Super
Late Model point leader Skinner strikes again at Lake Geneva Raceway!
By Dale Erdmann |
May 5, 2001; Lake Geneva, WI. - Despite some
cool southeast winds and the threat of rain another large crowd came out to Lake Geneva
Raceway Saturday night for the fourth night of racing. Over 100 race cars jammed the pit
area. Point leader Billy Skinner Jr. of nearby Pell Lake won his second straight 35 lap
super late model feature of the young season. Dan Tschida hometown driver from Lake Geneva
who is in the US Navy was the surprise winner of the 25 lap McHenry Limo super stock
feature race, after actually finishing second. The apparent winner was disqualified after
a post race inspection.
Bill Olson, point leader in the Sideine Motorsports Sport truck won his first 15 lap
feature. In a first time appearance Paul Zimmerman of Woodstock ,IL. won the BIC car 25
lap feature. This division start their weekly season on Friday night May 18th. Before the
race program the drivers and crowd stood for a minute of silence for StveDei of Salem who
raced here and at Wilmot in the popular number XXX race car. Dei who was 45 years of age
was killed an an automobile accident on Thursday afternoon May 3rd.
Pole sitters Fran Prestay and Larry Los battled for the lead as the first green
was thrown. The caution was out on lap four after a turn three incident. Los secured the
top spot on the next green. Semi winner Al Schill dropped out on lap six with problems. As
Los was in firm command of that top spot. Prestay now had problems with Bob Koidahl on lap
eight, with a tight field behind the top three. Visiting driver Matt Mylin a Re/Max
regular was already up to fourth. Jerry Mueller was next , with Rick Corso right there
too. On lap twelve Mueller got by Mylin, but Landry Potter was now putting the pressure on
them.
On lap twenty Los spun collecting Prestay going around in front of the fast moving field.
Joe Fischer, Billy Baumeister, Shane Bishop, Corso and Matt Kocourek became involved just
before the caution came out. Fischer and Bishop returned before the next green as Koidahl
charged out front. The caution came out before that lap was complete as Los spun again.
Koidahl moved in front one more time with Mylin and Mueller all over him. Mylin slipped in
front as Koidahl slowed staking up the field . Brian Ulrich smashed into Potter with most
of the field spinning to avoid. The caution brought the race to it's final halt.
When the green flag was ready to be shown only thirteen race cars were ready to race.
Mylin out dueled Mueller for the lead with Billy Skinner who started sixteenth in the
twenty car field up to third. Potter, Wayne Freimund and Jamie Wallace who had fast time
next. Starter Dave Rex Jr. warned Mylin to pick a lane as Mueller tried to get by. Skinner
looked for a mistake by the two up front, but no one did that.
On lap twenty seven Mylin received the black flag for using too much of the surface,as
Mueller took over the lead. One lap later Skinner moved along side the new leader. It was
side by side excitment as this twosome put on a real show. With the signal of five laps to
go, Skinner inched ahead . The only change came on with three laps to go, as Potter moved
past Mueller. The close contest ended with Skinner, Potter, Mueller under a blanket.
Freimund,Wallace, Denny Hiffman, a recovered Los and Fischer rounded out the top eight.
John Janssen crept in front of the other nineteen super stocks as Adam Regnier got turned,
causing a complete restart. Janssen grabbed the lead again with Andy Szymanskyj moving by
one lap later , Byron Oaks tried to drop Janssen one more spot on lap four but to no
avail, with Regnier, John Maki Jr. and Dan Tschida next. It was tight across the board,
with Maki moving up to third on lap five.
Three laps later Maki was knocking on second place Janssen's door and for the next ten
laps these two diced for second place. Regnier dropped out on lap fifteen, plagued with
three weeks of problems. One lap later Janssen had problems and Maki now had Tschida on
his right side. Oaks wasn't going to go away, with point leader Mike Kooi next. It was
close at the top as Szymanskyj drove a great race, but on lap twenty Maki made his move.
The crowd went wild as the top four diced back and forth for the lead. On lap twenty
three it looked like only Maki's position was slightly secure. But one lap later Tschida
pulled off the move of the race taking over the lead, as fast timer Jack Rubach moved into
contention. Szymanskyj was going to give up as it was a four deep fantansy that the crowd
loved. Coming into turn one with the white flag shown to the field Maki tried again to
regain the lead. Three deep racing ensued as this group entered turn three Tschida held
the lead by less than a foot.
Coming of the turn and down into four Maki went up the middle and never touched anyone,
scooting across the line first for the win to the delight of the crowd. Tschida was second
with Rubach, Szymanskyj and Kooi nextjust about to close to call in a scorers nightmare
finish. Pete Olson, Oaks and Doug Peterson were next in another extremely close feature.
But then came the post race inspection. Maki was dropped from the finish for too much
compression after that excellent run. Rob Summers was moved up to eighth.
Bill Vankirk held onto the lead of the sport truck feature just two laps before Chad Ross
was scored in front three more laps. Bill Olson took over that position on lap six and
never looked back for the win. C.Ross was next as Vankirk, Todd Ross, Vincent Merry and
Jamie Everett a former BIC driver sixth.
The weekly Saturday night race fans were treated to the BIC cars non stop feature for 25
laps as Paul Zimmerman took the lead on lap nine and winning by just afew feet at the line
over another nineteen drivers all but two running at the finish with only two others
lapped creating another close race.
This weekend marks the second Friday night of weekly motocross racing at 8 pm. on the
stadium dirt course. On Saturday night on the paved oval Performance Unlimited McHenry
Limousine and Reliable Carpentary presents the first roll over contest of the season. The
super late models and super stocks will be joined by the sportsman . Time trials begin at
