By Dale Erdmann and Gary Vercauteren

June 22, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. -  With temperatures at nearly 100 degrees and a moon that was almost full things will happen and they did at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night as Lynch Motors sponsored the program. The Budweiser super late model feature was close But took nearly one hour to complete as the 35 lap event went to Racine driver Matt Kocourek a former legends competitor. For the third week in a row the McHenry Limousine super stock feature for 25 laps went non stop as Scott Eggebrecht of Crystal Lake, Illinois picked up his second win of the season after finishing second.

Scott Eggebrecht (#64) was best in the 'Geneva's 25-lap super stock feature.

Erik Darnell and Jamie Artelt dove out front as the field looked like it slowed compared to these two.But it was a no start after everyone could not stay side by side for the parade lap. Underway Darnell had Artelt all over him with Terry Patnode, Dan Mecum and Chuck Duncan next.Lap four Brian Ulrich spun as the field split missing him and out came the first of many caution stops.Again the top three were just like the last green with Jerry Cowan Rick Corso and Jamie Wallace glued to their back side.

On lap nine Mecum, Corso, and Ulrich got together for the next caution. It took lots of work to get Corso’s mount ready for the next green but the crew had their driver ready for the next bell. This time Cowan and Wallace were in a dead heat for third as Darnell maintained his lead over Artelt. Three laps later Cowan crept in on Patnode as the leader finally had time to move to a small advantage. By lap twenty Cowan finally shook Patnode loose and closed in on Artelt.

One more time around and the next caution came out for Denny Hiffman and Patnode get together. This just tightened the field even tighter Darnell was firmly in command of the top spot but suddenly Artelt got too far outside and drifted back six positions without any another incident.Quickly Matt Kocourek and Fran Prestay diced for third place as Kocourek won the tussle. By lap twenty five things were very close but no one but Darnell liked their position.Cowan moved inside the leader one lap later with Kocourek just looking for a mistake at the top.

Hiffman spun on lap twenty eight and again on twenty nine as Darnell looked good even with the competition behind him. That would change with just six laps to go the leader had a right front tire go down and his second victory of the season was over for now. Kocourek and now Billy Skinner Jr. were in a see saw battle for the lead. Two laps later Cowan and Prestay joined this fray. A stalled car in turn two brought out the final caution with just two laps to go.

It was a long race but the fight at the top was worth the wait as Kocourek held on to win the race over Skinner who was at his side Cowan was next with Prestay,   a recovered Corso and fast qualifier Jason Hick rounding out the top six.

Craig Mertes moved in front of the super stock feature with Tom Fay, Sonny Schoffen, Mike Gunderson, Mike Kooi and Pete Olson pulling off some great two and three deep racing for the next spot. Rookie Ken Eisbrenner smacked the super stretch wall but no caution was needed as the intense pace continued. Two laps later it was side by side racing for the top spot.

By lap five Schoffen inched ahead of the field but by then Fay wasn’t content with third but then Bob Moeller joined this cluster at the top.

Mertes and Moeller dueled for second after Fay got squeezed out of his position by his unwillness to go four deep.Mid point of this race Schoffen maintained his lead with Moeller, Scott Eggebrecht and now Dave Melahn trying everything to get past the leader. With just five laps to go Moeller slipped in front coming home the winner with Eggebrecht, Schoffen, Melahn, Dan Huber and quick timer jack Rubach sixth. A post race inspection dropped Moeller from the finish after the weight percentages did not add up. This moved Eggebrecht into the top spot and John Janssen into sixth.

Rod Brewe wins Planet Pages Mid-Am race during Lynch Chev-Olds Night

Rod Brewe nosed inside Brian Baker on lap 26 after a door-to-door battle and raced to victory in the 35-lap Planet Pages Mid-Am Stock Car Series feature Saturday night at the Lake Geneva Raceway before a large Lynch Chev-Olds Night crowd.

Brewe, a series winner a year ago at Road America, won by several car lengths over 2001 series champion James Swan. Rookie Erik Pierce, making his first series start, showed a good deal of racing talent by nailing down third. Baker drifted back to fourth at the finish while series rookie point leader Jake Ryan charged from the rear to take fifth and Terry Crowell,
making his first series start for 2002, ended up sixth.

Baker set the pace for the opening 11 rounds before Gary LaMonte zipped by in the lower lane. The caution flag flew on lap 20 when fast qualifier Peter "Speedy" Hernandez spun in turn one. As the field regrouped LaMonte's car began to leak fluid. He was sent to the pit area, giving the lead back to Baker and ending his quest for his first ever series victory.

Brewe immediately went to the inside lane and slipped past Crowell for second place on lap 23. The caution flag flew one lap later when Ken Joosten slid off the turn three banking.

It took Brewe three laps to wiggle past Baker. Pierce and Swan drove under Baker in the final laps with Swan inching out Pierce for second place at the finish line.
