Small
Car World Championships a Huge Success at LGR!
By Dale Erdmann |
September 28, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - The 4th. annual Small Car World Championships now part of the
ODouls October Classic was another huge success with nearly 150 race cars
Friday Night at Lake Geneva Raceway as drivers from 6 states were on hand to provide some
great racing.
Coming into nights racing Ken Johnson of Paddock Lake held a narrow 100 point advantage
over Joe Miller of Kenosha who ended winning the Herbs mini modified championship
non stop feature for 15 laps. Johnsons 3rd.in time and fifth in the main event was
enough to put the veteran driver over the top one more time in a close point battle that
went down to the last night.
The Great Lakes Allison legacy series
was here with 5 states represented in the feature race 17 year old Erik Darnell an up and
coming third generation driver from Beach Park, Illinois nearly scored a clean sweep with
his fast time second in his heat and feature win over Kelly Bires. The field was tight for
the distance with third place going to Kenosha driver Keith Tolf followed by Chris Bires
and Chad Davidson.
The mini modified championship started off with some four deep racing action first night
driver Tony Gamba had problems early and dropped out on lap three. Rich Musgrave led the
opening lap before Joe Miller darted in front. The race for any position wasnt over
until the checkered flag after fast timer Mike VanHouten chased Miller the whole first
half of the race. Roy Morrison took over second with just three laps to go. Miller claimed
the win with Morrison, Hermie Schultz, VanHouten and Ken Johnson rounding out the top
five.
The Formula Indy cars and the Michigan Racing group ran together as John Lynch led all
laps with fast qualifier Joe Miller second. Completing the top five were Steve Lemke,
Patrick Kevin and Joel Cross.
Ron Duffek grabbed the lead of the legends feature but with just two laps to go 2001
champion Al Smith inched ahead to win the close race by just inches over Clayton Kruse who
nipped Curt Gnatzig, Herman Greinig and Duffek who went wide coming off turn four.
The mini cups had a hotly contested feature as Tim Trussaint lead the first nine laps but
Brian Baldyga caught the leader and went on to win the feature over Ken Jones who had
quick time. Third place went to an unknown driver with Jon Touisaint and Jeff Meyers next.
In the GEM Pro Karts Jesse Fox was transported to the hospital after crashing hard into
the protective tire in turn two. Fox injured his elbow in the incident. No other results
were available at press time.
The 4 cylinder feature was exciting as Chad Ross led the opening six laps before BJ
Sparkman who started back in the field moved around him. Heat race winner Scott Hoeft
crept up on the leader with Mark English and now Ed Wolff III made it even closer as the
pressure was on the leader.
With just one lap to go Sparkman gave just enough room to Hoeft and English for some three
deep excitement as the crowd went wild and a race too close to call. The lap almost went
down to the wire when something happened as Hoeft got crossed up and couldnt correct
coming for the wire at full speed getting off the track running into the large protective
tire next to the line head on. This caused his race car to go head over heels across the
tire landing along side it. Hoeft was knocked out by the impact.
The EMTs brought him to and the first thing he said where did I finish?
Coming across the line in first was Wolff with English at his side and George Sparkman
right there in third. Jamie Everett was fourth and John Hoff Jr. fifth in the wildest race
of the evening. Hoeft was transported to the Auroa Medical Facility in Elkhorn and his
condition was not known at the time this was written.
Due to the late hour with all the problems throughout the evening the Rascal Outlaw powder
puff was cancelled due to the curfew which had passed us by. With that many cars
its going to happen what could we do? stated Kevin Dawson the raceway owner
and Promoter of the weekend program.
