Kocourek, Huber, Swan and Lepperd LGR Feature
winners!
Rex Jr. and Dawson Top Gauntlet!
By Dale Erdmann |
September 7, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. - Summer was in full force at
Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night as some earlier feature winners came back to victory
lane tonight. Matt Kocoureck of Racine the current Budweiser super late model point leader
just won the 35 lap feature race in his fifth win of the season.
Dan Huber of Antioch, Illinois won his fifth McHenry Limousine super
stock 25 lap feature in another close contest. The 2002 Performance unlimited sportsman
champion James Swan of Lake Geneva won his sixth 25 lap feature and Matt Lepperd of Eagle
won the 10 lap Vintage race car Association feature. Starter Dave Rex Jr. and Kevin Dawson
owner and promoter of the raceway won their third ganulet race against a full field of BIC
drivers that tried their hardest to put them out of the race.
Rick Corso slipped in front of the super late model main event with Matt
Kocourek, Jeff Way, Chad Barker, Joe Fischer and Jerry Cowan next. For the next thirteen
laps it was a see saw fight for the front spot with either driver leading numerous laps
before Kocourek inched ahead of the field. There was no breathing room for the leader as
Chad Barker moved in for a challenge just before Jeff Way spun on lap seventeen.
On the restart Kocourek bearly held the advantage as Barker wanted that lead. Meanwhile
Corso now had Eddie May right on his tail with Al Schill, Jamie Wallace, and Fran Prestay
next. From time to time Barker would try to get under the leader but Kocourek knew he
needed points after his poor qualifying run for the first time in weeks. The field
tightened up with six laps to go as Billy Baumeister who came from second in the semi
after not timing in was now eighth.
It was just like a parade lap for the win as Kocourek held back Barker who held back May
who in return held off Schill and Wallace for a very close race event.
Trevor Mack moved in front of the super stock feature with Tom Roney, Paul Konieczny,
rookie Ken Eisbrenner and Norm Paulsen all over the leader. Just like the last feature the
lonely caution came on lap four when Adam Mass got squeezed off the track and slammed hard
into the wall. Mass was uninjured but his quest for a win was over for tonight.
With the green displayed Mock drove out front one more time as Roney was setting up the
leader for a challenge. Two laps later Roney was the new leader but now Dan Huber was
right behind him and Paulsen followed quickly with Mock now fourth and Mike Bell
fifth with this cluster for the lead. Roney could feel the pressure as Huber first tried
the inside to no avail and then the outside grabbing the lead on lap eleven.
Huber held on to claim another victory with a great race for second as Paulsen nipped
Roney who held off Bell and Jack Rubach to round out the top five.
Just like the features before them the only caution of the sportsman event came on lap
three when Terry Crowell the leader and challenging Bobby Gutkneckt tangled for the only
caution of the race. Brian Baker became the leader with James Swan right behind him. It
was a great show up front for the next seven laps before Swan got around the leader.
Three laps later Kenny Joosten followed but time ran out for any serious
challenge for the race as Swan finished far ahead of Joosten last weeks winner Zac
Deeringer who is locked into a tight point battle going down for the championship next
Saturday night. Joosten took over second by five points ahead of Deeringer. Fast time
Jocko Terrault was next and Baker fifth.
The vintage car feature had just one caution too when Larry Hoeler lost a wheel midway
through the feature with fast qualifier Matt Lepperd on his way to victory. When the green
came out last weeks feature winner John Vassh tried everything in the book but had to
settle for second with former sport truck driver Frank Caravetta third, Dave Johnson was
fourth and Dan Vash fifth.
This coming Saturday night will be the sportsman championships along with the first
Bi-annual bus race with full size units racing. The super late models. super stocks and
the vintage cars will race too. Racing will continue through October 5th. for weekly
action.
