Wild Full Moon Night at Lake Geneva Raceway!
By Dale Erdmann

May 25, 2002; Lake Geneva, WI. It was Steinbrinks Pick and Save Night at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night. The weather just 2 degrees higher than last night but the big story NO wind and a near full moon. The Budweiser super late model feature took nearly 50 minutes to run even thou it was an excellent race while it was running. Terry Patnode of South Milwaukee who started his racing career in 1986 as a dirt track whales driver before moving to the pavement in 1990 at LGR won his first 35 lap feature since August of 1997. That was Patnode’s last full season until this year after ill health sidelined the smooth stay out of trouble driver who won two feature in 1997. Dan Huber of Antioch, Illinois won his second 25 lap feature in the McHenry Limousine super stocks and visiting Josh Bauer won the 20 lap Performance Unlimited sportsman feature from start to finish. All three features were close and exciting.

Dan Hueber (#44) works his way past Rob Summers (#38) on his way to winning
the super stock feature Saturdat at Lake Geneva.

Billy Baumeister a second generation driver moved off his out side pole starting position with Terry Patnode right with him.Joe Fischer Billy Skinner Jr. and Fran prestay were next.

Right behind this cluster that would not shake loose of each other Matt Kocourek second generation driver Jamie Wallace and quick qualifier Jason Hicks another second generation driver were too close to call for any positions. With ten laps in starting the next lap wasn’t to good for Brian Ulrich spinning while running mid pack with the first caution appearing.

On the restart Baumeister held his own to a hard charging Patnode and now Kocourek then there was a spin by rookie Dan Mecum and Chuck Duncan but no caution came out until the other corner had a Denny Hiffman and Jeff Lornez crash head on collision. No one was injured but both drivers night was over. After a lengthy clean up due to that mishap when the next green appeared Baumeister maintained the lead sometimes less than a foot over Patnode, right behind them it was another great story with Prestay trying to hold back Al Schill, Kocourek and Wallace.

On lap twenty four Prestay spun bringing out another caution. This bunched up the field even tighter on the next green.Kocourek was on the move drawing up on the top three but on lap thirty after coming along side the leader for the lead a squeeze job ensued and the challenger went around and was then hit by Jerry Cowan who had no place to go. This caused a long delay with the mess left by these two cars. Both were uninjured but their night with both being hauled to the pits for the remaining five laps.

With just three laps to go Patnode again edged ahead of Baumeister and for the first time a lap was completed before the final caution came out for another spun mount. This set up a green white checkered situation. Patnode bobbed on the restart and Baumeister stormed in front but then Patnode forged his way back in front as they diced for the win. Coming across the line Patnode became the sixth different winner in so many weeks.Baumeister was right along side for second Schill was third with Randy Rodgers, Fischer and Rick Corso rounding out the top six in what was a long but great race.

Mike Kooi came in front of the twenty car super stock feature with Craig Mertes right on his bumper. By lap three Scott Eggebrecht was working his way into second then the lead before the next go round. Bob Moeller in the Tony Burrafato car challenged the new leader but then Rob Summers joined the cluster and by lap eight Dan Huber was right there too. On lap eleven Huber out ran everyone except Eggebrecht but the leader knew he was there. The last thing this group wanted to see was a caution but on lap fifteen Adam Mass and Scott Scholl got together halting the action.

Eggebrecht, Huber and Summers put on one great show but then on lap eighteen fast timer and point leader Jack Rubach tangled with rookie Sonny Schoffen in turn three with the intense battle throughout the field Norm Paulsen Mike Bell and Ken Eisbrenner had no place to race and crashed because of that other incident. No one was injured but Paulsen’s car was extensively damaged. Underway the lead changed hands quickly with Huber now on top.

Summers and Eggebrecht had Moeller John Janssen and Mertes all over them with another great conclusion shaping up. It was the best five lap dash anyone could have asked for as Huber won the race over Summers, Janssen, Jeremy Tess Eggbrecht and Moeller under a blanket in this barn burner.

Josh Bauer Ken Joosten and Nick Schumacher ran hard for the opening bell of the sportsman 22 car field. Then as quick as the race began the caution came out for the Rick Rowlett and Rob Werkmeister tangle. When the green reappeared Scott Ascher moved up into third with a very tight field behind them. On lap seven Brian Baker and Gary LaMonte tangled stoppingthe race again. When the race resumed Bauer and Joosten moved forward as Ascher now had John Fischer to contend with in a see saw battle for third.

It would be a non stop twelve laps to the finish in what truned out to be a good race with Bauer taking the win over Joosten Fischer another visitor Rod Brewe who hauled down from Menomonie for this show Denny Norton Jr. was fifth and James Swan who got boxed up stopping his four night win streak was sixth.

This coming Saturday night will be the rescheduled Planet Pages Mid American series points show along with the super late models and super stocks. Time trials will be at 5:45 p.m. and the first race at 7 p.m.
