night at Lake Geneva Raceway!

By Dale Erdmann

April 12, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. When the gates open for 36th season of oval track stock car racing a new part of history will unfold. Three former champions and the defending champion could all take the green flag in the 35 lap super late model feature.

The newest to join the entry list is 1994 champion Fran Prestay of Silver Lake, co-owner of 5 Star Stock Car Bodies. Scott Poritz of Burlington a five time will be behind the wheel half the time, giving their fellow race drivers another force to be reckoned with no matter who will be in the car.

Al Schill of Franklin won his first championship here in 1969 in an open wheel modified. Then his first of four super late model titles back in 1975, then 1997, 98 and 99. Last year Schill came down to compete about 60 % of the time and did real well.

Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake won the late model championship here in 1992. During the off season Jamie lost his father Ted one of top drivers afew decades ago.

Defending champion Landry Potter of Delavan comes from a racing family. His father Claude was a top modified driver around the area. Landry won his first title in the street stock division the year after the new track was built,1991. Last year Potter had a mission of compassion as his great friend Jim Kjellander was killed in a automobile accident on March 6th, 2000. Potter put the number 55 on his usual number 22, in memory of Kjellander. Starting off a the BARS motorsports show a few weeks later, Landry won his fourth   "Best of show" at this big Midwest show. Then after an up and down first half of the season, Potter took control during that last month, winning his first super late model crown. Potter started off this year with a top twelve finish in the BARS "let's go racing" show held last month.
