Eddie May Scores Second Feature Win at LGR!
By Dale Erdmann and Gary Vercauteren

June 1, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. It was an night to be at the races and Lake Geneva Raceway’s Saturday night program had great weather until 8:30 pm. when the front went through. At race time it was 60 degrees warmer than one week ago as Eddie May of Cry stal Lake, Illinois became the first driver to win more than one feature for the Budweiser
super late models in their 35 lap contest. The McHenry Limousine super stocks 25 lap feature went non stop after a parade lap incident went to a full restart as Bob Moeller of McHenry,IL. the 1993 champion drove the Tony Burrafato car to victory LGR regular sportsman driver Denny Norton Jr. of McHenry,IL. won the exciting 35 lap Planet Pages Mid American feature.

Bob Moeller (#63) who won the Super Stock title in 1993 borrowed a car from Tony Burrafato and  won the super stock main event Saturday at Lake Geneva!

The super late model feature saw Chuck Duncan and Jeff Storm race side by side like a parade lap for the first fifteen rounds with Jason Hicks Billy Skinner Jr. and Scott Poritz right behind them.Duncan led every lap until Storm inched ahead on lap sixteen. Duncan came back in front on lap nineteen just before fast time qualifier Brian Ulrich went around in turn three stopping this great match up.

On the restart Storm back for the first time since destroying his old mount earlier this year moved ahead by the end of the next lap Eddie May slipped into second with Hicks and Duncan dueling for the position.Coming off turn two Duncan slowed after losing traction   but everyone continued. Larry Surleta spun on the next go round and the caution came out one more time.On the restart Storm bobbled and May moved in front entering turn two with Hicks still third. Duncan slowed dramatically two laps later causing another caution as everyone jacked up.

This created a tight situation that would not go away as May led the way over Storm, Hicks, Skinner, Rick Corso, Al Schill, and Eric Darnell. By lap twenty six Storm got his second wind and May could feel the pressure. Then one lap later the challenger drifted alittle and May secured the helm but the see saw battle wasn’t over. There was another caution on lap thirty as Dan Mecum Terry Patnode and Ulrich tangled created a five lap dash that wouldn’t be forgotten soon.

Entering turn four coming in front of the best crowd of the season Corso drifted high causing a three deep situation that everyone survived. This happened two more times before the white came out. Again as the cluster entered turn four May, Storm, Corso who slipped out of his groove Hicks and Darnell brought the crowd to their feet for a real run with May the winner and everyone finishing the way they came off turn four.

The super stock feature was another grueling event as the false restart had everyone all over the surface before the true start brought John Maki Jr. in front of the twenty car field. Tom Fay, Craig Mertes and Mike Kooi were all over the eader. Quickly Kooi and Bob Moeller moved in on the leader with Adam Mass on Mertes. By lap eight Maki knew Kooi was right along side of him but the leader held his own. Fay dropped out with problems on lap nine as the group behind the front runner was getting edgy.

On lap fifteen Moeller and quick qualifier John Janssen moved in on Maki. Moeller and Maki raced side by side for the next three laps before the lead changed hands.Maki came back one more time on lap twenty but then the runner up had to contend with Janssen. The final laps were great as no one knew who second place would be.Moeller would win the race by a small margin as Janssen nipped Maki for second. Tess took fourth with new point leader Rob Summers and Dan Huber nearly in a draw for the next two positions.

Denny Norton Jr scored the biggest win of his racing career Saturday night in the 35-lap Planet Pages Mid-Am Stock Car Series feature race at the Lake Geneva Raceway before the largest crowd of the 2002 season.

It was a photo finish with Norton edging out Peter Hernandez by two inches in a door-to-door battle to the checkered flag on the one-third mile paved oval.

Norton, driving the Performance Unlimited Dodge Intrepid, took the lead from early pacesetter Josh Bauer on lap 25.   Bauer, driving a brand new Monte Carlo in its first race, arrived late and received no practice.  Bauer started on the front row and took the lead immediately.  Norton pulled to his outside and stayed there until the caution flag flew on lap 17.  The incident took out three of the race favorites.  James Swan was lapping a slower can when he got squeezed into Brian Baker's machine going into turn one.  Baker's cars was sent spinning while running in fifth spot and clipped Bill Preitzel's Dodge Avenger.

All three of the cars involved went to the rear of the pack on the restart.   Norton went back after Bauer when the race was restarted and finally squeezed past on lap 25.   On lap 29 Hernandez got around Bauer for second and slipped inside Norton.  The two leaders raced side by side the last five laps with Norton using the outside line to carry enough speed off
turn four for the win.

Fast qualifer and series rookie of the year contender Jake Ryan brought the Genz-Ryan Plumbing and Heat Monte Carlo home in third.   Rod Brewe, who had the series point lead, coming into the event was fourth.  Preitzel made a charge through the field after the restart to nab fifth and Bobby Gutknecht  raced to a sixth place finish on his birthday.

It was Valvoline Cup Night at the track with certificates good for oil products awarded to compeitors.

This coming Saturday night Lynch Motors of Burlington and Waterford presents the twin 25 lap feature for the Performance Unlimited cars.$500 will go to the over all winner of that feature. The super late models and the super stocks will also race.Time trials begin at 5:45 pm.  and the first race is at 7 pm. sharp.
