English Scores Clean Sweep!

By Dale Erdmann

October 6, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. What a difference a week makes. The 21st. annual “run what ya brung”
Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway brought out the die hard race fans as temperatures hovering in the upper 30’s with a full pit area the event was a huge success. 2001 super late model champion here Landry Potter of Genoa City scored a impressive win in the 35 lap feature race as he lapped the entire field before taking the win in what is be the super late model class. Potter drove a sprint car to take the win.

Jack Rubach of Burlington this seasons super stock champion ran away with the 30 lap feature race and Mark English of Edgerton scored a clean sweep in Pure stock 4 cylinders taking fast time his heat and the 25 lap feature.

2001 millennium late model champion Rick Corso darted out front of the field in the super late model class feature. Joe Fischer moved in front one lap later with Billy Skinner Jr. all over Corso. Right behind this cluster was Landry Potter biting at the bit.As the cars broke free on lap four Potter quickly moved into second with fast timer Matt Schultz next.

On lap eight Potter scooted past Fischer as Schultz looked like he was glued to the new leader. One lap later Skip Martin flew past three cars and inched up behind Schultz. What should have turned into an exciting contest turned sour on lap eleven as the top two tried to lap a very slow car. Schultz didn’t make it and received some bad front end damage as the first and only caution appeared. The unknown driver who was lapped was sent to the pits for not moving down on the leaders but Schultz evening was over.

The next three laps Martin hung with the leader but after that it was some low 15 second laps as Potter lapped everyone at least once before taking the win over Martin, Mark Brunne,r Skinner, Ulrich and Cowan.

The super stock class saw Trevor Mock jump in front of the field with AJ Dunn Craig Mertes and Mike Bell next. For the next five laps it was an excellent parade formation with Mock and Dunn and Mertes and Bell flying around the oval. The first change came on lap seven when Dunn moved to a foot lead. The party was spoiled on lap fifteen when Terry Hilgendorf in an IMCA modified made contact with Mertes and fast quailifier Rob Summers. Somehow Mertes went over the wheels of Summers and came to rest just before turn one bringing out the caution.

Being at the wrong place at the right time proved to be costly for Mertes and his night was over. Just one more lap was completed with Bell out front when Summers and number 80 tangled stopping the action one more time. Then three laps later John Maki Jr.and Hilgendorf got together halting the race again. Each time Bell did a great job securing the front spot. But on this restart Jack Rubach who was steadily moving forward was too much for him and the lead changed again.

A three car get together on lap twenty three and another on lap twenty eight kept the action close. The last was all starter Dave Rex Jr. could tolerate and the checkered came out as they lined up single file for the restart order. Rubach held back Jim Pankow, Brian Blake, number 80, and number 14 for his sixth feature win of the season for the second year driver who became the newest champion.

Dan Giannotti moved from the second row inside to take the lead of the 4 cylinder pure stocks before Bill Hobson drove into the lead. Jeff Baum was third with fast timer Mark English knocking on the door. This tight cluster worked up a sweat with their see saw battles as English crept into second on lap six.

It would take English ten laps of intense driving to finally gain the lead. Once in front Hobson could have settled for second but a lapped car put him on the infield.English went on to win the contest finishing just ahead of Vincent Merry the 2001 sport truck champion. Third was Dennis Clapp with a fast recovering Hobson, Tony Burrafato was fifth and Tom Ross sixth.
