over and the
lead changed hands. Tommy Nevoso moved up on the leader by lap seven but took until lap 14
to gain lead after a lengthy battle with Dygon. With just one lap to go quick timer Mark
Hartline tried everything to move into that top spot but Nevoso came across the line first
in this close contest Hartline was second with Dygon at his side.Clavert was fourth with
Carrie Dygon the only female competitior was fifth in her best finish to date.
The BIC cars ran on a homemade road course with Dave Edwards out front for the first 8
laps before Greg Sheldon managed to get by in one of those ticky corners.Former champion
Bob Koch chased the leader along with Dave Cheney in a see saw battle for second.Jeff Baum
out ran these two but fell short of a challenge before the race ended with Sheldon the
winner. Randy DeGraves was third as Nick Kaltelis captured fourth and Dan Meyer fifth as
just 58 cars qualified.
The mini modifieds were short on cars but not on action as Bill Trusky slipped in front of
the field as the double greens appeared. Hermie Schultz put the pressure on the leader
until problems put his mount in the pits on lap five for some unknown reason. Joe Miller
shot into third then second within two more laps and in just one more there was a new
leader. Before the checkered Phil Schultz the 1996 champion in his brother Jeffs car
grabbed second with Trusky third fast timer Mike VanHouten and Lee Morrison nearly in a
dead heat for fifth.
The Legends feature was extremely close as the see saw battle for positions went on until
the checkered flag was shown. Steve Lecht and visiting Eric Lokomoen dueled for the lead
two laps before Lokomoen darted out front. Then Garrett Will challenged the leader from
laps six to ten before taking over the top spot.At this halfway point things got real
heated as Curt Gnatzig who set fast time earlier in the night came through the field
knocking at the leaders door for three laps before becoming the third leader.
Some would think that the race for the lead would be over but Al Smith in
Larry Wills mount proved that the only lap that really counted was the final one.
Smith came across the line first winning the 20 lap event over Gnatzig Garrett Will
Clayton Kruse and Herman Greinig in a main event that had non stop thrills.
Chad Ross took fourteen laps to gain the top spot after taking fast time as Todd Ross who
led from lap six could not overcome the pressure but finished second with Bill Olson and
Vincent Merry next. Next Friday night will mark the first appearance of the Formula Indy
cars this season. This open wheel group brings in two classes. The five regular divisions
will also be here as a field of over 135 cars is expected. Time trials now begin at 6:15
p.m. due to the large field of cars. The first race will start at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
Pro moto cross racing takes place on the east end of the grounds at 8 pm.
Over 300 riders will compete.
