Schill No Bull Series Winner!  May Wins The Big One at LGR!
By Dale Erdmann

August 17, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. - The weather was perfect and a large field of cars were on hand for the third and final round of No Bull series sponsored by Burlington Farmers Supply and 5 Star race car bodies at Lake Geneva raceway Saturday night. Al Schill of Franklin went into the final round in fourth place and came out on top of some 50 different drivers that raced in one or more of the series events this season in the Budweiser super late models taking home an extra $1000 for his efforts.

James Swan (#97) was a winner again in the sportsman main at LGR. He was joined in victory lane by Junior Fan Club member Trace Radford. Swan wrapped up the LGR Sportsman title for 2002 with the win!

Eddie May of Crystal Lake, Illlinois the 1986 late model champion won the 50 lap feature.May said after the race “it’s great to be able to race and not crash, Fran (Prestay who finished second) was fun to race with as he gave me all the room I wanted and do the same for me thank you the fans for being here and support us and to the great sponsors of the series and” and received $1000 for his win. Sonny Schoffen was second in the 25 lap McHenry Limousine super stock feature but after a DQ of the apparent winner he was awarded the race win. James Swan of Lake Geneva clinched the Performance unlimited sportsman division title as the 2001 McLeodUSA champion won his sixth feature of the season.

Fran Prestay used his outside pole starting spot to jump in front of the super late model feature with Terry Patnode, Scott Poritz and Jerry Cowan next. It was an extremely tight formation as the next ten laps looked just the opening one as Poritz and Patnode fought for  the second position. Eddie May who started third row inside was working his way around these two with Wayne Freimund all over Cowan. With such a tight field any little mistake would be costly to someone and on lap thirteen something happened as Jamie Wallace, Kent Burkoth, and Rick Corso the fast timer got together halting the grueling pace.

As the green reappeared May slipped along side Prestay and the match up would begin. On lap fifteen Jerry Freeman got past Freimund as the top ten were close. On lap thrity one fast qualifier Donovan Morgan scared everyone as he entered the straightaway after turn four and got lose. Morgan pulled off the move of the race causing no harm as he just nipped the rear of Matt Kocourek’s car but everyone continued without an incident. Prestay and May had a see saw battle for the front position as Prestay would lead each lap at the wire.

There was some movement throughout the field but with positions still too close to call race fans were treated to an excellent race. With the white flag out Prestay looked like he pulled off the big win but coming to the line May pulled him across the line for a thrilling finish to a one stop race.Poritz held on to third with Cowan Freeman and Morgan next.

Norm Paulsen scooted out front of the super stock main event with Jack Clark Greg Beebe Sonny Schoffen and rookie Ken Eisbrenner looking like they were glued together. By lap nine Schoffen was knocking on Paulsen’s door as Mike Gunderson now moved into third after starting fourth row outside. Schoffen took over the front spot on lap ten but then the only caution of the race came on lap thirteen when a close running Scott Scholl and Beebe tangled.

On the restart Schoffen know Gunderson was there and after a three lap fight for the top spot Gunderson was the new leader. Right behind these two Dan Huber was looking for any   slip by the top two. Paulsen was right behind Huber and Jack Rubach was next. The final five laps were awesome as the top eight were side by side looking for advancement. Guderson in
the first night with his new car after totally destroying his other one three weeks ago came across the line in first place for his second win of the season. Rookie Schoffen was second with Huber at his side and Rubach at his rear. Fast timer Bob Moeller was fifth and Scott Eggebrecht was sixth. A post race inspection dropped Gunderson for too much compression and Paulsen was credited with sixth as Schoffen won the event.

Jocko Terrault led three laps of the sportsman feature before Brian Baker moved in front but on lap six the only stoppage came after Jeff Peterson spun. This gave James Swan the advantage he needed by closing the gap on Baker. Then came lap eleven and the lead changed hands with Swan winning the crown and the race.Baker held on to second with Zac Deeringer Nick Schumacher quick timer Kenny Joosten and Kevin King in a tight pack.
