Swan Overall Sportsman Winner!
Point Battles Tighten Up at Lake Geneva Raceway!
By Dale Erdmann |
August 10, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. - Lynch Motors and Avoco Oil
Company sponsored the sportsman double header at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night as
point leader James Swan won the overall crown for the twin 25 lap features. It wasnt
too hard to figure out who won as Swan won both features. Kent Burkoth of Pell Lake won
his second Budweiser super late model feature of the year.Mike Bell out of Waukesha won
his third 25 lap McHenry Limousine super stock features of the season.
The first 25 lap feature was just one lap old as Denny Norton Jr.
dropped out with engine problems. Shawn Uptahl jumped out front with Chris Klein and Zac
Deeringer fighting for second. Three laps later Kleins engine expired and the
caution was shown. Deeringer out ran Uptahl for the lead as the green came back out with
Brian Baker quickly taking over second.
On lap thirteen Baker and Nick Schumacher tangled while running tight. This gave James
Swan the fast qualifier the break he needed and just five laps later there was a new
leader. One more caution came on lap twenty three as Erik Pierce running third went around
after contact with Uptahl as this group was in a four car cluster. Swan moved in front
with a green white checkered situation taking the first race over Deeringer, Kenny
Joosten, Gary LaMonte and John Fischer.
Pierce charged out front of the second feature with Baker in hot pursuit. Lap five Baker
became the leader with Schumacher all over Pierce. On lap eight as the leader and three
other cars fought for the lead Fischer spun bringing out the caution. Baker
remained the leader with a tight field just behind him. Then came lap thirteen as Baker,
Uptahl and two other drivers fought for the lead Schumacher got into the leader and around
he went and out came the caution. Again Swan got the break he wanted and three laps later
there was new leader. Swan went on to win the race as Deeringer nipped Uptahl with Pierce
and LaMonte next.
Overall Swan, Deeringe,r LaMonte, Joosten and Uptahl made the top five. Swan claimed the
$500 first place money. Deeringer $400, LaMonte $300, Joosten $250, and Uptahl $200 with
extra money from Lynch Motors of Burlington.
The super late model feature had Joe Fischer move in front with Rick Corso, Mike
DeKeuster, and Jerry Freeman extremely tight. By lap eight point leader Matt Kocourek was
challenging DeKeuster then Corso and five laps later the eader. Kocourek quickly
moved away from the field and looked like hed win his fourth feature of the saeason.
The race for second was great as Fischer and Freeman put on a show. Things chanced as
Freeman broke away from the pack and set his sights on the leader. The last thing Kocourek
wanted to see would be a caution but on lap twenty five Denny Hiffman went around and the
race came to a halt. As the race relined Kocourek ducked into the pits with engine
problems and Freeman became the leader.
With Freeman in command of the top spot looking for his first win Jason Hicks, Landry
Potter, and Corso made contact sending Hicks into the wall before coming to rest off of
turn three. This set up a five lap dash for all the gold.Freeman looked good but now Kent
Burkoth was along side the leader and with two laps to go the lead went to Burkoth in the
Brian Ulrich mount taking the win over Freeman, Eddie May, Jerry Cowan and Fischer all
under a blanket.
Tom Roney inched his way in front of the super stock feature with Jack Clark, Pete Olson,
Mike Bell and Norm Paulsen in a close formation. On lap three Bell got by Clark only to see
Clark come back and then take over the lead on lap five. After a five lap battle for
second with Roney, but Bell was on a mission to get to the top.
On lap eleven Bell got under Clark as the race still looked like the opening lap. Paulsen
nearly was collected by the wall on lap fouteen but the intense pace continued. Olson got
his second wind and Dave Melahn was now fourth and it was still too close to call. With
five laps to go Melahn inched his way into second with Olson having to contend with Bob
Moeller.
The hard charge was all what it was cracked up to be with Bell just ahead of Melahn,
Moeller, Sonny Schoffen and point leader Rob Summers.
This coming Saturday night Burlington Farmers Supply will sponsor the 5-Star Race Car
Bodies No Bull series finale. The feature for 50 laps is worth $1000 to win and the
over-all winner of the series an extra $1000 as Randy Rodgers is the current leader. Time
