Gnatzig Story Book Win!  Johnson Takes Point Lead at LGR!

August 16, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. -With just three more point nights left for many of the small car divisions at Lake Geneva Raceway Friday nights show brought some exciting news for afew drivers. Curt Gnatzig of Hartford won the 20 lap Perfection Auto Body legends feature. Gnatzig wasn’t able to qualify because he blew a cam in hot laps but after some hard work by his crew and fellow drivers help the new point leader started dead last and won the event.

Tom Ross (#1) proved to be the man to catch in Sport Truck feature action at Lake Geneva Raceway.

Defending Herb’s mini modified champion Ken Johnson of Paddock Lake was on fire tonight setting fast time finishing second in the dash and running away with the 15 lap feature. Johnson for the first time with just two Friday nights to go and then their championship on September 27th. took over the point lead by 25 points. Mark Hartline of Gilberts,Illinois just missed a clean sweep of the S&P motorsports millennium cars races and took a impressive victory in the close 20 lap feature. Jeff Bremer of Round Lake,IL. won his second 15 lap Anchor Towing Basic  International car feature of the season. Fast timer Tom Ross of Northbrook,IL. won the 15 lap sport truck feature in a close contest and Jim Veugeler of Crystal Lake,IL. started out side pole and ran away with the Rascal Outlaws 15 lap feature.

Clayton Kruse darted out front of the legends feature with Brian Cataldi the fast qualifier Larry Will and Curt Gnatzig next. Within four laps Gnatzig slipped under Kruse but could not make it stick. Then on the out side the lead changed hands on lap six and not even two lapped cars could help his fellow competitors as Gnatzig won his fourth feature of the season. Cataldi nipped Kruse for second with Garrett Will and Larry Will rounding out the top five.

Ken Johnson started last in the second largest field of the season but took less than one lap to secure the lead and the win in the mini modified feature.The race for second through eighth was great as Roy Morrison took second Bill Trusky third with former point leader Jeff Schultz who nipped Johnson by less than a few inches was next and Joe Miller fifth.

Point leader Nick Kalteis lead the first five laps before Jeff Bremer moved in front and easily won the BIC feature over quick fastest Greg Sheldon Dan Hunt Kalteis and Dave Cheney Jr.

It took Tom Ross the fastest qualifier seven laps to get to the front and then hold off the challenges of defending champion Vincent Merry and Lance Ross for the win in sport truck racing.

Bart Reinen and rookie Boyd Calvert dueled for the point of the millennium late model feature with Steve Maciosek next. Reinen headed to the pits quickly with unknown problems as Calvert charged in front quickly Paul Dygon slipped into second with Joshua Shaw pressuring for third. Mike Carpenter Jr. Mike Lange and Denny Norton Jr. got togther on lap three and the race came to a halt. On the restart Clavert held onto the top spot for two more laps before Shaw inched ahead.

It took Mark Hartline just four more laps to catch and over took Shaw then moving on to the victory eleven laps later. Shaw was a distant second with another rookie Jacob Humphrey next Denny Norton Jr. recovered for fourth and Calvert was along side for fifth.

This coming Friday night the Millennium late models legend cars mini modifieds BIC cars and sport trucks will race. Time trials begin at 6pm. racing at 7:30 for the five divisions of action.
