Schill, Huebner, Derringer LGR Winners! By Dale Erdmann

August 4, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. - Some weeks we wish we had a sponsor of the night Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway we had many sponsors including Radicom, Jim Adams Auto Body of McHenry,Illinois,  Woodward Transportation Company of Racine and Dowe and Wagner Heating and Air Conditioning of Twin Lakes as 7-time track champion Al Schill picked up his second feature win in the Budweiser super late model division. Dan Huber of Antioch,IL. won his third McHenry Limousine super stock 25 lap feature of the season and Zac Deeringer of McHenry,IL. won his second Performance unlimited sportsman 20 lap feature of the year.

Jason Hicks (#63) and Al Schill Sr. (#14) ran wheel to wheel for much of the Super Late Model contest.  Schill would take the lead and go on to victory. Zac Deeringer (#02) scored his second Sportsman feature win of the 2002 season at Lake Geneva Raceway. Dan Huber (#44) has become a repeat visitor to victory lane having won his third Super Stock feature win of the year.

Jason Hicks moved in front of the feature field with Jerry Freeman, Randy Rodgers, Al Schill and Scott Poritz in a very tight formation. On lap three Fran Prestay changed lanes but Jerry Cowan was already there. As the dust flew somehow Cowan managed to keep off the wall even after going on two wheels during the melee. Neither driver was injured and both returned for the next green. Hicks slipped in front again as Schill outran Freeman to the corner even though the wall was very close. Quickly Rick Corso moved into fifth then put the pressure of Rodgers.

Right behind this cluster fast timer in his first visit of the year Ryan Matthew and Mike Monroe were putting on a show. Point leader Matt Kocourek was now eighth on lap eight. The top ten looked like the parade lap as Schill moved under the leader.

On lap twelve Hicks knew that there was going to be a challenge but the young driver wasn’t going down without a fight. For the next five laps they dueled for the lead. Schill and Hicks bumped together numerous times during the race for the front spot. The lead changed hands the next go round but the margin of comfort never increased as Hicks tried everything to get back in front. To compound the problem Freeman was alongside Hicks.

Four more caution flags came out one on lap thirty as Dan Mecum went around. Each time Schill stayed in firm command of the top spot. The next on lap thirty three as Poritz flew off turn three but was not injured. This tightened up an already close group as Schill now had Freeman and Monroe just hoping for a mistake. As the next green appeared and that’s when things happened as Freeman spun halting the action.On the next restart Monroe and now Kocourek were all over Schill along with Matthew. At the checkered Schill remained the leader and winner with Monroe next Matthew nipped Kocourek for third with Hicks fifth in a very close finish.

Mike Gunderson in his back up car moved in front of the super stock feature with Greg Beebe, Mike Kooi, Scott Scholl and Tom Fay next. There was three deep racing as Kooi and Scholl challenged the leader for that top spot. Somehow Kooi inched ahead after a tussle with Gunderson that would not go away. Things got ugly on lap five when Sonny Schoffen spun coming off turn four. Fast qualifier Rob Summers bumped the back of a slowing Jack Rubach as Adam Mass got involved and out came the only caution of the event.

When the next green appeared Kooi had Scholl Gunderson and now Dan Huber looking at his position. Eight laps later Huber out maneuvered Kooi for the lead as John Janssen joined the cluster in front. Huber never looked back winning the race by a comfortable margin with Janssen second, Kooi third, Rubach recovered for fourth and Scholl was fifth as second through tenth was tight.

The sportsman feature brought Kevin King in front for the first three laps before Zac Deeringer took over the lead and held back the challenges from Kenny Joosten who nipped James Swan for second as Deeringer won the race by a small margin. Mike Lange was back in his championship car from 2001 and finished fourth with Kevin King fifth. A post race inspection dropped King for unknown reasons and Erik Pierce last weeks feature winner was mved into fifth.

Avoco Oil Company along with Lynch Motors will sponsor a sportsman doubleheader with Twin 25 lap features and a $500 to win the overall program this coming Saturday night for the Sportsman division, along with the super late models and super stocks on the same card. Time trials begin at 5:45pm with racing at 7 pm.
