Kocourek, Huber, Hartline and Kalteis Score First
Career Wins!
By Dale Erdmann |
May 4, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. - Racing
finally resumed at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday Night as Wisconsin Fans for Auto Racing
sponsored the program. Second year driver Matt Kocourek of Racine walked away with the win
in the Budweiser super late model divisions 35 lap non stop feature. This was a first ever
win for the former legends driver.
Dan Huber of Antioch,Illinois won his first career 25 lap McHenry
Limousine super stock feature.Part of the Antioch connection Huber in the
former championship car in 1998 was clearly the fastest car on the surface. Mark Hartline
of Gilberts, IL. won the 15 lap S&P motorsports millennium late model feature.
Overshadowing his win was the debut of 23 year old Cari Dygon of Racine the first female
competitor in this division and Nick Kalteis of Lake Villa, IL. won his first non stop 20
lap Anchor Towing BIC car feature with nearly 60 of these little popular little race cars
in their season debut here.
The super late model feature just got started when Scott Poritz lost power
while running mid pack causing a big scare with everyone bearing down.Joe Fischer dove in
front with Fran Prestay and Billy Skinner Jr. fighting for second. By lap seven Matt
Kocourek was working on Skinner as Prestay challenged the leader. This continued for the
next eight laps before Prestay moved behind the leader after not getting an edge.
That was all Kocourek needed as he drove under both Skinner and Prestay and set out for
Fischer. It took just three more laps for the lead to change after putting on a great show
Kocourek would not be denied moving quickly to a two car advantage. Prestay knew that he
would have to try the inside if he would ever get to challenge the new leader.
By lap twenty Fischer fell victim to the pressure but by then the leader had a three
length lead. The pack was tightening up as Landry Potter fast timer Jamie Wallace and
Jerry Cowan joined the fray. But Kocourek drove an excellent race winning the event over
Prestay, Fischer, Skinner, Wallace and Al Schill.
Rookie Sonny Schoffen slipped in front of the twenty car super stock feature with Scott
Eggebrecht Mike Kooi and Pete Olson next.Second year driver Aaron Willms got turned coming
off turn two collecting Norm Paulsen Mike Bell Scott Peterson and Craig Mertes.
No one was injured but there was serious damage to these cars as the first and only
caution appeared on lap three. Schoffen scurried in front on the restart but Eggebrecht
was now glued to his side.
By lap seven Schoffen would lose the lead to Eggebrecht but this only lasted for three
laps with Dan Huber now inside the leader. It took Huber just a few tries before dropping
in front on lap ten.Behind Eggebrecht Jeremy Tess Schoffen Olson and John Maki Jr. were
trying to move up. Before long quick timer Jack Rubach was right in this cluster. It was
only Huber that had his position secured as second through tenth was up for grabs.
At the checkered Huber was in firm command of his first win.Tess held back Rubach who
nipped Eggbrecht for third.Rob Summers took fifth and John Jenssen completed the top six.
It took Mark Hartline just two laps to move out front of the field of the millennium late
model feature after Paul Dygon led the first lap. Other than the leader the race was not
over as Tommy Nevso took second to Hartline Jeff Goodwin was next with Dygon next and Ken
Joosten fifth.
Nick Kalteis took the lead on lap ten of this 20 lap non stop contest and moved to a big
lead in his first career win of the Basic International division feature.
Next Saturday night McHenry Limousine and Performance Unlimited will
sponsor the program. The sportsman join the super late models and super stocks. Time trials
begin at 5:45pm. and the first race at 7 pm sharp. Pro Moto Cross racing continues
their weekly program at 8 pm. every Friday night on the stadium dirt course.
