By Dale Erdmann

April 12, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. With the season opener for weekly oval track stock car racing at Lake Geneva Raceway slated for Saturday night April 14th. some exciting news comes to race fans just before that first green flag.

Two veteran drivers that haven't raced in afew seasons return to the one third mile paved banked oval located in southeastern Wisconsin. The drivers who called the raceway office today are Dave Melahn of Burlington, who was one of the top sportsman and hobby stock drivers afew seasons ago. Melahn will not campaign the familar number 69,used during the first half of his career here. This time Dave will be in the highly compeitive McHenry Limo super stocks. His new number will be 37, because of the team association with number 73, Adam Regnier.

The other driver has known as "Grandpa" by many fans that have followed his career on the dirt, racing sportsman cars and open wheel sprints, before racing late models at LGR. His name is Larry Steagall of Pleasant Prairie. Larry has just purchased the number 38 super stock car of rookie Rob Summers of Lake Geneva. Summers has just purchased a Denny Norton classis from Performance Unlimited.

The super stock division does not have a defending champion, as Jeff Lorenz of Waukesha the 2000 champ will race in the super late models this season.,along with runner up Jerry Cowan of Burlington. Third place John Janssen of Genoa City will race a sportsman car. This leaves the field open, but Regnier who finished fourth in the standings last season, along with Mike Kooi, the Peterson brothers Doug and Greg, Andy Szymanskij, Mike Bell, Al Kuphal, Summers and the Antioch connection of John Maki Jr. Craig Mertes and Jeremy Olson will all be looking at the top spot. Just entered after afew years off, top runner when he took some time off is, Byron Oaks now of Elkhorn.

Landry Potter of Delavan is the defending super late model 2000 champion. This division will have some stiff competition coming with the closing of Raceway Park in Blue Island, Illinois and the $700 to win the feature if the night is sponsored. Randy Rodgers also from Delavan will be back full time after only running a limited schedule here last season. Rodgers had fast time all but one night when he raced here.

Al Schill the multi time champion will be back all season. Schill only raced 60 % of last seasons shows and still finished nineth and had the highest per night average points. Kent Burkoth who finished runner up last

year,Jamie Wallace another former champion, Brad Durbin,2000 rookie of the year Shane Bishop,Denny Hiffman, Joe FisherBrian Ulrich and Jamie Artelt are all from last seasons top ten and will be back.

Time trials begin at 6 pm. racing at 7:30 sharp. The spectator gate opens at 5 pm.The raceway is still than

one hour fron Chicago,Milwaukee,Madison and Rockford. The phone number is 262-248-8566
